[Excerpt]What percentage of people (aged 15 years and older) who live in the United States participated in sports and exercise activities on an average day in recent years? About 16 percent. In comparison, consider that the number of people who watched television on an average day is roughly five times larger. These charts, which display data from the American Time Use Survey, take a closer look at people who spend time in sports and exercise activities

GETTING OUT WHAT YOU PUT IN: An Evaluation of Public Investment in Irish Sport. RESEARCH SERIES NUMBER 4 OCTOBER 2008

    Get PDF
This paper presents an economic analysis of the returns to public investment in Irish sport, which has increased dramatically over the past decade. It combines figures on spending by central government and state agencies with a relatively new and rapidly expanded body of research on participation in sport. The aim is to use what has become a substantial evidence base to assess whether Irish sports policy is likely to meet its stated aims of improving health and quality of life. Empirical findings support the view that there are significant health and social benefits to be had from participation in sport. However, the analysis challenges the way current policy addresses three trade-offs in the allocation of resources: the balance between “elite” and “grassroots” sport; the trade-off between investment in sporting facilities (physical capital) and participation programmes (human and social capital); and the allocation of public money across the range of different sporting activities. In each case, given the stated aims of policy and the evidence base, it is difficult to justify the current position. The paper concludes that the allocation of public investment in sport needs to be updated in light of recent findings

The Building of Clemantine: Clemantine’s life through architecture

    Get PDF
Whilst looking through all the pictures I have taken while traveling over the years, took, I found a connection between the buildings I have photographed and the life of Clemantine Wamariya. Their designs, structures, and presence mirror aspects of her life that resonated within the photographs I have captured. Clemantine herself described architecture as a “world of symbolism” (p. 219). While most buildings and structures simply seem to exist without much care for appearance or surroundings, architecture and the act of constructing buildings is a form of art. When I look at buildings, especially museums, I try to see them as pieces of art that can symbolise conflict or harmonies. They can hold many different meanings which can be interpreted in many different ways that connect to many different stories or emotions, as well as the history surrounding it.. I will give my interpretation of the architecture in relation to the story of Clemantine Wamariya in The Girl Who Smiled Beads: A Story of War and What Comes After (2018)

Enhancing a Brand with the Introduction of Merchandise and a Social Media Content Schedule

    Get PDF
This project focuses on how to enhance a brand by incorporating merchandise for the brand and utilizing a social media content schedule to push out content consistently and uniformly. The primary beneficiary of this project is J.E.D.I. Brew Co, a small craft brewery out of Southern Illinois. The aim of the project is to study the important aspects of marketing and brand awareness, in order to help a brand better promote themselves. Ultimately, the project studies consumer engagement, advertising, experiential marketing, storytelling, and consumer behavior to help brands understand how these things affect and aid their business

    Laminating Lepidoptera for Educational Use

    Get PDF
Excerpt: A convenient method of teaching farmers, 4-H members and students to recognize various species of Lepidoptera is now being used in Michigan with wide success. In the process, insect wings are mounted on cardboard and sealed between layers of clear plastic. The resulting laminations have several advantages over pin-mounted Lepidoptera, and are admirably suited for any use that requires constant handling. The finished mounts are impervious to museum pests, are dust-proof, may be cleaned with ease, and are easily stored in a loose-leaf binder. The plastic is flexible, thus danger of damage from bending is slight

Evaluation of Superplastic Forming and Weld-brazing for Fabrication of Titanium Compression Panels

    Get PDF
The two titanium processing procedures, superplastic forming and weld brazing, are successfully combined to fabricate titanium skin stiffened structural panels. Stiffeners with complex shapes are superplastically formed using simple tooling. These stiffeners are formed to the desired configuration and required no additional sizing or shaping following removal from the mold. The weld brazing process by which the stiffeners are attached to the skins utilize spot welds to maintain alignment and no additional tooling is required for brazing. The superplastic formed/weld brazed panels having complex shaped stiffeners develop up to 60 percent higher buckling strengths than panels with conventional shaped stiffeners. The superplastic forming/weld brazing process is successfully scaled up to fabricate full size panels having multiple stiffeners. The superplastic forming/weld brazing process is also successfully refined to show its potential for fabricating multiple stiffener compression panels employing unique stiffener configurations for improved structural efficiency
