Deep Learning: Our Miraculous Year 1990-1991
In 2020, we will celebrate that many of the basic ideas behind the deep
learning revolution were published three decades ago within fewer than 12
months in our "Annus Mirabilis" or "Miraculous Year" 1990-1991 at TU Munich.
Back then, few people were interested, but a quarter century later, neural
networks based on these ideas were on over 3 billion devices such as
smartphones, and used many billions of times per day, consuming a significant

Application of Advanced Early Warning Systems with Adaptive Protection
This project developed and field-tested two methods of Adaptive Protection systems utilizing synchrophasor data. One method detects conditions of system stress that can lead to unintended relay operation, and initiates a supervisory signal to modify relay response in real time to avoid false trips. The second method detects the possibility of false trips of impedance relays as stable system swings “encroach” on the relays’ impedance zones, and produces an early warning so that relay engineers can re-evaluate relay settings. In addition, real-time synchrophasor data produced by this project was used to develop advanced visualization techniques for display of synchrophasor data to utility operators and engineers

VSS : a VHDL synthesis system
This report describes a register transfer synthesis system that allows a designer to interact with the design process. The designer can modify the compiled design by changing the input description, selecting optimization and mapping strategies, or graphically changing the generated design schematic. The VHDL language is used for input and output descriptions. An intermediate representation which incorporates signal typing and component attributes simplifies compilation and facilitates design optimization. The compilation process consists of two phases. First, a design composed of generic components is synthesized from the input description. Second, this design is translated into components from a particular library by a mapper and optimized by a logic optimizer. Redesign to new technologies can be accomplished by changing only the component library
A Hierarchical Emotion Regulated Sensorimotor Model: Case Studies
Inspired by the hierarchical cognitive architecture and the perception-action
model (PAM), we propose that the internal status acts as a kind of
common-coding representation which affects, mediates and even regulates the
sensorimotor behaviours. These regulation can be depicted in the Bayesian
framework, that is why cognitive agents are able to generate behaviours with
subtle differences according to their emotion or recognize the emotion by
perception. A novel recurrent neural network called recurrent neural network
with parametric bias units (RNNPB) runs in three modes, constructing a
two-level emotion regulated learning model, was further applied to testify this

Security in Wireless Sensor Networks: Issues and Challenges
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is an emerging technology that shows great
promise for various futuristic applications both for mass public and military.
The sensing technology combined with processing power and wireless
communication makes it lucrative for being exploited in abundance in future.
The inclusion of wireless communication technology also incurs various types of
security threats. The intent of this paper is to investigate the security
related issues and challenges in wireless sensor networks. We identify the
security threats, review proposed security mechanisms for wireless sensor
networks. We also discuss the holistic view of security for ensuring layered

A Defence of Cartesian Materialism
One of the principal tasks Dennett sets himself in "Consciousness Explained" is to demolish the Cartesian theatre model of phenomenal consciousness, which in its contemporary garb takes the form of Cartesian materialism: the idea that conscious experience is a process of presentation realized in the physical materials of the brain. The now standard response to Dennett is that, in focusing on Cartesian materialism, he attacks an impossibly naive account of consciousness held by no one currently working in cognitive science or the philosophy of mind. Our response is quite different. We believe that, once properly formulated, Cartesian materialism is no straw man. Rather, it is an attractive hypothesis about the relationship between the computational architecture of the brain and phenomenal consciousness, and hence one that is worthy of further exploration. Consequently, our primary aim in this paper is to defend Cartesian materialism from Dennett's assault. We do this by showing that Dennett's argument against this position is founded on an implicit assumption (about the relationship between phenomenal experience and information coding in the brain), which while valid in the context of classical cognitive science, is not forced on connectionism
Method for Storing and Retrieving Sequential Information
A method and design is provided for distributing and storing sets of temporally ordered information in a systematic and sequential fashion. This method is based on a model of how the brain functions in the distribution and storage of temporally ordered memories, but it can also be applied to the design of new biological, electronic or optical devices. These devices may be used in the testing and development of new therapeutic drugs, in the detection of toxic agents or impaired performance, or in the development of new industrial and consumer devices in which the orderly storage of sequential information is important

Behavioral synthesis from VHDL using structured modeling
This dissertation describes work in behavioral synthesis involving the development of a VHDL Synthesis System VSS which accepts a VHDL behavioral input specification and performs technology independent synthesis to generate a circuit netlist of generic components. The VHDL language is used for input and output descriptions. An intermediate representation which incorporates signal typing and component attributes simplifies compilation and facilitates design optimization.A Structured Modeling methodology has been developed to suggest standard VHDL modeling practices for synthesis. Structured modeling provides recommendations for the use of available VHDL description styles so that optimal designs will be synthesized.A design composed of generic components is synthesized from the input description through a process of Graph Compilation, Graph Criticism, and Design Compilation. Experiments were performed to demonstrate the effects of different modeling styles on the quality of the design produced by VSS. Several alternative VHDL models were examined for each benchmark, illustrating the improvements in design quality achieved when Structured Modeling guidelines were followed
A Perspective on Future Research Directions in Information Theory
Information theory is rapidly approaching its 70th birthday. What are
promising future directions for research in information theory? Where will
information theory be having the most impact in 10-20 years? What new and
emerging areas are ripe for the most impact, of the sort that information
theory has had on the telecommunications industry over the last 60 years? How
should the IEEE Information Theory Society promote high-risk new research
directions and broaden the reach of information theory, while continuing to be
true to its ideals and insisting on the intellectual rigor that makes its
breakthroughs so powerful? These are some of the questions that an ad hoc
committee (composed of the present authors) explored over the past two years.
We have discussed and debated these questions, and solicited detailed inputs
from experts in fields including genomics, biology, economics, and
neuroscience. This report is the result of these discussions
