The transformative qualities of music and painting are inspirational. The collaborative voices of artistes from different disciplines and backgrounds transcend geographic and cultural distances enabling transcultural creativities as an outcome of interdisciplinary research-practice. This interdisciplinary project represents a unique collaborative effort between a composer and an artist in creating, visualizing and translating sound. It extrapolates the process and product of sonic design in response to a set of watercolor paintings drawn by Turkish painter and academic, Ayse Guler who was inspired by the music of Valerie Ross. The striking visual and interpretation of sound through Zen philosophy, a/r/tography and novel watercolour painting techniques adopted in the paintings have triggered a musical response from the composer who in-turn transmogrified the paintings back into music. The composer aimed to (re)interpret and translate the colours, shapes and emotions of the paintings as sonic realms in the performative world where sound-forms, sights and senses meld into a smorgasbord of artistic communication through a new electroacoustic piece entitled ‘Sixty-Three Dimensions’

Objectives of the study are to determine the effect of teaching based on multiple intelligence theory (TBMIT) in visual arts class on student success and permanence. Experimental design is used in the study. Study group is composed of students at 8th grade in 2012-2013 educational term at Atatürk Secondary School in Iğdır city centre. Experimental and control groups are made up of 32 and 31 students, respectively. In control group, conventional teaching method was used for expressing the subject of “miniature picture” in visual arts class while in experimental group a teaching method based on multiple intelligence theory (MIT) was applied for 3 weeks in both groups. Success test developed by the researchers was applied to measure success readily after and permanence of the knowledge learned 3 weeks after the experiment. In the comparison of the results obtained from Success and Permanence tests of experiment and control groups, t test was used by considering the statistical analyses of data obtained. It was found form the results that experimental group is more successful than control on the average. According to P test results, experimental group had larger P scores than the control. As a conclusion, MIT was found to affect Success and Permanence of 8th grade students in miniature picture subject in visual arts class

Small Business Set-asides in Procurement Auctions: An Empirical Analysis

    Get PDF
As part of public procurement, many governments adopt small business programs to pro- vide contract opportunities for businesses often with preferences for firms operated by mem- bers of groups designated as disadvantaged. The redistribution arising from such programs, however, can introduce significant added costs to government procurement budgets. In this paper, the extent to which small business set-asides increase government procurement costs is examined. The estimates employ data on Japanese public construction projects, where approximately half of the procurement budget is set aside for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Applying a positive relationship between profitability and firm size obtained by the non-parametric estimation of asymmetric first-price auctions with affiliated private values, a counterfactual simulation is undertaken to demonstrate that approximately 40 percent of SMEs would exit the procurement market if set-asides were to be removed. Surprisingly, the resulting lack of competition would increase government procurement costs more than it would offset the production cost inefficiency.

Verbal and Visual Texts of the Rāma Narrative

This article examines what we mean by a text: is it verbal (whether written or oral), mental, visual, or a combination? All of these forms are found within the various types of artistic expression centred on the Rāmāyaṇa tradition. I start with the relief sculptures, some of which are centuries early than any extant manuscripts. After a brief comment on the evolution of the Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa text, I then survey in turn some prestige illustrated Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa manuscripts, less notable Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa manuscripts, illustrated manuscripts of the Rāmcaritmānas and other vernacular versions, and sets or series of paintings illustrating the Rāma story (including some single paintings), showing the diverse range of forms it has taken over time and something of the adaptations it has undergone

ISO/TS 16949: analysis of the diffusion and current trends

The automotive industry has always shown a particular interest toward quality management systems, which resulted in the development of several different specific standards. As a result of this, by the mid-1980s, automotive suppliers were subject to numerous national and customer specific regulations. The proliferation of these standards and the need to create a single reference model led to Technical Specification (TS) 16949, an ISO technical specification aimed at representing a comprehensive quality management system for the global automotive industry. Since its early introduction, TS 16949 has encountered a certain success thanks to its feature of unifying and harmonizing the already existing standards. This paper studies the global evolution and diffusion of this technical specification, observing its impact on the local economies. The argument is supported by many empirical data

PSMA-PET based radiotherapy: a review of initial experiences, survey on current practice and future perspectives

    Get PDF
Gallium prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) ligand positron emission tomography (PET) is an increasingly used imaging modality in prostate cancer, especially in cases of tumor recurrence after curative intended therapy. Owed to the novelty of the PSMA-targeting tracers, clinical evidence on the value of PSMA-PET is moderate but rapidly increasing. State of the art imaging is pivotal for radiotherapy treatment planning as it may affect dose prescription, target delineation and use of concomitant therapy. This review summarizes the evidence on PSMA-PET imaging from a radiation oncologist’s point of view. Additionally a short survey containing twelve examples of patients and 6 additional questions was performed in seven mayor academic centers with experience in PSMA ligand imaging and the findings are reported here
