    Gender influences in Digital Humanities co-authorship networks

    PURPOSE: This paper presents a co-authorship study of authors who published in Digital Humanities journals and examines the apparent influence of gender, or more specifically, the quantitatively detectable influence of gender in the networks they form. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This study applied co-authorship network analysis. Data has been collected from three canonical Digital Humanities journals over 52 years (1966–2017) and analysed. FINDINGS: The results are presented as visualised networks and suggest that female scholars in Digital Humanities play more central roles and act as the main bridges of collaborative networks even though overall female authors are fewer in number than male authors in the network. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: This is the first co-authorship network study in Digital Humanities to examine the role that gender appears to play in these co-authorship networks using statistical analysis and visualisation

    Agronomy research co-authorship networks in agricultural innovation systems

    Increasingly, Agricultural Innovation Systems, AIS, have been recognized as fundamentals pathways for agricultural science impact. This new thinking focuses on innovation, not as the end of pipe outcome of knowledge transfer, but as a continuous process of social, technical and scientific collaboration at regional and higherlevel systems that impacts on productivity and innovation performance. This paper surveys the agricultural innovation system in Colombia. We analyze collaboration between authors, institutions and countries from the perspective of social network analysis to introduce a descriptive review of the scientific collaboration in terms of links (discipline structure) and nodes (actors). A mixed methodology is implemented based on co-authorship bibliometric mapping using VOS VIEWER and social network analysis based on the software UCINET. Whereas exogenous authors and institutions are the most connected in terms of interaction, they have lower influence than endogenous authors.Cada vez más, los Sistemas de Innovación Agrícola, SIA, han sido reconocidos como vías fundamentales para el impacto de la ciencia agrícola. Este nuevo pensamiento se centra en la innovación, no como el resultado final de la transferencia de conocimientos, sino como un proceso continuo de colaboración social, técnica y científica en los sistemas regionales y de nivel superior que repercute en la productividad y el rendimiento de la innovación. En el presente documento se examinan los documentos de agronomía de Colombia como una rama de todo el sistema de innovación agrícola. Analizaremos la colaboración entre autores, instituciones y países desde la perspectiva del análisis de las redes sociales para introducir las principales características de los vínculos (estructura de la disciplina) y los nodos (actores). Se implementa una metodología mixta basada en la visualización de redes de co-autoría con Vos viewer y el análisis de redes sociales basado en el software UCINET.     Collaboration networks in economic science

    When preparing a research article, Economists receive feedback from other academics, present on conference and give talks in seminars. This form of collaboration is termed informal because informal collaborators have, unlike authors, no formal property rights associated with their contribution. However, informal collaboration is so widespread that it appears to be part of the academic production function. Yet, it has received little attention in academia, least in Economics where patterns of informal collaboration differ from that of natural sciences. Social informal collaboration, the provision of direct feedback, gives rise to a social network. This thesis examines this network. The analysis focuses on the role of individual scientists in the network, which is estimated by different network centralities. Data originate from about 6000 published research articles from six Financial Economics journals between 1997 and 2011. A theoretical model describes how network centrality proxies the effort informal collaborators exert informally in a project, and how this improves the citation count of the research paper. We then investigate how observable characteristics of authors determine this and other centrality measures and find that common metrics such as productivity and number of citations correlate little with network centrality. As information transmission is an important aspect of social networks we study how network centrality of Economists relates to placement outcomes of their students in the academic job market. These findings suggest that even informal networks matter in the production of academic research; that these networks contain information above currently used measures of scholarly influence in the profession; and that these networks are used to decrease information asymmetry in the academic labor market

    This is the book of proceedings of the 21st Science and Technology Indicators Conference that took place in València (Spain) from 14th to 16th of September 2016. The conference theme for this year, ‘Peripheries, frontiers and beyond’ aimed to study the development and use of Science, Technology and Innovation indicators in spaces that have not been the focus of current indicator development, for example, in the Global South, or the Social Sciences and Humanities. The exploration to the margins and beyond proposed by the theme has brought to the STI Conference an interesting array of new contributors from a variety of fields and geographies. This year’s conference had a record 382 registered participants from 40 different countries, including 23 European, 9 American, 4 Asia-Pacific, 4 Africa and Near East. About 26% of participants came from outside of Europe. There were also many participants (17%) from organisations outside academia including governments (8%), businesses (5%), foundations (2%) and international organisations (2%). This is particularly important in a field that is practice-oriented. The chapters of the proceedings attest to the breadth of issues discussed. Infrastructure, benchmarking and use of innovation indicators, societal impact and mission oriented-research, mobility and careers, social sciences and the humanities, participation and culture, gender, and altmetrics, among others. We hope that the diversity of this Conference has fostered productive dialogues and synergistic ideas and made a contribution, small as it may be, to the development and use of indicators that, being more inclusive, will foster a more inclusive and fair world

    The role of citation networks to explain academic promotions: an empirical analysis of the Italian national scientific qualification

    The aim of this paper is to study the role of citation network measures in the assessment of scientific maturity. Referring to the case of the Italian national scientific qualification (ASN), we investigate if there is a relationship between citation network indices and the results of the researchers’ evaluation procedures. In particular, we want to understand if network measures can enhance the prediction accuracy of the results of the evaluation procedures beyond basic performance indices. Moreover, we want to highlight which citation network indices prove to be more relevant in explaining the ASN results, and if quantitative indices used in the citation-based disciplines assessment can replace the citation network measures in non-citation-based disciplines. Data concerning Statistics and Computer Science disciplines are collected from different sources (ASN, Italian Ministry of University and Research, and Scopus) and processed in order to calculate the citation-based measures used in this study. Then, we apply logistic regression models to estimate the effects of network variables. We find that network measures are strongly related to the results of the ASN and significantly improve the explanatory power of the models, especially for the research fields of Statistics. Additionally, citation networks in the specific sub-disciplines are far more relevant than those in the general disciplines. Finally, results show that the citation network measures are not a substitute of the citation-based bibliometric indices
