    An Efficiency-Focused Design of Direct-DC Loads in Buildings

    Despite the recent interest in direct current (DC) power distribution in buildings, the market for DC-ready loads remains small. The existing DC loads in various products or research test beds are not always designed to efficiently leverage the benefits of DC. This work addresses a pressing need for a study into the development of efficient DC loads. In particular, it focuses on documenting and demonstrating how to best leverage a DC input to eliminate or improve conversion stages in a load’s power converter. This work identifies how typical building loads can benefit from DC input, including bath fans, refrigerators, task lights, and zone lighting. It then details the development of several prototypes that demonstrate efficiency savings with DC. The most efficient direct-DC loads are explicitly designed for DC from the ground up, rather than from an AC modification

    Homogeneous Spiking Neuromorphic System for Real-World Pattern Recognition

    A neuromorphic chip that combines CMOS analog spiking neurons and memristive synapses offers a promising solution to brain-inspired computing, as it can provide massive neural network parallelism and density. Previous hybrid analog CMOS-memristor approaches required extensive CMOS circuitry for training, and thus eliminated most of the density advantages gained by the adoption of memristor synapses. Further, they used different waveforms for pre and post-synaptic spikes that added undesirable circuit overhead. Here we describe a hardware architecture that can feature a large number of memristor synapses to learn real-world patterns. We present a versatile CMOS neuron that combines integrate-and-fire behavior, drives passive memristors and implements competitive learning in a compact circuit module, and enables in-situ plasticity in the memristor synapses. We demonstrate handwritten-digits recognition using the proposed architecture using transistor-level circuit simulations. As the described neuromorphic architecture is homogeneous, it realizes a fundamental building block for large-scale energy-efficient brain-inspired silicon chips that could lead to next-generation cognitive computing.Comment: This is a preprint of an article accepted for publication in IEEE Journal on Emerging and Selected Topics in Circuits and Systems, vol 5, no. 2, June 201

    The first phase of the Multi-kw dc Power Distribution Technology Program is reported and involves the test and evaluation of a technology breadboard in a specifically designed test facility according to design concepts developed in a previous study on space vehicle electrical power processing, distribution, and control. The static and dynamic performance, fault isolation, reliability, electromagnetic interference characterisitics, and operability factors of high distribution systems were studied in order to gain a technology base for the use of high voltage dc systems in future aerospace vehicles. Detailed technical descriptions are presented and include data for the following: (1) dynamic interactions due to operation of solid state and electromechanical switchgear; (2) multiplexed and computer controlled supervision and checkout methods; (3) pulse width modulator design; and (4) cable design factors

    Space station automation of common module power management and distribution

    The purpose is to automate a breadboard level Power Management and Distribution (PMAD) system which possesses many functional characteristics of a specified Space Station power system. The automation system was built upon 20 kHz ac source with redundancy of the power buses. There are two power distribution control units which furnish power to six load centers which in turn enable load circuits based upon a system generated schedule. The progress in building this specified autonomous system is described. Automation of Space Station Module PMAD was accomplished by segmenting the complete task in the following four independent tasks: (1) develop a detailed approach for PMAD automation; (2) define the software and hardware elements of automation; (3) develop the automation system for the PMAD breadboard; and (4) select an appropriate host processing environment

    Energy harvesting is the way to capture green energy. This can be thought of as a recycling process where energy is converted from one form (here, non-electrical) to another (here, electrical). This is done on the large energy scale as well as low energy scale. The former can enable sustainable operation of facilities, while the latter can have a significant impact on the problems of energy constrained portable applications. Different energy sources can be complementary to one another and combining multiple-source is of great importance. In particular, RF energy harvesting is a natural choice for the portable applications. There are many advantages, such as cordless operation and light-weight. Moreover, the needed infra-structure can possibly be incorporated with wearable and portable devices. RF energy harvesting is an enabling key player for Internet of Things technology. The RF energy harvesting systems consist of external antennas, LC matching networks, RF rectifiers for ac to dc conversion, and sometimes power management. Moreover, combining different energy harvesting sources is essential for robustness and sustainability. Wireless power transfer has recently been applied for battery charging of portable devices. This charging process impacts the daily experience of every human who uses electronic applications. Instead of having many types of cumbersome cords and many different standards while the users are responsible to connect periodically to ac outlets, the new approach is to have the transmitters ready in the near region and can transfer power wirelessly to the devices whenever needed. Wireless power transfer consists of a dc to ac conversion transmitter, coupled inductors between transmitter and receiver, and an ac to dc conversion receiver. Alternative far field operation is still tested for health issues. So, the focus in this study is on near field. The goals of this study are to investigate the possibilities of RF energy harvesting from various sources in the far field, dc energy combining, wireless power transfer in the near field, the underlying power management strategies, and the integration on silicon. This integration is the ultimate goal for cheap solutions to enable the technology for broader use. All systems were designed, implemented and tested to demonstrate proof-of concept prototypes

