Joint Distributed Access Point Selection and Power Allocation in Cognitive Radio Networks
Spectrum management has been identified as a crucial step towards enabling
the technology of the cognitive radio network (CRN). Most of the current works
dealing with spectrum management in the CRN focus on a single task of the
problem, e.g., spectrum sensing, spectrum decision, spectrum sharing or
spectrum mobility. In this work, we argue that for certain network
configurations, jointly performing several tasks of the spectrum management
improves the spectrum efficiency. Specifically, we study the uplink resource
management problem in a CRN where there exist multiple cognitive users (CUs)
and access points (APs), with each AP operates on a set of non-overlapping
channels. The CUs, in order to maximize their uplink transmission rates, have
to associate to a suitable AP (spectrum decision), and to share the channels
belong to this AP with other CUs (spectrum sharing). These tasks are clearly
interdependent, and the problem of how they should be carried out efficiently
and distributedly is still open in the literature.
In this work we formulate this joint spectrum decision and spectrum sharing
problem into a non-cooperative game, in which the feasible strategy of a player
contains a discrete variable and a continuous vector. The structure of the game
is hence very different from most non-cooperative spectrum management game
proposed in the literature. We provide characterization of the Nash Equilibrium
(NE) of this game, and present a set of novel algorithms that allow the CUs to
distributively and efficiently select the suitable AP and share the channels
with other CUs. Finally, we study the properties of the proposed algorithms as

An Organizational Learning Approach to Perceiving and Addressing Algorithmic Bias in Agricultural Settings
Organizations are deploying artificial intelligence (AI) to improve decision-making and performance. AI-enabled systems are used to automate the decision-making process or assist human choice by providing algorithmically generated information through predictive analytics and recommendations. However, the ability of these systems to improve organizational performance is constrained by biases within the algorithms. This study proposes to use organizational learning as a theoretical lens to understand how users perceive and respond to these biases using their experiential learning and cognitive search processes. The research is set within the agricultural context, as farm organizations are increasingly adopting AI-enabled systems to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability. However, because of complexities associated with the natural environment, algorithmic biases in the recommendation could threat these outcomes. The study proposes to conduct multiple case studies to explore how users of AI-enabled agricultural systems perceive algorithmic bias and develop coping mechanisms to improve agricultural performance. Cognitive biases in developing biased Artificial Intelligence recruitment system
Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a business context is designed to provide organizations with valuable insight into decision-making and planning. Although AI can help managers make decisions, it may pose unprecedented issues, such as datasets and implicit biases built into algorithms. To assist managers with making unbiased effective decisions, AI needs to be unbiased too. Therefore, it is important to identify biases that may arise in the design and use of AI. One of the areas where AI is increasingly used is the Human Resources recruitment process. This article reports on the preliminary findings of an empirical study answering the question: how do cognitive biases arise in AI? We propose a model to determine people’s role in developing AI recruitment systems. Identifying the sources of cognitive biases can provide insight into how to develop unbiased AI. The academic and practical implications of the study are discussed
DYNAMICS OF COLLABORATIVE NAVIGATION AND APPLYING DATA DRIVEN METHODS TO IMPROVE PEDESTRIAN NAVIGATION INSTRUCTIONS AT DECISION POINTS FOR PEOPLE OF VARYING SPATIAL APTITUDES
Cognitive Geography seeks to understand individual decision-making variations based on fundamental cognitive differences between people of varying spatial aptitudes. Understanding fundamental behavioral discrepancies among individuals is an important step to improve navigation algorithms and the overall travel experience. Contemporary navigation aids, although helpful in providing turn-by-turn directions, lack important capabilities to distinguish decision points for their features and importance. Existing systems lack the ability to generate landmark or decision point based instructions using real-time or crowd sourced data. Systems cannot customize personalized instructions for individuals based on inherent spatial ability, travel history, or situations.
This dissertation presents a novel experimental setup to examine simultaneous wayfinding behavior for people of varying spatial abilities. This study reveals discrepancies in the information processing, landmark preference and spatial information communication among groups possessing differing abilities.
