    Työssä selvitettiin, miten Satakunnan ammattikorkeakoulun NGN-laboratorion verkosta voidaan tarjota palveluliitäntöjä kolmansille osapuolille. Mahdollisia palveluita olisivat esim. NGN-laboratorion älyverkkoliitäntä IN– ja CAMEL-pyynnöille, GSM-viestikeskusliitäntä, kansainvälinen verkkovierailu tai etäälle sijoitettava tukiasema. Työssä oleellinen osa oli tunnistaa palvelut, sekä selvittää tapa jolla toteuttaa niiden vaatimat yhteydet, perustuen standardiratkaisuihin, kuten SIGTRAN tai CESoPSN.This thesis investigated how to provide service connections to third parties from the NGN laboratory. Potential services could be for example the Intelligent Network access for IN and CAMEL requests, access to SMSC, international GSM roaming or a remote base station. It was essential to recognise these services and find out how those connections are realised based on standard solutions like SIGTRAN or CESoPSN

    A complete coherent multichannel system, designed for application in the local loop, is presented. The concept of a uni- and bidirectional system and its technical realization in a laboratory demonstrator are described. The network control, including frequency management of the bidirectional channels, and network security are discussed. Attention is paid to the scenario for evolution from a narrowband to a complete broadband system. All aspects are integrated in a demonstrator, which is capable of supporting a large number of narrowband and broadband distributive and communicative services. Novel technical solutions for frequency management, data induced polarization switching (DIPS), high-speed encryption, and network signaling are presented

    Future benefits and applications of intelligent on-board processing to VSAT services

    The trends and roles of VSAT services in the year 2010 time frame are examined based on an overall network and service model for that period. An estimate of the VSAT traffic is then made and the service and general network requirements are identified. In order to accommodate these traffic needs, four satellite VSAT architectures based on the use of fixed or scanning multibeam antennas in conjunction with IF switching or onboard regeneration and baseband processing are suggested. The performance of each of these architectures is assessed and the key enabling technologies are identified

    Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (R-ISDN) provides a range of narrowband and broad-band services for voice, video, and multimedia. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) has been selected by the standards bodies as the transfer mode for implementing B-ISDN; The ability to digitize images has lead to the prospect of reducing the physical space requirements, material costs, and manual labor of traditional film handling tasks in hospitals. The system which handles the acquisition, storage, and transmission of medical images is called a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). The transmission system will directly impact the speed of image transfer. Today the most common transmission means used by acquisition and display station products is Ethernet. However, when considering network media, it is important to consider what the long term needs will be. Although ATM is a new standard, it is showing signs of becoming the next logical step to meet the needs of high speed networks; This thesis is a survey on ATM, and PACS. All the concepts involved in developing a PACS are presented in an orderly manner. It presents the recent developments in ATM, its applicability to PACS and the issues to be resolved for realising an ATM-based complete PACS. This work will be useful in providing the latest information, for any future research on ATM-based networks, and PACS

    Flow and congestion control in frame relay networks

    This thesis describes the algorithms developed to improve the overload performance of frame relay networks. These algorithms were developed by incorporating a number of congestion control techniques in the existing LAPD protocol (as defined in recommendation CCITT Q.920-Q.921). In addition, the performance analysis of the model is given. Simulation models were developed to evaluate the performance of these networks. A network simulation tool, OPNET, was used for this purpose. The performance of the enhanced model was compared with the existing protocol. A significant improvement was observed in the throughput and delay performance of frame relay networks. The results were obtained by executing extensive simulations and collecting data over a number of simulation runs. The effectiveness of the congestion control techniques was tested by analysing the dynamic performance of the model. These techniques, if implemented in the existing protocol, will ensure the good userperceived network performance at all loads
