Context transport based on 802.21 MIH protocol
Sensor networks, along with the sensorial output from their nodes, provide an information source to enhance and enrich upper layers mechanisms. The 802.21 MIH protocol provides a cross layer framework that can be extended for sensor information transport. At the same time, it creates an abstraction layer that removes hardware and software specificity from sensor nodes. On a higher level of the network stack, the XMPP protocol also provides an upper layer solution for content syndication on a platform with global access availability. We present a framework which integrates a cross-layer abstraction approach towards sensor devices of different families, while enabling the integration of media-independent sensor information into context consumers with the aim of optimizing network management, as well as application operation and usability. The work presented was also part of the first author’s MsC dissertation
The usage of peer-to-peer (P2P) networks that provide sharing of real-time environmental data by internet users is becoming more and more popular. As a result, it is necessary to identify the problems during P2P communication and to develop proper solutions. One of the major problems of P2P communication is that it is not possible to reach the clients behind devices that create private networks like network address translation (NAT) and firewalls from the public network. Among the solutions proposed for this problem, Interactivity Connectivity Establishment (ICE) and Real Time Media Flow Protocol (RTMFP) are the methods most preferred in the literature. These methods seem more attractive than other NAT traversal mechanisms since they are independent from internet infrastructure and are also appropriate for dynamic structures. However, they do have some disadvantages. With this thesis work, a new state-based end-to-end communication technique (SBN) for NAT traversal has been designed and realized. The performance of the designed method was evaluated against three criteria connectivity check delay, connection packet count and bandwidth and compared to the ICE method
The evolution of technologies and infrastructures in the field of computer networks has brought new challenges to the organizations. Centralized systems are being replaced by distributed ones, built on top of multiple connected computers. On the other hand, from an organizational point of view, there is a greater need to access consolidated and aggregated information produced by different sources. In the case of academic institutions, where multiple power centers exist, this is a bigger issue. Thus, due to technological and organizational issues, information integration is one of the most important current challenges. In this dissertation, a study and evaluation of the major alternatives for the interoperability between university information systems is conducted.First, the concept of University Information System is presented. A brief characterization of these systems is made based on the analyses of the most common features. Then, the concept of interoperability is detailed, with a focus on the technological aspects. The major technologies and solutions related to distributed systems are reviewed here.Following this, the problem of interoperability between university information systems is presented having as an example the concrete case of the Porto University. An evaluation of the more common interaction patterns is made and the problem is structured in two axis: horizontal and vertical. Based on the description and characterization of these axis, four patterns are identified: share, aggregation, concentration and diffusion of information. Each of these patterns results in a study case, which is described and systematized with the compilation of detailed requirements.Four distinct architectures are proposed for each of the generic patterns. After being described and justified the options, a brief contextualization is made for each particular case. This work resulted in the specification of concrete solutions for the representation of data and the implementation of interaction mechanisms. In the end, several prototypes were implemented that allowed to validate the proposed solutions
dado adquirido, o próximo passo será adaptar a conectividade e a forma
A norma 802.21 é o ponto comum
In a world where connectivity and information are constants in our everyday,
the question about what is going to be the next step becames more and
more relevant. Until now the challenge was focused on the mechanisms and
procedures that would provide the users with the means to obtain an uninterrupted
connectivy and experience at the same time that a huge panoply
of information services capable to accommodate user needs was made available.
Now that those two features are reality, the next step starts to unfold
revealing itself as the means to adapt the connectivity and information to
the users needs and preferences in a transparent way.
The evaluation of the users’ options, needs, preferences and choices as well
as the environment that surrounds them allows the logic characterization of
its context. Through context analysis of a user it becames possible to infer
about some of his habits, predict usability changes and to take automatic
decisions about some matters, like connectivity, applications’s usability
change according to the its surroundings, personalizing and adapting the
application’s behavior to the users conditions. Sensor networks are valuable
information sources as they provide additional information that usually
mobile devices do not have. For this reason, sensor networks are considered
one of the best information sources from the context analysis point of view.
In a heterogeneous network we can find different technologies of networking
(i.e. WiFi, WiMAX, 3G, etc.) and one of the recurrent problems is
to find a common feature that allows a continuous experience to the user.
The 802.21 protocol is that common feature and though its main purpose
is to address handover procedures, it operates in the second layer of communications
and access information that belongs to the third one without
actually making a connection to the third layer. In this dissertation we will
demonstrate how to take advantage of this 2,5 layer to access and provide
context information. The context transport based on 802.21 proposes itself
to approach this next step through a proof of concept that encompasses a
cooperation between the 802.21 protocol, context management platforms
(information services) and sensor networks with the main goal of facilitating
the personalization of applications and devices in a automatic and transparent
way to the user