Empirical data is used to validate computational salience techniques that endeavor to predict the difficulty of decision point use from the structure of the routes. Outlink score and outflux score, two meta-algorithms that derive secondary scores from existing metrics of network analysis, are explored. These two algorithms approximate human cognitive variation in navigation by analyzing neighboring and directional effect properties of decision point nodes within a routing network. The results are validated by a human wayfinding experiment, results show that these metrics generally improve the prediction of errors.
In addition, a model of personalized weighting for users\u27 characteristics is derived from a SVMrank machine learning method. Such a system can effectively rank decision point difficulty based on user behavior and derive weighted models for navigators that reflect their individual tendencies. The weights reflect certain characteristics of groups. Such models can serve as personal travel profiles, and potentially be used to complement sense-of-direction surveys in classifying wayfinders.
A prototype with augmented instructions for pedestrian navigation is created and tested, with particular focus on investigating how augmented instructions at particular decision points affect spatial learning. The results demonstrate that survey knowledge acquisition is improved for people with low spatial ability while decreased for people of high spatial ability.

Mining learning preferences in web-based instruction: Holists vs. Serialists
Web-based instruction programs are used by learners with diverse knowledge, skills and needs. These differences determine their preferences for the design of Web-based instruction programs and ultimately influence learners' success in using them. Cognitive style has been found to significantly affect learners' preferences of web-based instruction programs. However, the majority of previous studies focus on Field Dependence/Independence. Pask's Holist/Serialist dimension has conceptual links with Field Dependence/Independence but it is left mostly unstudied. Therefore, this study focuses on identifying how this dimension of cognitive style affects learner preferences of Web-based instruction programs. A data mining approach is used to illustrate the difference in preferences between Holists and Serialists. The findings show that there are clear differences in regard to content presentation and navigation support. Why am I seeing this? Deconstructing algorithm literacy through the lens of users
Purpose: As algorithms permeate nearly every aspect of digital life, artificial intelligence (AI) systems exert a growing influence on human behavior in the digital milieu. Despite its popularity, little is known about the roles and effects of algorithmic literacy (AL) on user acceptance. The purpose of this study is to contextualize AL in the AI environment by empirically examining the role of AL in developing users\u27 information processing in algorithms. The authors analyze how users engage with over-the-top (OTT) platforms, what awareness the user has of the algorithmic platform and how awareness of AL may impact their interaction with these systems. Design/methodology/approach: This study employed multiple-group equivalence methods to compare two group invariance and the hypotheses concerning differences in the effects of AL. The method examined how AL helps users to envisage, understand and work with algorithms, depending on their understanding of the control of the information flow embedded within them. Findings: Our findings clarify what functions AL plays in the adoption of OTT platforms and how users experience algorithms, particularly in contexts where AI is used in OTT algorithms to provide personalized recommendations. The results point to the heuristic functions of AL in connection with its ties in trust and ensuing attitude and behavior. Heuristic processes using AL strongly affect the credibility of recommendations and the way users understand the accuracy and personalization of results. The authors argue that critical assessment of AL must be understood not just about how it is used to evaluate the trust of service, but also regarding how it is performatively related in the modeling of algorithmic personalization. Research limitations/implications: The relation of AL and trust in an algorithm lends strategic direction in developing user-centered algorithms in OTT contexts. As the AI industry has faced decreasing credibility, the role of user trust will surely give insights on credibility and trust in algorithms. To better understand how to cultivate a sense of literacy regarding algorithm consumption, the AI industry could provide examples of what positive engagement with algorithm platforms looks like. Originality/value: User cognitive processes of AL provide conceptual frameworks for algorithm services and a practical guideline for the design of OTT services. Framing the cognitive process of AL in reference to trust has made relevant contributions to the ongoing debate surrounding algorithms and literacy. While the topic of AL is widely recognized, empirical evidence on the effects of AL is relatively rare, particularly from the user\u27s behavioral perspective.
