    Diagonal Based Feature Extraction for Handwritten Alphabets Recognition System using Neural Network

    An off-line handwritten alphabetical character recognition system using multilayer feed forward neural network is described in the paper. A new method, called, diagonal based feature extraction is introduced for extracting the features of the handwritten alphabets. Fifty data sets, each containing 26 alphabets written by various people, are used for training the neural network and 570 different handwritten alphabetical characters are used for testing. The proposed recognition system performs quite well yielding higher levels of recognition accuracy compared to the systems employing the conventional horizontal and vertical methods of feature extraction. This system will be suitable for converting handwritten documents into structural text form and recognizing handwritten names

    Spectral Graph-based Features for Recognition of Handwritten Characters: A Case Study on Handwritten Devanagari Numerals

    Interpretation of different writing styles, unconstrained cursiveness and relationship between different primitive parts is an essential and challenging task for recognition of handwritten characters. As feature representation is inadequate, appropriate interpretation/description of handwritten characters seems to be a challenging task. Although existing research in handwritten characters is extensive, it still remains a challenge to get the effective representation of characters in feature space. In this paper, we make an attempt to circumvent these problems by proposing an approach that exploits the robust graph representation and spectral graph embedding concept to characterise and effectively represent handwritten characters, taking into account writing styles, cursiveness and relationships. For corroboration of the efficacy of the proposed method, extensive experiments were carried out on the standard handwritten numeral Computer Vision Pattern Recognition, Unit of Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata dataset. The experimental results demonstrate promising findings, which can be used in future studies.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure

    Offline Handwritten Kannada Numerals Recognition

    Handwritten Character Recognition (HCR) is one of the essential aspect in academic and production fields. The recognition system can be either online or offline. There is a large scope for character recognition on hand written papers. India is a multilingual and multi script country, where eighteen official scripts are accepted and have over hundred regional languages. Recognition of unconstrained hand written Indian scripts is difficult because of the presence of numerals, vowels, consonants, vowel modifiers and compound characters. In this paper, recognition of handwritten Kannada numeral characters is implemented and the different Wavelet features are used as feature extraction in this paper. The zonal densities of different region of an image have been extracted in the database. The database consists of 50 samples of each Kannada numeral character. For classification, the K-Nearest Neighbor method is used. Recognition accuracy of 88% has been achieved

    The potential uses of cursive optical character recognition, commonly known as OCR, in a number of industries, particularly document digitization, archiving, even language preservation, have attracted a lot of interest lately. In the framework of optical character recognition (OCR), the goal of this research is to provide a thorough understanding of both cutting-edge methods and the unique difficulties presented by Indic scripts. A thorough literature search was conducted in order to conduct this study, during which time relevant publications, conference proceedings, and scientific files were looked for up to the year 2023. As a consequence of the inclusion criteria that were developed to concentrate on studies only addressing Handwritten OCR on Indic scripts, 53 research publications were chosen as the process's outcome. The review provides a thorough analysis of the methodology and approaches employed in the chosen study. Deep neural networks, conventional feature-based methods, machine learning techniques, and hybrid systems have all been investigated as viable answers to the problem of effectively deciphering Indian scripts, because they are famously challenging to write. To operate, these systems require pre-processing techniques, segmentation schemes, and language models. The outcomes of this methodical examination demonstrate that despite the fact that Hand Scanning for Indic script has advanced significantly, room still exists for advancement. Future research could focus on developing trustworthy models that can handle a range of writing styles and enhance accuracy using less-studied Indic scripts.     Off-line Thai handwriting recognition in legal amount

    Thai handwriting in legal amounts is a challenging problem and a new field in the area of handwriting recognition research. The focus of this thesis is to implement Thai handwriting recognition system. A preliminary data set of Thai handwriting in legal amounts is designed. The samples in the data set are characters and words of the Thai legal amounts and a set of legal amounts phrases collected from a number of native Thai volunteers. At the preprocessing and recognition process, techniques are introduced to improve the characters recognition rates. The characters are divided into two smaller subgroups by their writing levels named body and high groups. The recognition rates of both groups are increased based on their distinguished features. The writing level separation algorithms are implemented using the size and position of characters. Empirical experiments are set to test the best combination of the feature to increase the recognition rates. Traditional recognition systems are modified to give the accumulative top-3 ranked answers to cover the possible character classes. At the postprocessing process level, the lexicon matching algorithms are implemented to match the ranked characters with the legal amount words. These matched words are joined together to form possible choices of amounts. These amounts will have their syntax checked in the last stage. Several syntax violations are caused by consequence faulty character segmentation and recognition resulting from connecting or broken characters. The anomaly in handwriting caused by these characters are mainly detected by their size and shape. During the recovery process, the possible word boundary patterns can be pre-defined and used to segment the hypothesis words. These words are identified by the word recognition and the results are joined with previously matched words to form the full amounts and checked by the syntax rules again. From 154 amounts written by 10 writers, the rejection rate is 14.9 percent with the recovery processes. The recognition rate for the accepted amount is 100 percent

    Development of a Feature Extraction Technique for Online Character Recognition System

    Character recognition has been a popular research area for many years because of its various application potentials. Some of its application areas are postal automation, bank cheque processing, automatic data entry, signature verification and so on. Nevertheless, recognition of handwritten characters is a problem that is currently gathering a lot of attention. It has become a difficult problem because of the high variability and ambiguity in the character shapes written by individuals. A lot of researchers have proposed many approaches to solve this complex problem but none has been able to solve the problem completely in all settings. Some of the problems encountered by researchers include selection of efficient feature extraction method, long network training time, long recognition time and low recognition accuracy. This paper developed a feature extraction technique for online character recognition system using hybrid of geometrical and statistical features. Thus, through the integration of geometrical and statistical features, insights were gained into new character properties, since these types of features were considered to be complementary.
