    The future of trans-Atlantic collaboration in modelling and simulation of Cyber-Physical Systems - A strategic research agenda for collaboration

    Smart systems, in which sophisticated software/hardware is embedded in physical systems, are part of everyday life. From simple products with embedded decision-making software, to massive systems in which hundreds of systems, each with hundreds or thousands of embedded processors, interoperate the use of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) will continue to expand. There has been substantial investment in CPS research in Europe and the United States. Through a series of workshops and other events, the TAMS4CPS project has established that there is mutual benefit in the European Union and US collaborating on CPS research. An agenda for collaborative research into modelling and simulation for CPS is thus set forth in the publication at hand. The agenda includes models for many different purposes, including fundamental concepts, design models (e.g. architectures), predictive techniques, real-time control, human-CPS interaction, and CPS governance. Within this framework, seven important themes have been identified where mutual benefits can be realised by EU-US cooperation. To actively advance research and innovation in these fields, a number of collaboration mechanisms is presented and concrete actions to encourage, enhance and implement trans-Atlantic collaboration in modelling and simulation of CPS are recommended

    Research shows that educational leaders hesitate to embrace technology because of the need to balance diverse learning approaches along with pressure to promote and expect teachers to integrate technology chosen primarily by district leaders. While educational technology marries educational theory and practice with technology tools, its intention is still to promote education for all learners. This action research study of administrative leaders in Callery Blossom Independent School District investigates the perspective and understanding of educational technology through interviews of campus principals and a content analysis of lesson plans and campus improvement plans. Educational leaders can use this research to develop and promote a collaborative understanding of educational technology to focus on continuous improvement processes by supporting successful campus technology integrations

    In recent years we may observe increasing interest in the development of social innovation both regarding theory as well as the practice of responding to social problems and challenges. One of the crucial challenges at the beginning of the 21st century is population ageing. Various new and innovative initiatives, programs, schemes, and projects to respond to negative consequences of this demographic process are emerging around the world. However, social theories related to ageing are still insufficiently combined with these new practices, social movements, organisational models, and institutions. Many scholars are still using notions and tools from classical theories of social gerontology or the sociology of ageing such as disengagement theory, activity theory, and successful and productive ageing. Such theories do not sufficiently explain ageing in the context of, for example, a broad use of the information and communications technologies (ICTs) including robotics and automation, new healthcare and long-term care models, advancements in the development and governance of age-friendly environments, and public engagement of older adults into co-production of services delivered by public, private, non-governmental as well as non-formal entities
