    A Structured Design Methodology for High Performance VLSI Arrays

    abstract: The geometric growth in the integrated circuit technology due to transistor scaling also with system-on-chip design strategy, the complexity of the integrated circuit has increased manifold. Short time to market with high reliability and performance is one of the most competitive challenges. Both custom and ASIC design methodologies have evolved over the time to cope with this but the high manual labor in custom and statistic design in ASIC are still causes of concern. This work proposes a new circuit design strategy that focuses mostly on arrayed structures like TLB, RF, Cache, IPCAM etc. that reduces the manual effort to a great extent and also makes the design regular, repetitive still achieving high performance. The method proposes making the complete design custom schematic but using the standard cells. This requires adding some custom cells to the already exhaustive library to optimize the design for performance. Once schematic is finalized, the designer places these standard cells in a spreadsheet, placing closely the cells in the critical paths. A Perl script then generates Cadence Encounter compatible placement file. The design is then routed in Encounter. Since designer is the best judge of the circuit architecture, placement by the designer will allow achieve most optimal design. Several designs like IPCAM, issue logic, TLB, RF and Cache designs were carried out and the performance were compared against the fully custom and ASIC flow.     Includes bibliographical references.2016 Summer.With ever increasing demand for lower power consumption, lower cost, and higher performance, designing analog circuits to meet design specifications has become an increasing challenging task, On one hand, analog circuit designers must have intimate knowledge about the underlining silicon process technology's capability to achieve the desired specifications. On the other hand, they must understand the impact of tweaking circuits to satisfy a given specification on all circuit performance parameters. Analog designers have traditionally learned to tackle design problems with numerous circuit simulations using accurate circuit simulators such as SPICE, and have increasingly relied on trial-and-error approaches to reach a converging point. However, the increased complexity with each generation of silicon technology and high dimensionality of searching for solutions, even for some simple analog circuits, have made trial-and-error approaches extremely inefficient, causing long design cycles and often missed market opportunities. Novel rapid and accurate circuit evaluation methods that are tightly integrated with circuit search and optimization methods are needed to aid design productivity. Furthermore, the current design environment with fully distributed licensing and supporting structures is cumbersome at best to allow efficient and up-to-date support for design engineers. With increasing support and licensing costs, fewer and fewer design centers can afford it. Cloud-based software as a service (SaaS) model provides new opportunities for CAD applications. It enables immediate software delivery and update to customers at very low cost. SaaS tools benefit from fast feedback and sharing channels between users and developers and run on hardware resources tailored and provided for them by software vendors. However, web-based tools must perform in a very short turn-around schedule and be always responsive. A new class of analog design tools is presented in this dissertation. The tools provide effective design aid to analog circuit designers with a dash-board control of many important circuit parameters. Fast and accurate circuit evaluations are achieved using a novel lookup-table transistor models (LUT) with novel built-in features tightly integrated with the search engine to achieve desired speed and accuracy. This enables circuit evaluation time several orders faster than SPICE simulations. The proposed architecture for analog design attempts to break the traditional analog design flow using SPICE based trial-and-error methods by providing designers with useful information about the effects of prior design decisions they have made and potential next steps they can take to meet specifications. Benefiting from the advantages offered by web-hosted architectures, the proposed architecture incorporates SaaS as its operating model. The application of the proposed architecture is illustrated by an analog circuit sizer and optimizer. The Γ (Gamma) sizer and optimizer show how web-based design-decision supporting tool can help analog circuit designers to reduce design time and achieve high quality circuit

