    Extended Kalman Filter Based States Estimation of Unmanned Quadrotors for Altitude-Attitude Tracking Control

    In this paper, state variables estimation and Fuzzy Sliding Mode Control (FSMC) are presented in order to estimate the state variables and altitude-attitude tracking control in presence of internal and external disturbances for unmanned quadrotor. The main idea of the proposed control strategy is the development of an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) for the observation of the states. Fuzzy logic systems are used to adapt the unknown switching-gains to eliminate the chattering phenomenon induced by Sliding Mode Control (SMC). The stability of the system is guaranteed in the sense of Lyapunov. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed controller-observer scheme that takes into account internal and external disturbances are demonstrated on computer simulation using Matlab environment

    On Observer-Based Control of Nonlinear Systems

    Filtering and reconstruction of signals play a fundamental role in modern signal processing, telecommunications, and control theory and are used in numerous applications. The feedback principle is an important concept in control theory. Many different control strategies are based on the assumption that all internal states of the control object are available for feedback. In most cases, however, only a few of the states or some functions of the states can be measured. This circumstance raises the need for techniques, which makes it possible not only to estimate states, but also to derive control laws that guarantee stability when using the estimated states instead of the true ones. For linear systems, the separation principle assures stability for the use of converging state estimates in a stabilizing state feedback control law. In general, however, the combination of separately designed state observers and state feedback controllers does not preserve performance, robustness, or even stability of each of the separate designs. In this thesis, the problems of observer design and observer-based control for nonlinear systems are addressed. The deterministic continuous-time systems have been in focus. Stability analysis related to the Positive Real Lemma with relevance for output feedback control is presented. Separation results for a class of nonholonomic nonlinear systems, where the combination of independently designed observers and state-feedback controllers assures stability in the output tracking problem are shown. In addition, a generalization to the observer-backstepping method where the controller is designed with respect to estimated states, taking into account the effects of the estimation errors, is presented. Velocity observers with application to ship dynamics and mechanical manipulators are also presented

    Trajectory Tracking and Payload Dropping of an Unmanned Quadrotor Helicopter Based on GS-PID and Backstepping Control

    Two useful control techniques, the Gain-Scheduled Proportional-Integral-Derivative (GS-PID) control and backstepping control, have been applied by using quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in the applications of trajectory tracking and payload dropping operations in this thesis. These control algorithms are analyzed and verified through software simulations and experimental tests. The dynamic model of the quadrotor UAV is firstly established using Newton-Euler laws. The quadrotor comes with a symmetric, nonlinear and multiple-input-multiple output (MIMO) dynamic model. The GS-PID control algorithm is implemented firstly in take-off, trajectory tracking, payload dropping, and landing periods of flight in trajectory tracking and payload dropping scenarios. Unlike other control algorithms that tend to linearize nonlinear systems, backstepping works without cancelling the nonlinearities in the system. This leads to more flexible designs of the control model. The backstepping control is implemented in this thesis for better performance of the quadrotor UAV for the two scenarios as well. Both control algorithms are implemented on the parameters of an unmanned quadrotor helicopter platform known as Qball-X4 available at the Networked Autonomous Vehicles Lab (NAVL) of Concordia University. Using MATLAB/Simulink to build the simulation control model, the flight simulation of the Qball-X4 is carried out for the trajectory tracking and the payload dropping. In order to further investigate these two control approaches, the Qball-X4 is used for experimental verification on payload dropping performance. The results indicate that both algorithms can obtain acceptable performance, but the backstepping controller proves to be a better performed one

    Optimized state feedback regulation of 3DOF helicopter system via extremum seeking

    In this paper, an optimized state feedback regulation of a 3 degree of freedom (DOF) helicopter is designed via extremum seeking (ES) technique. Multi-parameter ES is applied to optimize the tracking performance via tuning State Vector Feedback with Integration of the Control Error (SVFBICE). Discrete multivariable version of ES is developed to minimize a cost function that measures the performance of the controller. The cost function is a function of the error between the actual and desired axis positions. The controller parameters are updated online as the optimization takes place. This method significantly decreases the time in obtaining optimal controller parameters. Simulations were conducted for the online optimization under both fixed and varying operating conditions. The results demonstrate the usefulness of using ES for preserving the maximum attainable performance