    This paper presents the design and construction of a medium power, synchronous, electronic switch and associated timing and control circuits. The unit described is capable of controlling a 20 ampere resistive or inductive load from a 110/220 volt, 60 Hz excitation source. Thyristors are used as the active switching elements. The period of the on/off switching cycle may be varied from 1/60 second to 8 1/2 seconds. Turn-on and turn-off may occur at independently selected phase angles relative to the reference frequency source.     Development of a Dynamic Performance Management Framework for Naval Ship Power System using Model-Based Predictive Control

    Medium-Voltage Direct-Current (MVDC) power system has been considered as the trending technology for future All-Electric Ships (AES) to produce, convert and distribute electrical power. With the wide employment of highrequency power electronics converters and motor drives in DC system, accurate and fast assessment of system dynamic behaviors , as well as the optimization of system transient performance have become serious concerns for system-level studies, high-level control designs and power management algorithm development. The proposed technique presents a coordinated and automated approach to determine the system adjustment strategy for naval power systems to improve the transient performance and prevent potential instability following a system contingency. In contrast with the conventional design schemes that heavily rely on the human operators and pre-specified rules/set points, we focus on the development of the capability to automatically and efficiently detect and react to system state changes following disturbances and or damages by incooperating different system components to formulate an overall system-level solution. To achieve this objective, we propose a generic model-based predictive management framework that can be applied to a variety of Shipboard Power System (SPS) applications to meet the stringent performance requirements under different operating conditions. The proposed technique is proven to effectively prevent the system from instability caused by known and unknown disturbances with little or none human intervention under a variety of operation conditions. The management framework proposed in this dissertation is designed based on the concept of Model Predictive Control (MPC) techniques. A numerical approximation of the actual system is used to predict future system behaviors based on the current states and the candidate control input sequences. Based on the predictions the optimal control solution is chosen and applied as the current control input. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed framework can be evaluated conveniently based on a series of performance criteria such as fitness, robustness and computational overhead. An automatic system modeling, analysis and synthesis software environment is also introduced in this dissertation to facilitate the rapid implementation of the proposed performance management framework according to various testing scenarios

    Design of an active orthotic device for joint management.

    Existing treatment programs and procedures are incapable of addressing the complications encountered with patients who experience spasticity and hypertonia related joint contractures. Current passive therapy procedures and devices are only capable of managing the extent of joint contractures on patients with chronic and acute onset severe neurological disorders. The project was conceived as a means to develop an active device that is capable of adapting to the state of the joint to mange the extent of contractures and to permit consideration for the prevalence of spastic activity episodes and hypertonia. The project focused on the design of the physical prototype and the controller software in order to regulate the operation of such a device. Additionally, the signal conditioning and sensor package was developed as determined to be appropriate for the requirements of the device. The operation of the device was verified in the bench-top environment in the laboratory and on human subjects in order to qualify, verify, and tune the position tracking capability of the device, spastic activity detection and rejection capability of the device, and the operation of patient controlled devices. The overall operation of the device was evaluated on a group of human subjects. Using simulated contractures and spastic activity episodes, the validity of the preliminary deterministic test data was confirmed as was the appropriate operation of the device. The end prototype devices are capable of responding to a spastic activity episode by maintaining a constant load in addition to mimicking the passive extension behavior of conventional commercial devices
