    Goal-based trajectory analysis for unusual behaviour detection in intelligent surveillance

    Video surveillance systems are playing an increasing role in preventing and investigating crime, protecting public safety, and safeguarding national security. In a typical surveillance installation, a human operator has to constantly monitor a large array of video feeds for suspicious behaviour. As the number of cameras increases, information overload makes manual surveillance increasingly difficult, adding to other confounding factors like human fatigue and boredom. The objective of an intelligent vision-based surveillance system is to automate the monitoring and event detection components of surveillance, alerting the operator only when unusual behaviour or other events of interest are detected. While most traditional methods for trajectory-based unusual behaviour detection rely on low-level trajectory features, this thesis improves a recently introduced approach that makes use of higher-level features of intentionality. Individuals in a scene are modelled as intentional agents instead of simply objects. Unusual behaviour detection then becomes a task of determining whether an agent's trajectory is explicable in terms of learned spatial goals. The proposed method extends the original goal-based approach in three ways: first, the spatial scene structure is learned in a training phase; second, a region transition model is learned to describe normal movement patterns between spatial regions; and third, classification of trajectories in progress is performed in a probabilistic framework using particle filtering. Experimental validation on three published third-party datasets demonstrates the validity of the proposed approach

    Video surveillance always had a negative connotation, among others because of the loss of privacy and because it may not automatically increase public safety. If it was able to detect atypical (i.e. dangerous) situations in real time, autonomously and anonymously, this could change. A prerequisite for this is a reliable automatic detection of possibly dangerous situations from video data. This is done classically by object extraction and tracking. From the derived trajectories, we then want to determine dangerous situations by detecting atypical trajectories. However, due to ethical considerations it is better to develop such a system on data without people being threatened or even harmed, plus with having them know that there is such a tracking system installed. Another important point is that these situations do not occur very often in real, public CCTV areas and may be captured properly even less. In the artistic project leave a trace the tracked objects, people in an atrium of a institutional building, become actor and thus part of the installation. Visualisation in real-time allows interaction by these actors, which in turn creates many atypical interaction situations on which we can develop our situation detection. The data set has evolved over three years and hence, is huge. In this article we describe the tracking system and several approaches for the detection of atypical trajectories

    Human behavioural analysis with self-organizing map for ambient assisted living

    This paper presents a system for automatically classifying the resting location of a moving object in an indoor environment. The system uses an unsupervised neural network (Self Organising Feature Map) fully implemented on a low-cost, low-power automated home-based surveillance system, capable of monitoring activity level of elders living alone independently. The proposed system runs on an embedded platform with a specialised ceiling-mounted video sensor for intelligent activity monitoring. The system has the ability to learn resting locations, to measure overall activity levels and to detect specific events such as potential falls. First order motion information, including first order moving average smoothing, is generated from the 2D image coordinates (trajectories). A novel edge-based object detection algorithm capable of running at a reasonable speed on the embedded platform has been developed. The classification is dynamic and achieved in real-time. The dynamic classifier is achieved using a SOFM and a probabilistic model. Experimental results show less than 20% classification error, showing the robustness of our approach over others in literature with minimal power consumption. The head location of the subject is also estimated by a novel approach capable of running on any resource limited platform with power constraints

    Learning Deep Representations of Appearance and Motion for Anomalous Event Detection

    We present a novel unsupervised deep learning framework for anomalous event detection in complex video scenes. While most existing works merely use hand-crafted appearance and motion features, we propose Appearance and Motion DeepNet (AMDN) which utilizes deep neural networks to automatically learn feature representations. To exploit the complementary information of both appearance and motion patterns, we introduce a novel double fusion framework, combining both the benefits of traditional early fusion and late fusion strategies. Specifically, stacked denoising autoencoders are proposed to separately learn both appearance and motion features as well as a joint representation (early fusion). Based on the learned representations, multiple one-class SVM models are used to predict the anomaly scores of each input, which are then integrated with a late fusion strategy for final anomaly detection. We evaluate the proposed method on two publicly available video surveillance datasets, showing competitive performance with respect to state of the art approaches.Comment: Oral paper in BMVC 201

    Geovisual Analytics Environment for Supporting the Resilience of Maritime Surveillance System

    International audienceThis paper presents an original approach for supporting the resilience in Maritime Domain Awareness, based on geovisual analytics. While many research projects focus on developing rules for detecting anomalies at by automated means, there is no support to visual exploration led by human operators. We investigate the use of visual methods for analyzing mobility data of ships. Behaviors of interest can be known (modeled) or unknown, asking for various ways of visualizing and studying the information. We assume that supporting the use of geovisual analytics will make the exploration and the analysis process easier, reducing the cognitive load of the tasks led by the actors of maritime surveillance. The detection and the identification of threats at sea are improved by using adequate visualization methods, regarding the context of use.     A semantic autonomous video surveillance system for dense camera networks in smart cities

    Producción CientíficaThis paper presents a proposal of an intelligent video surveillance system able to detect and identify abnormal and alarming situations by analyzing object movement. The system is designed to minimize video processing and transmission, thus allowing a large number of cameras to be deployed on the system, and therefore making it suitable for its usage as an integrated safety and security solution in Smart Cities. Alarm detection is performed on the basis of parameters of the moving objects and their trajectories, and is performed using semantic reasoning and ontologies. This means that the system employs a high-level conceptual language easy to understand for human operators, capable of raising enriched alarms with descriptions of what is happening on the image, and to automate reactions to them such as alerting the appropriate emergency services using the Smart City safety network

Nevertheless, most surveillance systems today provide only a passive form of site monitoring. Extensive video records may be kept to help find the instigator of criminal activities after the crime has been committed but preventive measures usually require human involvement. In addition to this, there is a need for a large amounts of data storage to keep up to several terabytes of video streams that may be needed for later analysis