    High Level Synthesis of Neural Network Chips

    This thesis investigates the development of a silicon compiler dedicated to generate Application-Specific Neural Network Chips (ASNNCs) from a high level C-based behavioural specification language. The aim is to fully integrate the silicon compiler with the ESPRIT II Pygmalion neural programming environment. The integration of these two tools permits the translation of a neural network application specified in nC, the Pygmalion's C-based neural programming language, into either binary (for simulation) or silicon (for execution in hardware). Several applications benefit from this approach, in particular the ones that require real-time execution, for which a true neural computer is required. This research comprises two major parts: extension of the Pygmalion neural programming environment, to support automatic generation of neural network chips from the nC specification language; and implementation of the high level synthesis part of the neural silicon compiler. The extension of the neural programming environment has been developed to adapt the nC language to hardware constraints, and to provide the environment with a simulation tool to test in advance the performance of the neural chips. Firstly, new hardware-specific requisites have been incorporated to nC. However, special attention has been taken to avoid transforming nC into a hardware-oriented language, since the system assumes minimum (or even no) knowledge of VLSI design from the application developer. Secondly, a simulator for neural network hardware has been developed, which assesses how well the generated circuit will perform the neural computation. Lastly, a hardware library of neural network models associated with a target VLSI architecture has been built. The development of the neural silicon compiler focuses on the high level synthesis part of the process. The goal of the silicon compiler is to take nC as the input language and automatically translate it into one or more identical integrated circuits, which are specified in VHDL (the IEEE standard hardware description language) at the register transfer level. The development of the high level synthesis comprises four major parts: firstly, compilation and software-like optimisations of nC; secondly, transformation of the compiled code into a graph-based internal representation, which has been designed to be the basis for the hardware synthesis; thirdly, further transformations and hardware-like optimisations on the internal representation; and finally, creation of the neural chip's data path and control unit that implement the behaviour specified in nC. Special attention has been devoted to the creation of optimised hardware structures for the ASNNCs employing both phases of neural computing on-chip: recall and learning. This is achieved through the data path and control synthesis algorithms, which adopt a heuristic approach that targets the generated hardware structure of the neural chip in a specific VLSI architecture, namely the Generic Neuron. The viability, concerning the effective use of silicon area versus speed, has been evaluated through the automatic generation of a VHDL description for the neural chip employing the Back Propagation neural network model. This description is compared with the one created manually by a hardware designer

    Memory and information processing in neuromorphic systems

    A striking difference between brain-inspired neuromorphic processors and current von Neumann processors architectures is the way in which memory and processing is organized. As Information and Communication Technologies continue to address the need for increased computational power through the increase of cores within a digital processor, neuromorphic engineers and scientists can complement this need by building processor architectures where memory is distributed with the processing. In this paper we present a survey of brain-inspired processor architectures that support models of cortical networks and deep neural networks. These architectures range from serial clocked implementations of multi-neuron systems to massively parallel asynchronous ones and from purely digital systems to mixed analog/digital systems which implement more biological-like models of neurons and synapses together with a suite of adaptation and learning mechanisms analogous to the ones found in biological nervous systems. We describe the advantages of the different approaches being pursued and present the challenges that need to be addressed for building artificial neural processing systems that can display the richness of behaviors seen in biological systems.Comment: Submitted to Proceedings of IEEE, review of recently proposed neuromorphic computing platforms and system

    Languages and Tools for Optimization of Large-Scale Systems

    Modeling and simulation are established techniques for solving design problems in a wide range of engineering disciplines today. Dedicated computer languages, such as Modelica, and efficient software tools are available. In this thesis, an extension of Modelica, Optimica, targeted at dynamic optimization of Modelica models is proposed. In order to demonstrate the Optimica extension, supporting software has been developed. This includes a modularly extensible Modelica compiler, the JModelica compiler, and an extension that supports also Optimica. A Modelica library for paper machine dryer section modeling, DryLib, has been developed. The classes in the library enable structured and hierarchical modeling of dryer sections at the application user level, while offering extensibility for the expert user. Based on DryLib, a parameter optimization problem, a model reduction problem, and an optimization-based control problem have been formulated and solved. A start-up optimization problem for a plate reactor has been formulated in Optimica, and solved by means of the Optimica compiler. In addition, the robustness properties of the start-up trajectories have been evaluated by means of Monte-Carlo simulation. In many control systems, it is necessary to consider interaction with a user. In this thesis, a manual control scheme for an unstable inverted pendulum system, where the inputs are bounded, is presented. The proposed controller is based on the notion of reachability sets and guarantees semi global stability for all references. An inverted pendulum on a two wheels robot has been developed. A distributed control system, including sensor processing algorithms and a stabilizing control scheme has been implemented on three on-board embedded processors
