Genetic and memetic algorithms for scheduling railway maintenance activities
Nowadays railway companies are confronted with high infrastructure maintenance costs. Therefore good strategies are needed to carry out these maintenance activities in a most cost effective way. In this paper we solve the preventive maintenance scheduling problem (PMSP) using genetic algorithms, memetic algorithms and a two-phase heuristic based on opportunities. The aim of the PMSP is to schedule the (short) routine activities and (long) unique projects for one link in the rail network for a certain planning period such that the overall cost is minimized. To reduce costs and inconvenience for the travellers and operators, these maintenance works are clustered as much as possible in the same time period. The performance of the algorithms presented in this paper are compared with the performance of the methods from an earlier work, Budai et al. Tabu search for ship routing and scheduling
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University, 20/12/2006.This thesis examines exact and heuristic approaches to solve the Ship Routing and Scheduling Problem (SRSP). The method was developed to address the problem of loading cargos for many customers using heterogeneous vessels. Constraints relate to delivery time windows imposed by customers, the time horizon by which all deliveries must be made and vessel capacities. The objective is to minimise the overall operation cost, where all customers are satisfied. Two types of routing and scheduling are considered, one called single-cargo problem, where only one cargo can be loaded into a ship, and the second type called multi-cargo problem, where multiple products can be carried on a ship to be delivered to different customers. The exact approach comprises two stages. In the first stage, a number of candidate feasible schedules is generated for each ship in the fleet. The second stage is to model the problem as a set partitioning problem (SPP) where the columns are the candidate feasible schedules obtained in the first stage. The heuristic approach uses Tabu Search (TS). Most of the TS operations, such as insert and swap moves, tenure, tabu list, intensification, and diversification are used. The results of a computational investigation are presented. Solution quality and execution time are explored with respect to problem size and parameters controlling the tabu search such as tenure and neighbourhood size. The results showed that the average of the solution gap between TS solution and SPP solution is up to 28% (for small problems) and up to 18% for large problems. However, obtaining an optimal solution requires a large amount of computer time to produce the solution compared to obtaining approximate solutions using the TS approach. The use of Tabu Search for SRSP is novel and the results indicate that it is viable approach for large problems
Train scheduling with application to the UK rail network
Nowadays, transforming the railway industry for better performance and making the best usage of the current capacity are the key issues in many countries. Operational research methods and in particular scheduling techniques have a substantial potential to offer algorithmic solutions to improve railway operation and control. This thesis looks at train scheduling and rescheduling problems in a microscopic level with regard to the track topology. All of the timetable components are fixed and we aim to minimize delay by considering a tardiness objective function and only allowing changes to the order and to the starting times of trains on blocks. Various operational and safety constraints should be considered. We have achieved further developments in the field including generalizations to the existing models in order to obtain a generic model that includes important additional constraints. We make use of the analogy between the train scheduling problem and job shop scheduling problem. The model is customized to the UK railway network and signaling system. Introduced solution methods are inspired by the successful results of the shifting bottleneck to solve the job shop scheduling problems. Several solution methods such as mathematical programming and different variants of the shifting bottleneck are investigated. The proposed methods are implemented on a real-world case study based on London Bridge area in the South East of the UK. It is a dense network of interconnected lines and complicated with regard to stations and junctions structure. Computational experiments show the efficiency and limitations of the mathematical programming model and one variant of the proposed shifting bottleneck algorithms. This study also addresses train routing and rerouting problems in a mesoscopic level regarding relaxing some of the detailed constraints. The aim is to make the best usage of routing options in the network to minimize delay propagation. In addition to train routes, train entry times and orders on track segment are defined. Hence, the routing and scheduling decisions are combined in the solutions arising from this problem. Train routing and rerouting problems are formulated as modified job shop problems to include the main safety and operational constraints. Novel shifting bottleneck algorithms are provided to solve the problem. Computational results are reported on the same case study based on London Bridge area and the results show the efficiency of one variant of the developed shifting bottleneck algorithms in terms of solution quality and runtime
Supply chain management: An opportunity for metaheuristics
In today’s highly competitive and global marketplace the pressure on organizations to find new ways to create and deliver value to customers grows ever stronger. In the last two decades, logistics and supply chain has moved to the center stage. There has been a growing recognition that it is through an effective management of the logistics function and the supply chain that the goal of cost reduction and service enhancement can be achieved. The key to success in Supply Chain Management (SCM) require heavy emphasis on integration of activities, cooperation, coordination and information sharing throughout the entire supply chain, from suppliers to customers. To be able to respond to the challenge of integration there is the need of sophisticated decision support systems based on powerful mathematical models and solution techniques, together with the advances in information and communication technologies. The industry and the academia have become increasingly interested in SCM to be able to respond to the problems and issues posed by the changes in the logistics and supply chain. We present a brief discussion on the important issues in SCM. We then argue that metaheuristics can play an important role in solving complex supply chain related problems derived by the importance of designing and managing the entire supply chain as a single entity. We will focus specially on the Iterated Local Search, Tabu Search and Scatter Search as the ones, but not limited to, with great potential to be used on solving the SCM related problems.
