    Internames: a name-to-name principle for the future Internet

    We propose Internames, an architectural framework in which names are used to identify all entities involved in communication: contents, users, devices, logical as well as physical points involved in the communication, and services. By not having a static binding between the name of a communication entity and its current location, we allow entities to be mobile, enable them to be reached by any of a number of basic communication primitives, enable communication to span networks with different technologies and allow for disconnected operation. Furthermore, with the ability to communicate between names, the communication path can be dynamically bound to any of a number of end-points, and the end-points themselves could change as needed. A key benefit of our architecture is its ability to accommodate gradual migration from the current IP infrastructure to a future that may be a ubiquitous Information Centric Network. Basic building blocks of Internames are: i) a name-based Application Programming Interface; ii) a separation of identifiers (names) and locators; iii) a powerful Name Resolution Service (NRS) that dynamically maps names to locators, as a function of time/location/context/service; iv) a built-in capacity of evolution, allowing a transparent migration from current networks and the ability to include as particular cases current specific architectures. To achieve this vision, shared by many other researchers, we exploit and expand on Information Centric Networking principles, extending ICN functionality beyond content retrieval, easing send-to-name and push services, and allowing to use names also to route data in the return path. A key role in this architecture is played by the NRS, which allows for the co-existence of multiple network "realms", including current IP and non-IP networks, glued together by a name-to-name overarching communication primitive.Comment: 6 page

    Maintaining consistency in client-server database systems with client-side caching

    PhD ThesisCaching has been used in client-server database systems to improve the performance of applications. Much of the current work has concentrated on caching techniques at the server side, since the underlying assumption has been that clients are “thin” with application level processing taking place mainly at the server side. There are also a new class of “thick client” applications where clients need to access the database at the server but also perform substantial amount of processing at the client side; here client-side caching is needed to provide good performance for applications. This thesis presents a transactional cache consistency scheme suitable for systems with client-side caching. The scheme is based on the optimistic approach to concurrency control. The scheme provides serializability for committed transactions. This is in contrast to many modern systems that only provide the snapshot isolation property which is weaker than serializability. A novel feature is that the processing load for validating transactions at commit time is shared between clients and the database server, thereby reducing the load at the server. Read-only transactions can be validated at the client-side, without communicating with the server. Another feature is that the scheme permits disconnected operation, allowing clients with cached objects to work offline. The performance of the scheme is evaluated using simulation experiments. The experiments demonstrate that for mostly read only transaction load – for which caching is most effective - the scheme outperforms the existing concurrency control scheme with client-side caching considered to be the best, and matches the performance of the widely used scheme that only provides snapshot isolation.     Understanding the use of web technologies for aplications in open display networks

    Open display networks represent a new paradigm for large scale networks of public displays that are open to applications and content from third party sources. Web technologies may be particularly interesting as a technological framework for third party application development in open display networks because of their portability and widespread use. However, there are also significant challenges involved that result from the specificities of this particular usage domain. In this work, we identify and characterize some of those specificities and analyze their implications for the use of web technologies.