    Improving Leader-Follower Formation Control Performance for Quadrotors

    This thesis aims to improve the leader-follower team formation flight performance of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) by applying nonlinear robust and optimal techniques, in particular the nonlinear H_infinity and the iterative Linear Quadratic Regulator (iLQR), to stabilisation, path tracking and leader-follower team formation control problems. Existing solutions for stabilisation, path tracking and leader-follower team formation control have addressed a linear or nonlinear control technique for a linearised system with limited disturbance consideration, or for a nonlinear system with an obstacle-free environment. To cover part of this area of research, in this thesis, some nonlinear terms were included in the quadrotors' dynamic model, and external disturbance and model parameter uncertainties were considered. Five different controllers were developed. The first and the second controllers, the nonlinear suboptimal H_infinity control technique and the Integral Backstepping (IBS) controller, were based on Lyapunov theory. The H_infinity controller was developed with consideration of external disturbance and model parameter uncertainties. These two controllers were compared for path tracking and leader-follower team formation control. The third controller was the Proportional Derivative square (PD2), which was applied for attitude control and compared with the H_infinity controller. The fourth and the fifth controllers were the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) control technique and the optimal iLQR, which was developed based on the LQR control technique. These were applied for attitude, path tracking and team formation control and there results were compared. Two features regarding the choice of the control technique were addressed: stability and robustness on the one hand, which were guaranteed using the H_infinity control technique as the disturbance is inherent in its mathematical model, and the improvement in the performance optimisation on the other, which was achieved using the iLQR technique as it is based on the optimal LQR control technique. Moreover, one loop control scheme was used to control each vehicle when these controllers were implemented and a distributed control scheme was proposed for the leader-follower team formation problem. Each of the above mentioned controllers was tested and verified in simulation for different predefined paths. Then only the nonlinear H_infinity controller was tested in both simulation and real vehicles experiments

    Development of Robust Control Strategies for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

    The resources of the energy and chemical balance in the ocean sustain mankind in many ways. Therefore, ocean exploration is an essential task that is accomplished by deploying Underwater Vehicles. An Underwater Vehicle with autonomy feature for its navigation and control is called Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). Among the task handled by an AUV, accurately positioning itself at a desired position with respect to the reference objects is called set-point control. Similarly, tracking of the reference trajectory is also another important task. Battery recharging of AUV, positioning with respect to underwater structure, cable, seabed, tracking of reference trajectory with desired accuracy and speed to avoid collision with the guiding vehicle in the last phase of docking are some significant applications where an AUV needs to perform the above tasks. Parametric uncertainties in AUV dynamics and actuator torque limitation necessitate to design robust control algorithms to achieve motion control objectives in the face of uncertainties. Sliding Mode Controller (SMC), H / μ synthesis, model based PID group controllers are some of the robust controllers which have been applied to AUV. But SMC suffers from less efficient tuning of its switching gains due to model parameters and noisy estimated acceleration states appearing in its control law. In addition, demand of high control effort due to high frequency chattering is another drawback of SMC. Furthermore, real-time implementation of H / μ synthesis controller based on its stability study is restricted due to use of linearly approximated dynamic model of an AUV, which hinders achieving robustness. Moreover, model based PID group controllers suffer from implementation complexities and exhibit poor transient and steady-state performances under parametric uncertainties. On the other hand model free Linear PID (LPID) has inherent problem of narrow convergence region, i.e.it can not ensure convergence of large initial error to zero. Additionally, it suffers from integrator-wind-up and subsequent saturation of actuator during the occurrence of large initial error. But LPID controller has inherent capability to cope up with the uncertainties. In view of addressing the above said problem, this work proposes wind-up free Nonlinear PID with Bounded Integral (BI) and Bounded Derivative (BD) for set-point control and combination of continuous SMC with Nonlinear PID with BI and BD namely SM-N-PID with BI and BD for trajectory tracking. Nonlinear functions are used for all P,I and D controllers (for both of set-point and tracking control) in addition to use of nonlinear tan hyperbolic function in SMC(for tracking only) such that torque demand from the controller can be kept within a limit. A direct Lyapunov analysis is pursued to prove stable motion of AUV. The efficacies of the proposed controllers are compared with other two controllers namely PD and N-PID without BI and BD for set-point control and PD plus Feedforward Compensation (FC) and SM-NPID without BI and BD for tracking control. Multiple AUVs cooperatively performing a mission offers several advantages over a single AUV in a non-cooperative manner; such as reliability and increased work efficiency, etc. Bandwidth limitation in acoustic medium possess challenges in designing cooperative motion control algorithm for multiple AUVs owing to the necessity of communication of sensors and actuator signals among AUVs. In literature, undirected graph based approach is used for control design under communication constraints and thus it is not suitable for large number of AUVs participating in a cooperative motion plan. Formation control is a popular cooperative motion control paradigm. This thesis models the formation as a minimally persistent directed graph and proposes control schemes for maintaining the distance constraints during the course of motion of entire formation. For formation control each AUV uses Sliding Mode Nonlinear PID controller with Bounded Integrator and Bounded Derivative. Direct Lyapunov stability analysis in the framework of input-to-state stability ensures the stable motion of formation while maintaining the desired distance constraints among the AUVs
