    Growing philanthropy through collaboration: The landscape of giving circles in the United Kingdom and Ireland

    Recent efforts to grow philanthropy in the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland have focused on increasing the number of donors and size of donations, rather than on developing new methods of giving, despite this latter approach sharing the same objective. This article explores the rise of one such new vehicle - giving circles - defined as groups of individuals who donate money and/or time and have a say in the distribution of these resources. Scholarship on giving circles has largely focused on the United States (US), yet they are found increasingly in other parts of the world. This article focuses on how giving circles in the UK and Ireland are structured and administered; how and why they are formed; their key activities; typical characteristics of members; and why people join. It concludes by noting distinctive characteristics of giving circles in the UK and Ireland and setting out a future programme to further understanding in this area

    A dynamic systems approach to harness the potential of social tipping

    Social tipping points are promising levers to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emission targets. They describe how social, political, economic or technological systems can move rapidly into a new state if cascading positive feedback mechanisms are triggered. Analysing the potential of social tipping for rapid decarbonization requires considering the inherent complexity of social systems. Here, we identify that existing scientific literature is inclined to a narrative-based account of social tipping, lacks a broad empirical framework and a multi-systems view. We subsequently outline a dynamic systems approach that entails (i) a systems outlook involving interconnected feedback mechanisms alongside cross-system and cross-scale interactions, and including a socioeconomic and environmental injustice perspective (ii) directed data collection efforts to provide empirical evidence for and monitor social tipping dynamics, (iii) global, integrated, descriptive modelling to project future dynamics and provide ex-ante evidence for interventions. Research on social tipping must be accordingly solidified for climate policy relevance

    Integrating Equity Considerations into Agent-Based Modeling: A Conceptual Framework and Practical Guidance

    Advancing equity is a complex challenge for society, science, and policy. Agent-based models are increasingly used as scientific tools to advance understanding of systems, inform decision-making, and share knowledge. Yet, equity has not received due attention within the agent-based modeling (ABM) literature. In this paper, we develop a conceptual framework and provide guidance for integrating equity considerations into ABM research and modeling practice. The framework conceptualizes ABM as interfacing with equity outcomes at two levels (the science-society interface and within the model itself) and the modeler as a filter and lens that projects knowledge between the target system and the model. Within the framework, we outline three complementary, equity-advancing action pathways: (1) engage stakeholders, (2) acknowledge positionality and bias, and (3) assess equity with agent-based models. For Pathway 1, we summarize existing guidance within the participatory modeling literature. For Pathway 2, we introduce the positionality and bias document as a tool to promote modeler and stakeholder reflexivity throughout the modeling process. For Pathway 3, we synthesize a typology of approaches for modeling equity and ffer a set of preliminary suggestions for best practice. By engaging with these action pathways, modelers both reduce the risks of inadvertently perpetuating inequity and harness the opportunities for ABM to play a larger role in creating a more equitable future

    GAUMLESS: Modelling the Capitalization of Human Action on the Internet

    The focus of this thesis is on a field of study related to information design, namely visual modelling, and the application of its concepts and frameworks to a case study on the use of Internet cookies. It represents an opportunity to enhance information design’s relevancy as an adaptive discipline; i.e., borrowing and learning from various knowledge domains in representing phenomena for the purposes of decision-making and action-generation. As a critical design project, the thesis endeavors to inform Internet users and other audiences of the exploitation inherent in the data-mining processes employed by websites for generating cookies and to expose the risks to users. This focus was motivated by a concern with the ignorance, or at least the casual awareness, of many Internet users of the implications of giving their consent to the use of cookies. The thesis employs a qualitative research methodology that consolidates information design principles, conventions and processes; a distillation of relevant modelling frameworks; and pan-disciplinary philosophical perspectives (i.e., cybernetics, systems theory, and social system theory) into a visual model that represents the cookie system. The significance of this study’s contribution to design theory lies in the manner in which boundaries to its research methodology (based on the study’s purpose, goals and targeted audience) were determined and the singular visual modelling process developed in consideration of the myriad relevant knowledge-domains, extensive data sources and esoteric technical aspects of the system under study. Whereas simplification in a visual model is a key factor for knowledge-creation and establishing usability, its effectiveness to inform and inspire is also measured by its level of accuracy and comprehensiveness. In concentrating on human behaviour and decision-making contexts and applications, information design has the capacity to help meet personal and social needs and consequently can be a societal force for innovation and progress. The thesis’ visual model is an example of this potential in its intention to represent the cookie process and to raise awareness of its personal and social implications. The study validates the responsibility of the information designer to not prescribe actions or solutions but rather to impart knowledge, support decision-making, and inspire critical reflection

    Serious Games Integrated Framework: Keep Them in the Flow

    Serious games aim to improve the learner experience, allowing them to build knowledge and skills using untraditional learning tools. Supply chain management (SCM) and similar complex fields are promising areas for the adoption of such technology. Complex interrelated concepts and the difficulties faced by the student in understanding and managing the complete image of the field prompts teachers to search for alternative learning tools. This paper proposes an integrated simulation-based serious games framework and describes an implemented serious game called AuSuM (AUtomobile SUpply chain Management). The framework explains the required components and the relationships between them in order to improve engagement and motivation for students in the classroom. This framework was tested through the implemented game, and piloted in real classrooms where it demonstrated improvement in students’ engagement, motivation and knowledge development
