Migration energy aware reconfigurations of virtual network function instances in NFV architectures
Network function virtualization (NFV) is a new network architecture framework that implements network functions in software running on a pool of shared commodity servers. NFV can provide the infrastructure flexibility and agility needed to successfully compete in today's evolving communications landscape. Any service is represented by a service function chain (SFC) that is a set of VNFs to be executed according to a given order. The running of VNFs needs the instantiation of VNF instances (VNFIs) that are software modules executed on virtual machines. This paper deals with the migration problem of the VNFIs needed in the low traffic periods to turn OFF servers and consequently to save energy consumption. Though the consolidation allows for energy saving, it has also negative effects as the quality of service degradation or the energy consumption needed for moving the memories associated to the VNFI to be migrated. We focus on cold migration in which virtual machines are redundant and suspended before performing migration. We propose a migration policy that determines when and where to migrate VNFI in response to changes to SFC request intensity. The objective is to minimize the total energy consumption given by the sum of the consolidation and migration energies. We formulate the energy aware VNFI migration problem and after proving that it is NP-hard, we propose a heuristic based on the Viterbi algorithm able to determine the migration policy with low computational complexity. The results obtained by the proposed heuristic show how the introduced policy allows for a reduction of the migration energy and consequently lower total energy consumption with respect to the traditional policies. Optimality of Treating Interference as Noise: A Combinatorial Perspective
For single-antenna Gaussian interference channels, we re-formulate the
problem of determining the Generalized Degrees of Freedom (GDoF) region
achievable by treating interference as Gaussian noise (TIN) derived in [3] from
a combinatorial perspective. We show that the TIN power control problem can be
cast into an assignment problem, such that the globally optimal power
allocation variables can be obtained by well-known polynomial time algorithms.
Furthermore, the expression of the TIN-Achievable GDoF region (TINA region) can
be substantially simplified with the aid of maximum weighted matchings. We also
provide conditions under which the TINA region is a convex polytope that relax
those in [3]. For these new conditions, together with a channel connectivity
(i.e., interference topology) condition, we show TIN optimality for a new class
of interference networks that is not included, nor includes, the class found in
[3].
Building on the above insights, we consider the problem of joint link
scheduling and power control in wireless networks, which has been widely
studied as a basic physical layer mechanism for device-to-device (D2D)
communications. Inspired by the relaxed TIN channel strength condition as well
as the assignment-based power allocation, we propose a low-complexity
GDoF-based distributed link scheduling and power control mechanism (ITLinQ+)
that improves upon the ITLinQ scheme proposed in [4] and further improves over
the heuristic approach known as FlashLinQ. It is demonstrated by simulation
that ITLinQ+ provides significant average network throughput gains over both
ITLinQ and FlashLinQ, and yet still maintains the same level of implementation
complexity. More notably, the energy efficiency of the newly proposed ITLinQ+
is substantially larger than that of ITLinQ and FlashLinQ, which is desirable

Efficient Detectors for MIMO-OFDM Systems under Spatial Correlation Antenna Arrays
This work analyzes the performance of the implementable detectors for
multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division
multiplexing (OFDM) technique under specific and realistic operation system
condi- tions, including antenna correlation and array configuration.
Time-domain channel model has been used to evaluate the system performance
under realistic communication channel and system scenarios, including different
channel correlation, modulation order and antenna arrays configurations. A
bunch of MIMO-OFDM detectors were analyzed for the purpose of achieve high
performance combined with high capacity systems and manageable computational
complexity. Numerical Monte-Carlo simulations (MCS) demonstrate the channel
selectivity effect, while the impact of the number of antennas, adoption of
linear against heuristic-based detection schemes, and the spatial correlation
effect under linear and planar antenna arrays are analyzed in the MIMO-OFDM

Offline and online power aware resource allocation algorithms with migration and delay constraints

This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/In order to handle advanced mobile broadband services and Internet of Things (IoT), future Internet and 5G networks are expected to leverage the use of network virtualization, be much faster, have greater capacities, provide lower latencies, and significantly be power efficient than current mobile technologies. Therefore, this paper proposes three power aware algorithms for offline, online, and migration applications, solving the resource allocation problem within the frameworks of network function virtualization (NFV) environments in fractions of a second. The proposed algorithms target minimizing the total costs and power consumptions in the physical network through sufficiently allocating the least physical resources to host the demands of the virtual network services, and put into saving mode all other not utilized physical components. Simulations and evaluations of the offline algorithm compared to the state-of-art resulted on lower total costs by 32%. In addition to that, the online algorithm was tested through four different experiments, and the results argued that the overall power consumption of the physical network was highly dependent on the demands’ lifetimes, and the strictness of the required end-to-end delay. Spanning trees short or small
We study the problem of finding small trees. Classical network design
problems are considered with the additional constraint that only a specified
number of nodes are required to be connected in the solution. A
prototypical example is the MST problem in which we require a tree of
minimum weight spanning at least nodes in an edge-weighted graph. We show
that the MST problem is NP-hard even for points in the Euclidean plane. We
provide approximation algorithms with performance ratio for the
general edge-weighted case and for the case of points in the
plane. Polynomial-time exact solutions are also presented for the class of
decomposable graphs which includes trees, series-parallel graphs, and bounded
bandwidth graphs, and for points on the boundary of a convex region in the
Euclidean plane. We also investigate the problem of finding short trees, and
more generally, that of finding networks with minimum diameter. A simple
technique is used to provide a polynomial-time solution for finding -trees
of minimum diameter. We identify easy and hard problems arising in finding

Timely Data Delivery in a Realistic Bus Network
Abstract—WiFi-enabled buses and stops may form the backbone of a metropolitan delay tolerant network, that exploits nearby communications, temporary storage at stops, and predictable bus mobility to deliver non-real time information. This paper studies the problem of how to route data from its source to its destination in order to maximize the delivery probability by a given deadline. We assume to know the bus schedule, but we take into account that randomness, due to road traffic conditions or passengers boarding and alighting, affects bus mobility. We propose a simple stochastic model for bus arrivals at stops, supported by a study of real-life traces collected in a large urban network. A succinct graph representation of this model allows us to devise an optimal (under our model) single-copy routing algorithm and then extend it to cases where several copies of the same data are permitted. Through an extensive simulation study, we compare the optimal routing algorithm with three other approaches: minimizing the expected traversal time over our graph, minimizing the number of hops a packet can travel, and a recently-proposed heuristic based on bus frequencies. Our optimal algorithm outperforms all of them, but most of the times it essentially reduces to minimizing the expected traversal time. For values of deadlines close to the expected delivery time, the multi-copy extension requires only 10 copies to reach almost the performance of the costly flooding approach. I
A Survey of Pipelined Workflow Scheduling: Models and Algorithms
International audienceA large class of applications need to execute the same workflow on different data sets of identical size. Efficient execution of such applications necessitates intelligent distribution of the application components and tasks on a parallel machine, and the execution can be orchestrated by utilizing task-, data-, pipelined-, and/or replicated-parallelism. The scheduling problem that encompasses all of these techniques is called pipelined workflow scheduling, and it has been widely studied in the last decade. Multiple models and algorithms have flourished to tackle various programming paradigms, constraints, machine behaviors or optimization goals.
