    Challenges Using the Linux Network Stack for Real-Time Communication

    Starting in the early 2000s, human-in-the-loop (HITL) simulation groups at NASA and the Air Force Research Lab began using the Linux network stack for some real-time communication. More recently, SpaceX has adopted Ethernet as the primary bus technology for its Falcon launch vehicles and Dragon capsules. As the Linux network stack makes its way from ground facilities to flight critical systems, it is necessary to recognize that the network stack is optimized for communication over the open Internet, which cannot provide latency guarantees. The Internet protocols and their implementation in the Linux network stack contain numerous design decisions that favor throughput over determinism and latency. These decisions often require workarounds in the application or customization of the stack to maintain a high probability of low latency on closed networks, especially if the network must be fault tolerant to single event upsets

    Information Centric Networking in the IoT: Experiments with NDN in the Wild

    This paper explores the feasibility, advantages, and challenges of an ICN-based approach in the Internet of Things. We report on the first NDN experiments in a life-size IoT deployment, spread over tens of rooms on several floors of a building. Based on the insights gained with these experiments, the paper analyses the shortcomings of CCN applied to IoT. Several interoperable CCN enhancements are then proposed and evaluated. We significantly decreased control traffic (i.e., interest messages) and leverage data path and caching to match IoT requirements in terms of energy and bandwidth constraints. Our optimizations increase content availability in case of IoT nodes with intermittent activity.     Measuring named data networks

    2020 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.Named Data Networking (NDN) is a promising information-centric networking (ICN) Internet architecture that addresses the content directly rather than addressing servers. NDN provides new features, such as content-centric security, stateful forwarding, and in-network caches, to better satisfy the needs of today's applications. After many years of technological research and experimentation, the community has started to explore the deployment path for NDN. One NDN deployment challenge is measurement. Unlike IP, which has a suite of measurement approaches and tools, NDN only has a few achievements. NDN routing and forwarding are based on name prefixes that do not refer to individual endpoints. While rich NDN functionalities facilitate data distribution, they also break the traditional end-to-end probing based measurement methods. In this dissertation, we present our work to investigate NDN measurements and fill some research gaps in the field. Our thesis of this dissertation states that we can capture a substantial amount of useful and actionable measurements of NDN networks from end hosts. We start by comparing IP and NDN to propose a conceptual framework for NDN measurements. We claim that NDN can be seen as a superset of IP. NDN supports similar functionalities provided by IP, but it has unique features to facilitate data retrieval. The framework helps identify that NDN lacks measurements in various aspects. This dissertation focuses on investigating the active measurements from end hosts. We present our studies in two directions to support the thesis statement. We first present the study to leverage the similarities to replicate IP approaches in NDN networks. We show the first work to measure the NDN-DPDK forwarder, a high-speed NDN forwarder designed and implemented by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in a real testbed. The results demonstrate that Data payload sizes dominate the forwarding performance, and efficiently using every fragment to improve the goodput. We then present the first work to replicate packet dispersion techniques in NDN networks. Based on the findings in the NDN-DPDK forwarder benchmark, we devise the techniques to measure interarrivals for Data packets. The results show that the techniques successfully estimate the capacity on end hosts when 1Gbps network cards are used. Our measurements also indicate the NDN-DPDK forwarder introduces variance in Data packet interarrivals. We identify the potential bottlenecks and the possible causes of the variance. We then address the NDN specific measurements, measuring the caching state in NDN networks from end hosts. We propose a novel method to extract fingerprints for various caching decision mechanisms. Our simulation results demonstrate that the method can detect caching decisions in a few rounds. We also show that the method is not sensitive to cross-traffic and can be deployed on real topologies for caching policy detection

    Off-line computing for experimental high-energy physics

    The needs of experimental high-energy physics for large-scale computing and data handling are explained in terms of the complexity of individual collisions and the need for high statistics to study quantum mechanical processes. The prevalence of university-dominated collaborations adds a requirement for high-performance wide-area networks. The data handling and computational needs of the different types of large experiment, now running or under construction, are evaluated. Software for experimental high-energy physics is reviewed briefly with particular attention to the success of packages written within the discipline. It is argued that workstations and graphics are important in ensuring that analysis codes are correct, and the worldwide networks which support the involvement of remote physicists are described. Computing and data handling are reviewed showing how workstations and RISC processors are rising in importance but have not supplanted traditional mainframe processing. Examples of computing systems constructed within high-energy physics are examined and evaluated

    Scalable Persistent Storage for Erlang

    The many core revolution makes scalability a key property. The RELEASE project aims to improve the scalability of Erlang on emergent commodity architectures with 100,000 cores. Such architectures require scalable and available persistent storage on up to 100 hosts. We enumerate the requirements for scalable and available persistent storage, and evaluate four popular Erlang DBMSs against these requirements. This analysis shows that Mnesia and CouchDB are not suitable persistent storage at our target scale, but Dynamo-like NoSQL DataBase Management Systems (DBMSs) such as Cassandra and Riak potentially are. We investigate the current scalability limits of the Riak 1.1.1 NoSQL DBMS in practice on a 100-node cluster. We establish for the first time scientifically the scalability limit of Riak as 60 nodes on the Kalkyl cluster, thereby confirming developer folklore. We show that resources like memory, disk, and network do not limit the scalability of Riak. By instrumenting Erlang/OTP and Riak libraries we identify a specific Riak functionality that limits scalability. We outline how later releases of Riak are refactored to eliminate the scalability bottlenecks. We conclude that Dynamo-style NoSQL DBMSs provide scalable and available persistent storage for Erlang in general, and for our RELEASE target architecture in particular

    User-space Multipath UDP in Mosh

    In many network topologies, hosts have multiple IP addresses, and may choose among multiple network paths by selecting the source and destination addresses of the packets that they send. This can happen with multihomed hosts (hosts connected to multiple networks), or in multihomed networks using source-specific routing. A number of efforts have been made to dynamically choose between multiple addresses in order to improve the reliability or the performance of network applications, at the network layer, as in Shim6, or at the transport layer, as in MPTCP. In this paper, we describe our experience of implementing dynamic address selection at the application layer within the Mobile Shell. While our work is specific to Mosh, we hope that it is generic enough to serve as a basis for designing UDP-based multipath applications or even more general APIs

    Network strategies for the new economy

    In this paper we argue that the pace and scale of development in the information and communication technology industries (ICT) has had and continues to have major effects on the industry economics and competitive dynamics generally. We maintain that the size of changes in demand and supply conditions is forcing companies to make significant changes in the way they conceive and implement their strategies. We decompose the ICT industries into four levels, technology standards, supply chains, physical platforms, and consumer networks. The nature of these technologies and their cost characteristics coupled with higher degrees of knowledge specialisation is impelling companies to radical revisions of their attitudes towards cooperation and co-evolution with suppliers and customers. Where interdependencies between customers are particularly strong, we anticipate the possibility of winner-takes-all strategies. In these circumstances industry risks become very high and there will be significant consequences for competitive markets
