    Impact of mobility in ad hoc protocol design

    Protocols in ad hoc networks are not designed with mobility in mind. Recent research reveals that mobility impacts all the layers of the protocol stack. Specifically, more realistic mobility models that are extracted from real user traces for the vehicular and pedestrian scenarios show that wireless nodes tend to cluster around popular locations. The contributions of this paper are two-fold. First, it suggests cross layer design, as a promising approach, in designing ad hoc protocols with mobility in mind. Therefore, it provides a survey of the methodologies used in wireless cross layer studies. Second, it presents a framework for cross layer and flexible ad hoc protocol design, which integrates mobility into protocol design

    Improving routing in networks of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: Reactive-Greedy-Reactive

    Because of their specific characteristics, Unmanned Aeronautical Ad-hoc Networks (UAANETs) can be classified as a special kind of mobile ad hoc networks. Because of the high mobility of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, designing a good routing protocol for UAANETs is challenging. Here, we present a new protocol called Reactive-Greedy-Reactive (RGR) as a promising routing protocol in high mobility and density-variable scenarios. RGR combines features of reactive MANET routing protocols such as Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector with geographic routing protocols, exploiting the unique characteristics of UAANETs. In addition to combining reactive and geographic routing, the protocol has a number of features to further improve the overall performance. We present the rationale and design of the protocol, discuss the specific performance improvements in detail and provide extensive simulation results that demonstrate that RGR outperforms purely reactive or geographic routing protocols.     Physics-Based Swarm Intelligence for Disaster Relief Communications

    This study explores how a swarm of aerial mobile vehicles can provide network connectivity and meet the stringent requirements of public protection and disaster relief operations. In this context, we design a physics-based controlled mobility strategy, which we name the extended Virtual Force Protocol (VFPe), allowing self-propelled nodes, and in particular here unmanned aerial vehicles, to fly autonomously and cooperatively. In this way, ground devices scattered on the operation site may establish communications through the wireless multi-hop communication routes formed by the network of aerial nodes.     Hybrid routing and bridging strategies for large scale mobile ad hoc networks

    Multi-hop packet radio networks (or mobile ad-hoc networks) are an ideal technology to establish instant communication infrastructure for military and civilian applications in which both hosts and routers are mobile. In this dissertation, a position-based/link-state hybrid, proactive routing protocol (Position-guided Sliding-window Routing - PSR) that provides for a flat, mobile ad-hoc routing architecture is described, analyzed and evaluated. PSR is based on the superposition of link-state and position-based routing, and it employs a simplified way of localizing routing overhead, without having to resort to complex, multiple-tier routing organization schemes. A set of geographic routing zones is defined for each node, where the purpose of the ith routing zone is to restrict propagation of position updates, advertising position differentials equal to the radius of the (i-i )th routing zone. Thus, the proposed protocol controls position-update overhead generation and propagation by making the overhead generation rate and propagation distance directly proportional to the amount of change in a node\u27s geographic position. An analytical model and framework is provided, in order to study the various design issues and trade-offs of PSR routing mechanism, discuss their impact on the protocol\u27s operation and effectiveness, and identify optimal values for critical design parameters, under different mobility scenarios. In addition an in-depth performance evaluation, via modeling and simulation, was performed in order to demonstrate PSR\u27s operational effectiveness in terms of scalability, mobility support, and efficiency. Furthermore, power and energy metrics, such as path fading and battery capacity considerations, are integrated into the routing decision (cost function) in order to improve PSR\u27s power efficiency and network lifetime. It is demonstrated that the proposed routing protocol is ideal for deployment and implementation especially in large scale mobile ad hoc networks. Wireless local area networks (WLAN) are being deployed widely to support networking needs of both consumer and enterprise applications, and IEEE 802.11 specification is becoming the de facto standard for deploying WLAN. However IEEE 802.11 specifications allow only one hop communication between nodes. A layer-2 bridging solution is proposed in this dissertation, to increase the range of 802.11 base stations using ad hoc networking, and therefore solve the hotspot communication problem, where a large number of mobile users require Internet access through an access point. In the proposed framework nodes are divided into levels based on their distance (hops) from the access point. A layer-2 bridging tree is built based on the level concept, and a node in certain level only forwards packets to nodes in its neighboring level. The specific mechanisms for the forwarding tree establishment as well as for the data propagation are also introduced and discussed. An analytical model is also presented in order to analyze the saturation throughput of the proposed mechanism, while its applicability and effectiveness is evaluated via modeling and simulation. The corresponding numerical results demonstrate and confirm the significant area coverage extension that can be achieved by the solution, when compared with the conventional 802.1 lb scheme. Finally, for implementation purposes, a hierarchical network structure paradigm based on the combination of these two protocols and models is introduced

    Implementation of CAVENET and its usage for performance evaluation of AODV, OLSR and DYMO protocols in vehicular networks

    Vehicle Ad-hoc Network (VANET) is a kind of Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) that establishes wireless connection between cars. In VANETs and MANETs, the topology of the network changes very often, therefore implementation of efficient routing protocols is very important problem. In MANETs, the Random Waypoint (RW) model is used as a simulation model for generating node mobility pattern. On the other hand, in VANETs, the mobility patterns of nodes is restricted along the roads, and is affected by the movement of neighbour nodes. In this paper, we present a simulation system for VANET called CAVENET (Cellular Automaton based VEhicular NETwork). In CAVENET, the mobility patterns of nodes are generated by an 1-dimensional cellular automata. We improved CAVENET and implemented some routing protocols. We investigated the performance of the implemented routing protocols by CAVENET.     Optimised protocols for time-critical applications and internetworking in wehicular ad-hoc networks

    Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) that enable communication among vehicles and between vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and cellular base stations have recently attracted significant interest from the research community, due to the wide range of practical applications they can facilitate (e.g., road safety, traffic management and rescue missions). Despite this increased research activity, the high vehicle mobility in a VANET raises concerns regarding the robustness and adaptiveness of such networks to support time-critical applications and internetworking. In this thesis, as a first step toward the design of efficient MAC protocol to support time-critical applications and internetworking, we show that it is indeed possible to follow the dynamics of a network and consequently adapt the transmission probability of the Aloha protocol to reduce the interference and maximise the single-hop throughput between adjacent nodes. Extensive simulation validates the proposed analytical model, which thus can serve as a promising tool to improve VANETs performance. By exploiting the parallel between the CSMA/CA and Aloha performance models, the optimal transmission probability for the Aloha protocol as a function of estimated vehicular density is derived. This probability is then used to obtain the optimal maximum CW that can be integrated in an amended CSMA/CA protocol to maximise the single-hop throughput among adjacent vehicles. We show by means of simulation that the beneficial impact the proposed protocol is increased channel throughput and reduced transmission delay when compared with the standardised protocol CSMA/CA in IEEE 802.11p. These results reveal the applicability of the new, optimised protocol to safety applications and clustering techniques with stringent performance requirements. Lastly, we propose a Stable Clustering Algorithm for vehicular ad-hoc networks (SCalE) internetworking. The exchange of the necessary status information to support the efficient clusters formation can firmly relay on the support of our optimised CSMA/CA protocol. The SCalE algorithm makes use of the knowledge of the vehicles behaviour (explained in Chapter 5) for efficient selection of CHs, and selects a backup CH on top of the CH to maintain the stability of cluster structures. The increased stability and improved performance of the SCalE algorithm is studied and compared with existing clustering algorithms.Open Acces
