    Fault-Tolerant Dot-Product Engines

Coding schemes are presented that provide the ability to correct and detect computational errors while using dot-product engines for integer vector--matrix multiplication. Both the L1L_1-metric and the Hamming metric are considered

Abstract: We investigate a Knuth-like scheme for balancing q-ary codewords, which has the virtue that look-up tables for coding and decoding the prefix are avoided by using precoding and error correction techniques. We show how the scheme can be extended to allow for error correction of single channel errors using a fast decoding algorithm that depends on syndromes only, making it considerably faster compared to the prior art exhaustive decoding strategy. A comparison between the new and prior art schemes, both in terms of redundancy and error performance, completes the study

This reference publication introduces forward error correcting (FEC) and stresses definitions and basic calculations for use by engineers. The seven chapters include 41 example problems, worked in detail to illustrate points. A glossary of terms is included, as well as an appendix on the Q function. Block and convolutional codes are covered
