    Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search and Variable Neighbourhood Search for the minimum labelling spanning tree problem

    This paper studies heuristics for the minimum labelling spanning tree (MLST) problem. The purpose is to find a spanning tree using edges that are as similar as possible. Given an undirected labelled connected graph, the minimum labelling spanning tree problem seeks a spanning tree whose edges have the smallest number of distinct labels. This problem has been shown to be NP-hard. A Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) and a Variable Neighbourhood Search (VNS) are proposed in this paper. They are compared with other algorithms recommended in the literature: the Modified Genetic Algorithm and the Pilot Method. Nonparametric statistical tests show that the heuristics based on GRASP and VNS outperform the other algorithms tested. Furthermore, a comparison with the results provided by an exact approach shows that we may quickly obtain optimal or near-optimal solutions with the proposed heuristics

    Constructive Heuristics for the Minimum Labelling Spanning Tree Problem: a preliminary comparison

    This report studies constructive heuristics for the minimum labelling spanning tree (MLST) problem. The purpose is to find a spanning tree that uses edges that are as similar as possible. Given an undirected labeled connected graph (i.e., with a label or color for each edge), the minimum labeling spanning tree problem seeks a spanning tree whose edges have the smallest possible number of distinct labels. The model can represent many real-world problems in telecommunication networks, electric networks, and multimodal transportation networks, among others, and the problem has been shown to be NP-complete even for complete graphs. A primary heuristic, named the maximum vertex covering algorithm has been proposed. Several versions of this constructive heuristic have been proposed to improve its efficiency. Here we describe the problem, review the literature and compare some variants of this algorithm

    The development and application of metaheuristics for problems in graph theory: A computational study

    This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.It is known that graph theoretic models have extensive application to real-life discrete optimization problems. Many of these models are NP-hard and, as a result, exact methods may be impractical for large scale problem instances. Consequently, there is a great interest in developing e±cient approximate methods that yield near-optimal solutions in acceptable computational times. A class of such methods, known as metaheuristics, have been proposed with success. This thesis considers some recently proposed NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems formulated on graphs. In particular, the min- imum labelling spanning tree problem, the minimum labelling Steiner tree problem, and the minimum quartet tree cost problem, are inves- tigated. Several metaheuristics are proposed for each problem, from classical approximation algorithms to novel approaches. A compre- hensive computational investigation in which the proposed methods are compared with other algorithms recommended in the literature is reported. The results show that the proposed metaheuristics outper- form the algorithms recommended in the literature, obtaining optimal or near-optimal solutions in short computational running times. In addition, a thorough analysis of the implementation of these methods provide insights for the implementation of metaheuristic strategies for other graph theoretic problems

    Low Cost Quality of Service Multicast Routing in High Speed Networks

    Many of the services envisaged for high speed networks, such as B-ISDN/ATM, will support real-time applications with large numbers of users. Examples of these types of application range from those used by closed groups, such as private video meetings or conferences, where all participants must be known to the sender, to applications used by open groups, such as video lectures, where partcipants need not be known by the sender. These types of application will require high volumes of network resources in addition to the real-time delay constraints on data delivery. For these reasons, several multicast routing heuristics have been proposed to support both interactive and distribution multimedia services, in high speed networks. The objective of such heuristics is to minimise the multicast tree cost while maintaining a real-time bound on delay. Previous evaluation work has compared the relative average performance of some of these heuristics and concludes that they are generally efficient, although some perform better for small multicast groups and others perform better for larger groups. Firstly, we present a detailed analysis and evaluation of some of these heuristics which illustrates that in some situations their average performance is reversed; a heuristic that in general produces efficient solutions for small multicasts may sometimes produce a more efficient solution for a particular large multicast, in a specific network. Also, in a limited number of cases using Dijkstra's algorithm produces the best result. We conclude that the efficiency of a heuristic solution depends on the topology of both the network and the multicast, and that it is difficult to predict. Because of this unpredictability we propose the integration of two heuristics with Dijkstra's shortest path tree algorithm to produce a hybrid that consistently generates efficient multicast solutions for all possible multicast groups in any network. These heuristics are based on Dijkstra's algorithm which maintains acceptable time complexity for the hybrid, and they rarely produce inefficient solutions for the same network/multicast. The resulting performance attained is generally good and in the rare worst cases is that of the shortest path tree. The performance of our hybrid is supported by our evaluation results. Secondly, we examine the stability of multicast trees where multicast group membership is dynamic. We conclude that, in general, the more efficient the solution of a heuristic is, the less stable the multicast tree will be as multicast group membership changes. For this reason, while the hybrid solution we propose might be suitable for use with closed user group multicasts, which are likely to be stable, we need a different approach for open user group multicasting, where group membership may be highly volatile. We propose an extension to an existing heuristic that ensures multicast tree stability where multicast group membership is dynamic. Although this extension decreases the efficiency of the heuristics solutions, its performance is significantly better than that of the worst case, a shortest path tree. Finally, we consider how we might apply the hybrid and the extended heuristic in current and future multicast routing protocols for the Internet and for ATM Networks.

    Performance Analysis of Evolutionary Algorithms for the Minimum Label Spanning Tree Problem

    Some experimental investigations have shown that evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are efficient for the minimum label spanning tree (MLST) problem. However, we know little about that in theory. As one step towards this issue, we theoretically analyze the performances of the (1+1) EA, a simple version of EAs, and a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm called GSEMO on the MLST problem. We reveal that for the MLSTb_{b} problem the (1+1) EA and GSEMO achieve a b+12\frac{b+1}{2}-approximation ratio in expected polynomial times of nn the number of nodes and kk the number of labels. We also show that GSEMO achieves a (2ln(n))(2ln(n))-approximation ratio for the MLST problem in expected polynomial time of nn and kk. At the same time, we show that the (1+1) EA and GSEMO outperform local search algorithms on three instances of the MLST problem. We also construct an instance on which GSEMO outperforms the (1+1) EA

    Analysis of an iterated greedy heuristic for vertex clique covering

    The aim of the vertex clique covering problem (CCP) is to cover the vertices of a graph with as few cliques as possible. We analyse the iterated greedy (IG) algorithm for CCP, which was previously shown to provide strong empirical results for real-world networks. It is demonstrated how the techniques of analysis for randomised search heuristics can be applied to IG, and several practically relevant results are obtained. We show that for triangle-free graphs, IG solves CCP optimally in expected polynomial time. Secondly, we show that IG finds the optimum for CCP in a specific case of sparse random graphs in expected polynomial time with high probability. For Baraba´si-Albert model of scale-free networks, which is a canonical model explaining the growth of social, biological or computer networks, we obtain that IG obtains an asymptotically optimal approximation in polynomial time in expectation. Last but not least, we propose a slightly modified variant of IG, which guarantees expected polynomial-time convergence to the optimum for graphs with non-overlapping triangles
