    Explaining inequalities in vulnerable children’s digital skills : The effect of individual and social discrimination

    While the Internet is part of everyday life for many children, inequalities exist in their digital skills, with little known about the influence of perceived discrimination on these inequalities. Building on survey data collected from nationally representative samples of 10,820 children aged 12–16 in 14 European countries, we seek to understand whether and how disadvantaged children may fall behind their more advantaged peers across Europe with respect to digital skills, as well as the role played by perceived individual and social discrimination in acquiring these skills. The findings show that perceived individual and social discrimination affect the relationships of socio-cultural resources (age, gender, preference for online social interaction) and personal resources (self-efficacy) with digital skills. Therefore, even in countries where Internet use is an integral part of children’s lives, interventions should be made to prevent perceived offline discrimination translating into digital inequalities

    The Road to School. The Barcelona case

    Mobility of the young population between 6 and 10-year-old has been continuously decreasing the last decades causing problems of health (obesity) and decreasing the development of spatial skills along with the sense of community. The paper focuses on the road between school and home and deals with a specific project called “Camino Escolar” (School Road) which supports parents in the decision to authorize their children to go and walk alone. The empirical case is developed in Barcelona where 136 School Road projects exist but more precisely analyses two specific districts. The methodology is divided into two phases. In the first phase, we conduct an exploratory study based on interviews with the different stakeholders of the education system and conclude on a list of barriers against the development of the School Road project. In the second one, we ask for the parents to prioritize these barriers according to their grade of importance. The results show the different barriers can be classified into four clusters which are physical insecurities, emotional insecurities, the city infrastructure quality and the project management quality.     Maximizing opportunities and minimizing risks for children online: the role of digital skills in emerging strategies of parental mediation

    As internet use becomes widespread at home, parents are trying to maximize their children’s online opportunities while also minimizing online risks. We surveyed parents of 6- to 14-year-olds in eight European countries (N=6,400). A factor analysis revealed two strategies. Enabling mediation is associated with increased online opportunities but also risks. This strategy incorporates safety efforts, responds to child agency and is employed when parent or child is relatively digitally skilled, so may not support harm. Restrictive mediation is associated with fewer online risks but at the cost of opportunities, reflecting policy advice that regards media use as primarily problematic. It is favoured when parent or child digital skills are lower, potentially keeping vulnerable children safe yet undermining their digital inclusion

    Addressing the behavioral and contextual factors that put males, aged 15-18 at risk for exposure to sexually transmitted infections in Georgetown, Guyana

    PROBLEM STATEMENT: Globally, 70% of more than three million new curable sexually transmitted infections (STI) are among 15-24 year olds, with young people in developing countries bearing the highest burden. Chlamydia Trachomatis prevalence, for example, is 15.4% and 20.5% in young women and men attending STD clinics in the U.S. However, Caribbean STI data for young men are particularly scarce and inconsistent and cases are under-reported due to poor health seeking behavior. In Guyana, 42% of the STI cases from 2010 -2014 occurred in young people, aged 15- 24. Moreover, few programs and policies focus specifically on the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs of young men. This dissertation explores the contextual and behavioral factors that cause young men’s vulnerability to STI and proposes recommendations for the national response in Guyana. METHODS: Research methods included: 9 focus group discussions (FGDs) with young men, aged 15-18, mothers and fathers and 25 in-depth interviews with representatives from government, community, faith-based and donor organizations. Interviews and FGDs were audiotaped, transcribed, and analyzed for major themes among and across each stakeholder group. Analysis was guided by a socio-ecologic framework and resulted in program and policy recommendations to address vulnerability to STI and augment protective factors against STI in young men in Guyana. RESULTS: Salient overarching themes include: Poverty and Disenfranchisement “Yes, this is a Man”: Early Sex, Fast Money, and Risk”, “The Empty Room: Young Men without Male Roles Models”, “Sex in a violent society”, “Stigma, Discrimination, and Shame: Road blocks to young men’s sexual health” and Young men’s Sexual and Reproductive Health: Young men’s Sexual and Reproductive Health: It all depends on family, religion, education, music and media (or not). Participants highlighted a lack of SRH awareness and health care seeking resulting from insufficient male SRH promotion and services. Parental engagement, school attendance, supportive peers, religious commitment and internet use for SRH information were described as protective factors. CONTRIBUTION: A socio-ecological model helped to comprehensively identify and organize broad social determinants of SRH and high risk sexual behaviors for young men.     Investigation of Alcohol-Related Social Norms Among Youth Aged 14-17 Years in Perth, Western Australia: Protocol for a Respondent-Driven Sampling Study

