    RIDES: Robust Intrusion Detection System for IP-Based Ubiquitous Sensor Networks

    The IP-based Ubiquitous Sensor Network (IP-USN) is an effort to build the “Internet of things”. By utilizing IP for low power networks, we can benefit from existing well established tools and technologies of IP networks. Along with many other unresolved issues, securing IP-USN is of great concern for researchers so that future market satisfaction and demands can be met. Without proper security measures, both reactive and proactive, it is hard to envisage an IP-USN realm. In this paper we present a design of an IDS (Intrusion Detection System) called RIDES (Robust Intrusion DEtection System) for IP-USN. RIDES is a hybrid intrusion detection system, which incorporates both Signature and Anomaly based intrusion detection components. For signature based intrusion detection this paper only discusses the implementation of distributed pattern matching algorithm with the help of signature-code, a dynamically created attack-signature identifier. Other aspects, such as creation of rules are not discussed. On the other hand, for anomaly based detection we propose a scoring classifier based on the SPC (Statistical Process Control) technique called CUSUM charts.     Cyberthreats, Attacks and Intrusion Detection in Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Networks

    Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are computer-based process control systems that interconnect and monitor remote physical processes. There have been many real world documented incidents and cyber-attacks affecting SCADA systems, which clearly illustrate critical infrastructure vulnerabilities. These reported incidents demonstrate that cyber-attacks against SCADA systems might produce a variety of financial damage and harmful events to humans and their environment. This dissertation documents four contributions towards increased security for SCADA systems. First, a set of cyber-attacks was developed. Second, each attack was executed against two fully functional SCADA systems in a laboratory environment; a gas pipeline and a water storage tank. Third, signature based intrusion detection system rules were developed and tested which can be used to generate alerts when the aforementioned attacks are executed against a SCADA system. Fourth, a set of features was developed for a decision tree based anomaly based intrusion detection system. The features were tested using the datasets developed for this work. This dissertation documents cyber-attacks on both serial based and Ethernet based SCADA networks. Four categories of attacks against SCADA systems are discussed: reconnaissance, malicious response injection, malicious command injection and denial of service. In order to evaluate performance of data mining and machine learning algorithms for intrusion detection systems in SCADA systems, a network dataset to be used for benchmarking intrusion detection systemswas generated. This network dataset includes different classes of attacks that simulate different attack scenarios on process control systems. This dissertation describes four SCADA network intrusion detection datasets; a full and abbreviated dataset for both the gas pipeline and water storage tank systems. Each feature in the dataset is captured from network flow records. This dataset groups two different categories of features that can be used as input to an intrusion detection system. First, network traffic features describe the communication patterns in a SCADA system. This research developed both signature based IDS and anomaly based IDS for the gas pipeline and water storage tank serial based SCADA systems. The performance of both types of IDS were evaluates by measuring detection rate and the prevalence of false positives

    An analysis of security issues in building automation systems

    The purpose of Building Automation Systems (BAS) is to centralise the management of a wide range of building services, through the use of integrated protocol and communication media. Through the use of IP-based communication and encapsulated protocols, BAS are increasingly being connected to corporate networks and also being remotely accessed for management purposes, both for convenience and emergency purposes. These protocols, however, were not designed with security as a primary requirement, thus the majority of systems operate with sub-standard or non-existent security implementations, relying on security through obscurity. Research has been undertaken into addressing the shortfalls of security implementations in BAS, however defining the threats against BAS, and detection of these threats is an area that is particularly lacking. This paper presents an overview of the current security measures in BAS, outlining key issues, and methods that can be improved to protect cyber physical systems against the increasing threat of cyber terrorism and hacktivism. Future research aims to further evaluate and improve the detection systems used in BAS through first defining the threats and then applying and evaluating machine learning algorithms for traffic classification and IDS profiling capable of operating on resource constrained BAS

    This report discusses the research done on the chosen topic, which is Network Intrusion Detection System. This project shows that monitoring and detection of the network will reduce the down time of the network and reducing future attacks. In addition, acomprehensive and organised analysis is conducted to verify the causes of the attack. It has been found that most household internet user lacks the means to strengthen their internet connection or networking system. The problem of this project is an unauthorised access into a home networking system that may cause harm by stealing private and confidential information as firewall and anti-virus won’t be sufficient against a determine attacker. The scope for this project is to develop an intrusion detection system that will improve the security of home network as that is the potential user of this system. The objective of this project is to investigate the methods needed to detect any unauthorised access into a home networking system. The detection system will use an open source system that are readily available but will be tuned for the usage of home user and based on Windows operating system. The literature review component talks about all the research that has being done prior to the pre-development and post-development of the project. All about intrusion detection and prevention system and its research are further discussed in detail. In methodology section, it will discuss regarding the usage of Iteration Development Model as the methodology used in developing this project. In the results and discussions section, the preliminary findings consist of the findings from literature review research, own research and the use case diagrams of the system. Then, the prototype development process and results together with the testing results will be discussed in detail. All the justifications are made clearly. In the recommendations section, all the related recommendations and some improvements that can be done for the future of this project are listed and elaborated. The conclusion section concludes the overall project. The project phases are also being discussed in detail. The project will focus on developing a network intrusion detection system for Windows-based operating system

These defects are, later, discovered by intruders to be used to penetrate into computer systems. Current security technologies, such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, honeypots, network-based antivirus systems, are insufficient to protect systems against those, continuously increasing and rapid-spreading attacks. Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) is a new technology developed to block today.s application-specific, data-driven attacks that spread in the speed of communication. IPS is the evolved and integrated state of the existing technologies; it is not a new approach to network security. In this thesis, IPS products of various computer security appliance developer companies have been analyzed in details. At the end of these analyses, the requirements of network-based IPSs have been identified and an architecture that fits those requirements has been proposed.     Security and Privacy Issues in Wireless Mesh Networks: A Survey

