Green computing is all about using computers in a smarter and eco-friendly way. It is the environmentally responsible use of computers and related resources which includes the implementation of energy-efficient central processing units, servers and peripherals as well as reduced resource consumption and proper disposal of electronic waste .Computers certainly make up a large part of many people lives and traditionally are extremely damaging to the environment. Manufacturers of computer and its parts have been espousing the green cause to help protect environment from computers and electronic waste in any way.Research continues into key areas such as making the use of computers as energy-efficient as Possible, and designing algorithms and systems for efficiency-related computer technologies

The cost of virtue : reward as well as feedback are required to reduce user ICT power consumption

This work was partly supported by the IU-AC project, funded by grant EP/J016756/1 from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).We show that students in a school lab environment will change their behaviour to be more energy efficient, when appropriate incentives are in place, and when measurement-based, real-time feedback about their energy usage is provided. Rewards incentivise `non-green' users to be `green' as well as encouraging those users who already claim to be `green'. Measurement-based feedback improves user energy awareness and helps users to explore and adjust their use of computers to become `greener', but is not sufficient by itself. In our measurements, weekly mean group energy use as a whole reduced by up to 16%; and weekly individual user energy consumption reduced by up to 56% during active use. The findings are drawn from our longitudinal study that involved 83 Computer Science students; lasted 48 weeks across 2 academic years; monitored a total of 26778 hours of active computer use; collected approximately 2TB of raw data.Publisher PD

Green and Sustainability in Software Development Lifecycle Process

This chapter gives an insight of GREENSOFT Model for sustainable software engineering. In today’s world, computing devices are extensively by all for many purposes. They consume lots of energy even though they reduce energy consumption. Computers are used extensively while developing software. Existing software engineering models do not pay much attention to green computing that focuses on the effective use of natural resources. Sustainability of resources is the key. The GREENSOFT model of software engineering proposes a methodology in which Green IT practices are used, which will reduce the energy consumption of computers while developing software

Cognitive dimensions of talim: evaluating weaving notation through cognitive dimensions (CDs) framework

    Get PDF
The design process in Kashmiri carpet weaving is distributed over a number of actors and artifacts and is mediated by a weaving notation called talim. The script encodes entire design in practice-specific symbols. This encoded script is decoded and interpreted via design-specific conventions by weavers to weave the design embedded in it. The cognitive properties of this notational system are described in the paper employing cognitive dimensions (CDs) framework of Green (People and computers, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1989) and Blackwell et al. (Cognitive technology: instruments of mind—CT 2001, LNAI 2117, Springer, Berlin, 2001). After introduction to the practice, the design process is described in ‘The design process’ section which includes coding and decoding of talim. In ‘Cognitive dimensions of talim’ section, after briefly discussing CDs framework, the specific cognitive dimensions possessed by talim are described in detail

    Greening information management: final report

As the recent JISC report on ‘the ‘greening’ of ICT in education [1] highlights, the increasing reliance on ICT to underpin the business functions of higher education institutions has a heavy environmental impact, due mainly to the consumption of electricity to run computers and to cool data centres. While work is already under way to investigate how more energy efficient ICT can be introduced, to date there has been much less focus on the potential environmental benefits to be accrued from reducing the demand ‘at source’ through better data and information management. JISC thus commissioned the University of Strathclyde to undertake a study to gather evidence that establishes the efficacy of using information management options as components of Green ICT strategies within UK Higher Education environments, and to highlight existing practices which have the potential for wider replication

A Review on Eco-Friendly Technology Green Computing: Latest Practice in a Global Era

InModern era of globalization computers plays vital role in every field. They are a part of our life, so use of computers are increased day by day to fulfill our need. A large amount of electricity required for manufacturing of computer peripheral unit, such as CPU, Memory Unit, Monitor and functional unit etc. By this a large amount of carbon content is harmful to environment. These carbon contents directly or indirectly dangerous to human being and to the earth. There are many technique used by intelligent people to overcome this problem, one of that technique is “Green computingâ€.Green Computing is the emerging technology which takes responsibility of eco-friendly use of computer and their resources. In recent years, companies in the computer industry, manufacturer or vendors have come to realize that going green is the best solution, manufacturing the energy efficient computing resources, green use,in these terms of public relations and reduced costs. In today’s world the e-waste the major issue, green technology is the application of one or more of environmental science, green chemistry, environmental monitoring and electronic devices to monitor, model and conserve the natural environment and resources, and to keep under control the negative impacts of human involvement. The main focus of this paper is to save the energy, reduce the carbon foot prints, increase the paperless work, encouraging the recyclability of digital devices, reducing the use of dangerous material, reuse the old computer devices and make environment green by providing some new ideas or techniques

Review on Green computing to save environment and power management

Computers are used everywhere in human life hence computer consumes more electricity.Toxic, carbon dioxide produce by computer material. But use of computer is necessary in human life. Existence of Green Computing to overcome negative effect of computer to environment.Green computer solves  the problem of power consumption of computer system. It also provides technique to minimize pollution by computer material. Moreover, thousands of computing devices are manufactured every day and the same amount of old computers is being thrown away loading up the e-wastes. So it is highly important to manage these computing devices in such a way that they last longer and even if they are disposed of, they shouldn’t cause much harm to the nature. Green computing can take many forms in itself. Green technology focuses on reducing the environmental impact of industrial processes and innovative technologies caused by Earths growing population It has taken upon itself the goal to provide society’s needs in ways that do not damage or reduce natural resources. It is mainly used to protect environment, optimize energy consumption and keeps Green environment. The main goal of green computing is that increasing energy efficiency and reducing the use of harmful materials. Green computing ultimately focuses on ways in reducing overall environmental impacts. It require the integration of Green computing Practices such as recycling, electronic waste removal power consumption, virtualization, improving cooling technology, and optimization of the requirements. The major power consumption components are processors and the main memory in the servers. This paper gives idea of saving energy & environment which helps to save money
