    IP Delivery for FPGAs Using Applets and JHDL

    This paper introduces an FPGA IP evaluation and delivery system that operates within Java applets. The use of such applets allows designers to create, evaluate, test, and obtain FPGA circuits directly within a web browser. Based on the JHDL design tool, these applets allow structural viewing, circuit simulation, and netlist generation of applicationspecific circuits. Applets can be customized to provide varying levels of IP visibility and functionality as needed by both customer and vendor

    Improving Hardware Reuse through XML-based Interface Encapsulation

    This work proposes an encapsulation scheme aimed at simplifying the reuse process of hardware cores. This hardware encapsulation approach has been conceived with a twofold objective. First, we look for the improvement of the reuse interface associated with the hardware core description. This is carried out in a first encapsulation level by improving the limited types and configuration options available in the conventional HDLs interface, and also providing information related to the implementation itself. Second, we have devised a more generic interface focused on describing the function avoiding details from a particular implementation, what corresponds to a second encapsulation level. This encapsulation allows the designer to define how to configure and use the design to implement a given functionality. The proposed encapsulation schemes help improving the amount of information that can be supplied with the design, and also allow to automate the process of searching, configuring and implementing diverse alternatives

    With today\u27s system-on-chip (SOC) technology, we are able to design larger and more complicated application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and field programmable gate array (FPGA) in shorter time period. The key point of the success of SOC technology is the reuse of intellectual property (IP) cores. Consequently the copyright protection for these IP cores becomes the major concern for the development pace of SOC technology. Watermarking technology has been proved to be an effective way of copyright protection. In this thesis, the author presents two new watermarking algorithms respectively at algorithm level and FPGA layout level. The simulations and implementation results show that the new proposals have much less design and hardware implementation overheads, lower watermark embedding and extraction cost, as well as higher security strength, compared to the previously proposed methods.Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering.     Pervasive handheld computing systems

    The technological role of handheld devices is fundamentally changing. Portable computers were traditionally application specific. They were designed and optimised to deliver a specific task. However, it is now commonly acknowledged that future handheld devices need to be multi-functional and need to be capable of executing a range of high-performance applications. This thesis has coined the term pervasive handheld computing systems to refer to this type of mobile device. Portable computers are faced with a number of constraints in trying to meet these objectives. They are physically constrained by their size, their computational power, their memory resources, their power usage, and their networking ability. These constraints challenge pervasive handheld computing systems in achieving their multi-functional and high-performance requirements. This thesis proposes a two-pronged methodology to enable pervasive handheld computing systems meet their future objectives. The methodology is a fusion of two independent and yet complementary concepts. The first step utilises reconfigurable technology to enhance the physical hardware resources within the environment of a handheld device. This approach recognises that reconfigurable computing has the potential to dynamically increase the system functionality and versatility of a handheld device without major loss in performance. The second step of the methodology incorporates agent-based middleware protocols to support handheld devices to effectively manage and utilise these reconfigurable hardware resources within their environment. The thesis asserts the combined characteristics of reconfigurable computing and agent technology can meet the objectives of pervasive handheld computing systems