    Introduction: Alcohol use among young people is a major public health concern in Australia and internationally. Research elucidating social norms influencing alcohol use supports the desire to conform to peers. However, there is a lack of evidence on how social norms are transmitted from the community to young people and between family members and peers, as previous studies are limited to mainly school and university environments. This article describes the proposed process to investigate common alcohol-related norms held by 14-year-olds to 17-year-olds in Perth, Western Australia, and to clarify the process and pathways through which proalcohol norms are transmitted to adolescents.Methods and analysis: This cross-sectional quantitative study will use respondent-driven sampling (RDS) to recruit a sample of 672 adolescents from sporting groups, youth programmes and the community in Perth. Data will be collected with a previously developed and validated multidimensional online survey instrument. A variety of strategies will be explored to aid participation including face-to-face recruitment and survey administration, web-based RDS and a ‘mature minor’ consent assessment protocol. Data analysis will include descriptive statistics of demographic characteristics, as well as social network and dyadic analyses, to explore the connections between shared understanding of norms and behaviours among individuals and how these translate into reported practices.Ethics and dissemination: This research is expected to extend our understanding of normative development pathways to inform future interventions, and will be widely disseminated through conference presentations, peer-reviewed papers, media channels and community seminars. A study reference group of key health industry stakeholders will be established to encourage integration of study findings into policy and practice, and results will guide the development of community interventions.     The relationship between health education and health compromising behaviour among South African adolescents attending an institution of tertiary education.

    Thesis (M.N.)-University of KwaZulu, Natal. 2006.In South Africa statistics of mortality and morbidity, pertaining to the consequences of risk taking behaviour among the country's youth, remain unacceptably high. Many of these behaviours have long as well as short term consequences, thereby, giving rise to many illnesses, lifestyle diseases, and other problems. The risk-taking activities confining this study include those that are known to concur and co-vary namely: unprotected, indiscriminate sex; nicotine use; alcohol and other drug/substance abuse; and unsafe travelling practices. The problem is that it is unknown whether South African adolescents are receiving health education that reduces risk-taking tendencies, and if they are, whether they are benefiting from the exposure. Little is known about the relationship between health-education and health-compromising behaviour in South Africa; nor the influence of other variables on this relationship. The purpose of the study was to describe and explore this relationship, among South African adolescents, attending an institution of tertiary education in the province of KwaZulu Natal. All aspects of the research were underpinned by Rosenstock's Health Belief Model (1974). The research was approached from a quantitative perspective using a descriptive/exploratory design. A sample of 155 students from all the main ethnic groups, of both sexes, aged between 17 and 24 years, who were raised and educated in South Africa, was taken from the Howard College Campus of the University of KwaZulu Natal.     Adaptation of the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) in Spanish

    The impact of social networks on people's daily lives is worrisome, particularly in adolescents and young people, who seem to exceed the limits of normal use. Constant excessive use can lead to pathological behaviors linked to social media addiction (SMA). Our objectives were to 1) adapt the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) to Spanish and 2) evaluate its psychometric properties in a young population. The BSMAS was adapted to Spanish, involving experts on social media addiction and people from the target population during the adaptation process. For the psychometric evaluation, 650 Peruvian college students responded to the Spanish version (53.5 % women aged 18 to 40, M = 21.5 SD = 2.7). The one-dimensional measurement model proposed for the original BSMAS was confirmed for our version (X2(9) = 23.9315, CFI = 0.994, TLI = 0.990, SRMR = 0.032, RMSEA = 0.061). The reliability was good (α = 0.863; 95 % CI: 0.848–0.870; ω = 0.864; 95 % CI: 0.846–0.844), and the measurement invariance was confirmed for sex and age by fitting models. The concurrent validity with external social media addiction and mental health indicators was also confirmed. This study provides new and relevant information on the BSMAS validity and allows its application to Spanish-speaker college students from Peru and similar countries
