Digital Image Access & Retrieval
The 33th Annual Clinic on Library Applications of Data Processing, held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in March of 1996, addressed the theme of "Digital Image Access & Retrieval." The papers from this conference cover a wide range of topics concerning digital imaging technology for visual resource collections. Papers covered three general areas: (1) systems, planning, and implementation; (2) automatic and semi-automatic indexing; and (3) preservation with the bulk of the conference focusing on indexing and retrieval.published or submitted for publicatio
Digital Color Imaging
This paper surveys current technology and research in the area of digital
color imaging. In order to establish the background and lay down terminology,
fundamental concepts of color perception and measurement are first presented
us-ing vector-space notation and terminology. Present-day color recording and
reproduction systems are reviewed along with the common mathematical models
used for representing these devices. Algorithms for processing color images for
display and communication are surveyed, and a forecast of research trends is
attempted. An extensive bibliography is provided
Capturing natural-colour 3D models of insects for species discovery
Collections of biological specimens are fundamental to scientific
understanding and characterization of natural diversity. This paper presents a
system for liberating useful information from physical collections by bringing
specimens into the digital domain so they can be more readily shared, analyzed,
annotated and compared. It focuses on insects and is strongly motivated by the
desire to accelerate and augment current practices in insect taxonomy which
predominantly use text, 2D diagrams and images to describe and characterize
species. While these traditional kinds of descriptions are informative and
useful, they cannot cover insect specimens "from all angles" and precious
specimens are still exchanged between researchers and collections for this
reason. Furthermore, insects can be complex in structure and pose many
challenges to computer vision systems. We present a new prototype for a
practical, cost-effective system of off-the-shelf components to acquire
natural-colour 3D models of insects from around 3mm to 30mm in length. Colour
images are captured from different angles and focal depths using a digital
single lens reflex (DSLR) camera rig and two-axis turntable. These 2D images
are processed into 3D reconstructions using software based on a visual hull
algorithm. The resulting models are compact (around 10 megabytes), afford
excellent optical resolution, and can be readily embedded into documents and
web pages, as well as viewed on mobile devices. The system is portable, safe,
relatively affordable, and complements the sort of volumetric data that can be
acquired by computed tomography. This system provides a new way to augment the
description and documentation of insect species holotypes, reducing the need to
handle or ship specimens. It opens up new opportunities to collect data for
research, education, art, entertainment, biodiversity assessment and
biosecurity control.Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, PLOS ONE journa
Content-based image analysis with applications to the multifunction printer imaging pipeline and image databases
Image understanding is one of the most important topics for various applications. Most of image understanding studies focus on content-based approach while some others also rely on meta data of images. Image understanding includes several sub-topics such as classification, segmentation, retrieval and automatic annotation etc., which are heavily studied recently. This thesis proposes several new methods and algorithms for image classification, retrieval and automatic tag generation. The proposed algorithms have been tested and verified in multiple platforms. For image classification, our proposed method can complete classification in real-time under hardware constraints of all-in-one printer and adaptively improve itself by online learning. Another image understanding engine includes both classification and image quality analysis is designed to solve the optimal compression problem of printing system. Our proposed image retrieval algorithm can be applied to either PC or mobile device to improve the hybrid learning experience. We also develop a new matrix factorization algorithm to better recover the image meta data (tag). The proposed algorithm outperforms other existing matrix factorization methods
A survey of computer uses in music
This thesis covers research into the mathematical basis inherent in music including review of projects related to optical character recognition (OCR) of musical symbols. Research was done about fractals creating new pieces by assigning pitches to numbers. Existing musical pieces can be taken apart and reassembled creating new ideas for composers. Musical notation understanding is covered and its requirement for the recognition of a music sheet by the computer for editing and reproduction purposes is explained. The first phase of a musical OCR was created in this thesis with the recognition of staff lines on a good quality image. Modifications will need to be made to take care of noise and tilted images that may result from scanning
The Wiltshire Wills Feasibility Study
The Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office has nearly ninety thousand wills in its care. These records are neither adequately catalogued nor secured against loss by facsimile microfilm copies. With support from the Heritage Lottery Fund the Record Office has begun to produce suitable finding aids for the material. Beginning with this feasibility study the Record Office is developing a strategy to ensure the that facsimiles to protect the collection against risk of loss or damage and to improve public access are created.<p></p>
This feasibility study explores the different methodologies that can be used to assist the preservation and conservation of the collection and improve public access to it. The study aims to produce a strategy that will enable the Record Office to create digital facsimiles of the Wills in its care for access purposes and to also create preservation quality microfilms. The strategy aims to seek the most cost effective and time efficient approach to the problem and identifies ways to optimise the processes by drawing on the experience of other similar projects. This report provides a set of guidelines and recommendations to ensure the best use of the resources available for to provide the most robust preservation strategy and to ensure that future access to the Wills as an information resource can be flexible, both local and remote, and sustainable
Onboard shuttle on-line software requirements system: Prototype
The prototype discussed here was developed as proof of a concept for a system which could support high volumes of requirements documents with integrated text and graphics; the solution proposed here could be extended to other projects whose goal is to place paper documents in an electronic system for viewing and printing purposes. The technical problems (such as conversion of documentation between word processors, management of a variety of graphics file formats, and difficulties involved in scanning integrated text and graphics) would be very similar for other systems of this type. Indeed, technological advances in areas such as scanning hardware and software and display terminals insure that some of the problems encountered here will be solved in the near-term (less than five years). Examples of these solvable problems include automated input of integrated text and graphics, errors in the recognition process, and the loss of image information which results from the digitization process. The solution developed for the Online Software Requirements System is modular and allows hardware and software components to be upgraded or replaced as industry solutions mature. The extensive commercial software content allows the NASA customer to apply resources to solving the problem and maintaining documents
