Tietoverkkojen valvonnan yhdenmukaistaminen
As the modern society is increasingly dependant on computer networks especially as the Internet of Things gaining popularity, a need to monitor computer networks along with associated devices increases. Additionally, the amount of cyber attacks is increasing and certain malware such as Mirai target especially network devices. In order to effectively monitor computer networks and devices, effective solutions are required for collecting and storing the information.
This thesis designs and implements a novel network monitoring system. The presented system is capable of utilizing state-of-the-art network monitoring protocols and harmonizing the collected information using a common data model. This design allows effective queries and further processing on the collected information.
The presented system is evaluated by comparing the system against the requirements imposed on the system, by assessing the amount of harmonized information using several protocols and by assessing the suitability of the chosen data model. Additionally, the protocol overheads of the used network monitoring protocols are evaluated.
The presented system was found to fulfil the imposed requirements. Approximately 21% of the information provided by the chosen network monitoring protocols could be harmonized into the chosen data model format. The result is sufficient for effective querying and combining the information, as well as for processing the information further. The result can be improved by extending the data model and improving the information processing. Additionally, the chosen data model was shown to be suitable for the use case presented in this thesis.
Eri verkonvalvontaprotokollien tarjoamasta informaatiosta keskimäärin 21% voitiin harmonisoida tietomalliin. Saavutettu osuus on riittävä, jotta eri laitteista saatavaa informaatiota voidaan yhdistellä ja hakea tehokkaasti.
Web Application Programming Interfaces (APIs): general-purpose standards, terms and European Commission initiatives
From their inception, digital technologies have had a huge impact on our everyday life. In both the private and the public sectors, they have contributed to, or at times driven, change in organisational structures, ways of working, and how products and services are shaped and shared. Governments and public administration units, driven by the digital evolution of information and communications technology (ICT), are evolving from traditional workflow-based public service provisions to digital equivalents (e-government), with more innovative forms of government and administration looking for the engagement of citizens and the private sector to co-create final services through user-centric approaches. Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), which are one of the most relevant ICT solutions, have contributed to this notable shift in the adoption of technology, especially when used over the web. They have affected the global economy of the private sector and are contributing to the digital transformation of governments.
To explore this in more detail, the European Commission recently started the APIs4DGov study. One of the outputs of the study is an analysis of the API technological landscape, including its related standards and technical specifications for general purpose use. The goal of the analysis presented in this brief report is to support the definition of stable APIs for digital government services adopted by governments or single public administration units. Such adoption would avoid the need to develop ad hoc solutions that could have limited scalability or potential for reuse. Instead, the work suggests that we should consider a number of existing standards provided by standardisation bodies or, at least, technical specifications written by well-recognised consortia, vendors or users.
The aim of this report is also to support API stakeholders in the identification and selection of such solutions. To do this, it first gives a series of definitions to help the reader understand some basic concepts, as well as related standards and technical specifications. Then, it presents the description and classification (by resource representation, security, usability, test, performance and licence) of the standards and technical specifications collected. A shortlist of these documents (based on their utilisation, maintenance and stability) is also proposed, together with a brief description of each of them. Finally, the report provides a useful glossary with definitions of the relevant terms we have collected so far within the APIs4DGov study.JRC.B.6-Digital Econom
Free/Open Source Software - Open Standards
Co-published with Elsevier a division of Reed Elsevier India Private LimitedThis primer is part of a series of primers on Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) from IOSN serving as
introductory documents to FOSS in general, as well as covering particular topic areas that are deemed
important to FOSS such as open standards. Open standards are not the same as FOSS. However, like
FOSS, they can minimize the possibility of technology and vendor lock-ins and level the playing field.
They can also play an important role in promoting the interoperability of FOSS and proprietary software
and this is crucial in the current, mixed Information technology (IT) environment. Being a primer in the
IOSN FOSS series, the issues concerning open standards are approached from the FOSS and software
perspectives and emphasis is given to the relationship that some of these standards have with FOSS.
The definition of an open standard has generated much controversy with regard to whether it should
contain patents licensed under reasonable and non-discriminatory (RAND) terms. The FOSS community,
in general, is of the view that such RAND-encumbered standards should not be considered as open
standards but most of the standards development organizations and bodies do accept patents available
under RAND terms in their standards. The primer has incorporated definitions of open standards from
both sides and also put into perspective the minimal characteristics that an open standard should have.
It is hoped that this primer will provide the reader with a better understanding as to why open standards
are important and how they can complement FOSS in fostering a more open IT environment. As users
and consumers, the readers of this primer should demand from their software, conformance to open
standards as far as possible. In addition to promoting interoperability and making more choices available,
this will make it easier for FOSS to co-exist and take root in environments filled with proprietary software
Internet of Things From Hype to Reality
The Internet of Things (IoT) has gained significant mindshare, let alone attention, in academia and the industry especially over the past few years. The reasons behind this interest are the potential capabilities that IoT promises to offer. On the personal level, it paints a picture of a future world where all the things in our ambient environment are connected to the Internet and seamlessly communicate with each other to operate intelligently. The ultimate goal is to enable objects around us to efficiently sense our surroundings, inexpensively communicate, and ultimately create a better environment for us: one where everyday objects act based on what we need and like without explicit instructions
Evaluating the effectiveness of packet filter firewall applications in a “dual stack” internet protocol environment
Technology providers have been implementing IPv6 capabilities including networking services and security tools for the past several years in anticipation for the transition from IPv4 to IPv6. This thesis will describe the technical background and an experiment to test the capability of two different host based applications for effective packet filtering in a dual IPv4, IPv6 stack environment
