This Supplement issue, presents five research articles which are distributed, mainly due to the subject they address, from the 8th International Work-Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering (IWBBIO 2020), which was held on line, during September, 30th–2nd October, 2020. These contributions have been chosen because of their quality and the importance of their findings. Those contributions were then invited to participate in this supplement for the following journals of BMC: BMC Bioinformatics and BMC Genomics. In the present Editorial in BMC journal, we summarize the contributions that provide a clear overview of the thematic areas covered by the IWBBIO conference, ranging from theoretical/review aspects to real-world applications of bioinformatic and biomedical engineeringPID2021-128317OB-I00 (Ministry of Spain)P20-00163 (FEDER, Junta Andalucia

FLIR vs SEEK thermal cameras in biomedicine: comparative diagnosis through infrared thermography

Background: In biomedicine, infrared thermography is the most promising technique among other conventional methods for revealing the differences in skin temperature, resulting from the irregular temperature dispersion, which is the significant signaling of diseases and disorders in human body. Given the process of detecting emitted thermal radiation of human body temperature by infrared imaging, we, in this study, present the current utility of thermal camera models namely FLIR and SEEK in biomedical applications as an extension of our previous article. Results: The most significant result is the differences between image qualities of the thermograms captured by thermal camera models. In other words, the image quality of the thermal images in FLIR One is higher than SEEK Compact PRO. However, the thermal images of FLIR One are noisier than SEEK Compact PRO since the thermal resolution of FLIR One is 160 × 120 while it is 320 × 240 in SEEK Compact PRO. Conclusion: Detecting and revealing the inhomogeneous temperature distribution on the injured toe of the subject, we, in this paper, analyzed the imaging results of two different smartphone-based thermal camera models by making comparison among various thermograms. Utilizing the feasibility of the proposed method for faster and comparative diagnosis in biomedical problems is the main contribution of this study. The work and the contribution were supported by the SPEV project “Smart Solutions in Ubiquitous Computing Environments”, University of Hradec Kralove, Faculty of Informatics and Management, Czech Republic (under ID: UHK-FIM-SPEV-2019). Promoting the Public Health by Medical Image Analysis and Disease Diagnosis

Public health has improved as a result of data analysis tools since they make disease identification early and simple. In the absence of data analysis methods, medical professionals\u27 judgement is the only means of identifying the illness. This could be problematic in places without access to skilled medical professionals, which could ultimately result in the illness patient\u27s death. Data analysis techniques are currently being applied in numerous medical disease detection situations in order to address the aforementioned challenges. The methods for detecting blood disorders are presented in this article. This model detects blood disorder disease using a blood smear in addition to a clinical report. The sick patients are classified using an ML classifier after an ML model extracts information from blood smear images and combines them with clinical features

This article is the product of the research project entitled "Standard architecture design for the acquisition and transmission of data integrated in the automation of aquaponic crops", exposes the design and implementation of the automation of the reading, storage and transmission processes of data. Water quality parameters in a prototype aquaponic culture, made up of tilapia fish and short-cycle aromatic plants. The process of evolution of the variables ammonia, nitrate and pH is modeled through the Matlab Simulink tool and the historical values carried out in the field by IoT devices are recorded. It is possible to obtain the validation of the architecture of the required hardware and the dimensioning of the components of the solution in an integral way, projecting its applicability and sustainable contributions for the activity of aquaponic production in Colombia.

Multi-Head Graph Convolutional Network for Structural Connectome Classification

We tackle classification based on brain connectivity derived from diffusion magnetic resonance images. We propose a machine-learning model inspired by graph convolutional networks (GCNs), which takes a brain connectivity input graph and processes the data separately through a parallel GCN mechanism with multiple heads. The proposed network is a simple design that employs different heads involving graph convolutions focused on edges and nodes, capturing representations from the input data thoroughly. To test the ability of our model to extract complementary and representative features from brain connectivity data, we chose the task of sex classification. This quantifies the degree to which the connectome varies depending on the sex, which is important for improving our understanding of health and disease in both sexes. We show experiments on two publicly available datasets: PREVENT-AD (347 subjects) and OASIS3 (771 subjects). The proposed model demonstrates the highest performance compared to the existing machine-learning algorithms we tested, including classical methods and (graph and non-graph) deep learning. We provide a detailed analysis of each component of our model