    This book chapter identifies various security threats in wireless mesh network (WMN). Keeping in mind the critical requirement of security and user privacy in WMNs, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of various possible attacks on different layers of the communication protocol stack for WMNs and their corresponding defense mechanisms. First, it identifies the security vulnerabilities in the physical, link, network, transport, application layers. Furthermore, various possible attacks on the key management protocols, user authentication and access control protocols, and user privacy preservation protocols are presented. After enumerating various possible attacks, the chapter provides a detailed discussion on various existing security mechanisms and protocols to defend against and wherever possible prevent the possible attacks. Comparative analyses are also presented on the security schemes with regards to the cryptographic schemes used, key management strategies deployed, use of any trusted third party, computation and communication overhead involved etc. The chapter then presents a brief discussion on various trust management approaches for WMNs since trust and reputation-based schemes are increasingly becoming popular for enforcing security in wireless networks. The work will help the College’s administrators to become increasingly cautions of attacks and perform regular risk analyses. The research methodologies used in this work are descriptive and exploratory research. In addition, a questionnaire survey and interviews were used to collect data necessary for in-depth knowledge of the intrusions in the College. The choice of the research methods was found relevant for the current work. Furthermore, the researcher intended to gain an increased understanding of and provide a detailed picture of IDPS and the issues to consider when implementing the system. Network intrusion has been a security issue since the inception of the computer systems and the Internet. When breaking into a computer or network system, confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA) are the three most aspect of security that are targets for intruders.     Securing Infrastructure-as-a-Service Public Clouds Using Security Onion

    The shift to Cloud computing has brought with it its specific security challenges concerning the loss of control, trust and multi-tenancy especially in Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) Cloud model. This article focuses on the design and development of an intrusion detection system (IDS) that can handle security challenges in IaaS Cloud model using an open source IDS. We have implemented a proof-of-concept prototype on the most deployed hypervisor—VMware ESXi—and performed various real-world cyber-attacks, such as port scanning and denial of service (DoS) attacks to validate the practicality and effectiveness of our proposed IDS architecture. Based on our experimental results we found that our Security Onion-based IDS can provide the required protection in a reasonable and effective manner

    AI Solutions for MDS: Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Misuse Detection and Localisation in Telecommunication Environments

    This report considers the application of Articial Intelligence (AI) techniques to the problem of misuse detection and misuse localisation within telecommunications environments. A broad survey of techniques is provided, that covers inter alia rule based systems, model-based systems, case based reasoning, pattern matching, clustering and feature extraction, articial neural networks, genetic algorithms, arti cial immune systems, agent based systems, data mining and a variety of hybrid approaches. The report then considers the central issue of event correlation, that is at the heart of many misuse detection and localisation systems. The notion of being able to infer misuse by the correlation of individual temporally distributed events within a multiple data stream environment is explored, and a range of techniques, covering model based approaches, `programmed' AI and machine learning paradigms. It is found that, in general, correlation is best achieved via rule based approaches, but that these suffer from a number of drawbacks, such as the difculty of developing and maintaining an appropriate knowledge base, and the lack of ability to generalise from known misuses to new unseen misuses. Two distinct approaches are evident. One attempts to encode knowledge of known misuses, typically within rules, and use this to screen events. This approach cannot generally detect misuses for which it has not been programmed, i.e. it is prone to issuing false negatives. The other attempts to `learn' the features of event patterns that constitute normal behaviour, and, by observing patterns that do not match expected behaviour, detect when a misuse has occurred. This approach is prone to issuing false positives, i.e. inferring misuse from innocent patterns of behaviour that the system was not trained to recognise. Contemporary approaches are seen to favour hybridisation, often combining detection or localisation mechanisms for both abnormal and normal behaviour, the former to capture known cases of misuse, the latter to capture unknown cases. In some systems, these mechanisms even work together to update each other to increase detection rates and lower false positive rates. It is concluded that hybridisation offers the most promising future direction, but that a rule or state based component is likely to remain, being the most natural approach to the correlation of complex events. The challenge, then, is to mitigate the weaknesses of canonical programmed systems such that learning, generalisation and adaptation are more readily facilitated

    Signature-based intrusion detection using NFR filter coding

    During the last decade, significant research effort has been made to develop Intrusion Detection Systems that offer the capability to detect network intrusions in real time. These systems employ various techniques for detecting intrusions, including Misuse Detection and Anomaly Detection. Misuse detection depends on the ability to codify known attack signatures, while anomaly detection compares current system activity with models of normal usage patterns. However, approximations in defining normal behavior raises the false alarm rate for anomaly detection systems as compared to misuse detection systems, which are fairly accurate. This implies that misuse detection should form an essential component for successful intrusion detection. In this thesis, we present an analysis of the two most commonly occurring attack types in the Internet; the distributed denial of service attacks and the buffer overflow attacks and demonstrate new misuse detection techniques to detect these attacks. We use a distributed denial of service attack tool mstream and the buffer overflow attack against an SMTP implementation.We carry out detection of these attacks using a commercial intrusion detection system Network Flight Recorder (NFR) augmented with new attack signatures. Attack signatures are developed and coded into NFR as rule sets, called filters, which are written in NFR\u27s own language N-code. These filters can extract header information from various protocols as well as retrieve packet payload contents and then process this information using signature based analysis to determine intrusion scenarios. This is a step towards providing greater security systems connected to the Internet in an effort to allow internet users to conduct their businesses in an environment of enhanced confidence
