    Finding Function in Form: Compositional Character Models for Open Vocabulary Word Representation

    We introduce a model for constructing vector representations of words by composing characters using bidirectional LSTMs. Relative to traditional word representation models that have independent vectors for each word type, our model requires only a single vector per character type and a fixed set of parameters for the compositional model. Despite the compactness of this model and, more importantly, the arbitrary nature of the form-function relationship in language, our "composed" word representations yield state-of-the-art results in language modeling and part-of-speech tagging. Benefits over traditional baselines are particularly pronounced in morphologically rich languages (e.g., Turkish)

    An Empirical Performance Evaluation of Semantic-Based Similarity Measures in Microblogging Social Media

    Measuring textual semantic similarity has been a subject of intense discussion in NLP and AI for many years. A new area of research has emerged that applies semantic similarity measures within Twitter. However, the development of these measures for the semantic analysis of tweets imposes fundamental challenges. The sparsity, ambiguity, and informality present in social media are hampering the performance of traditional textual similarity measures as “tweets”, have special syntactic and semantic characteristics. This paper reviews and evaluates the performance of topological, statistical, and hybrid similarity measures, in the context of Twitter analysis. Furthermore, the performance of each measure is compared against a naïve keyword-based similarity computation method to assess the significance of semantic computation in capturing the meaning in tweets. An experiment is designed and conducted to evaluate the different measures through examining various metrics, including correlation, error rates, and statistical tests on a benchmark dataset. The potential weaknesses of semantic similarity measures in relation to Twitter applications of textual similarity assessment and the research contributions are discussed. This research highlights challenges and potential improvement areas for the semantic similarity of tweets, a resource for researchers and practitioners

    Data-efficient methods for information extraction

    Strukturierte Wissensrepräsentationssysteme wie Wissensdatenbanken oder Wissensgraphen bieten Einblicke in Entitäten und Beziehungen zwischen diesen Entitäten in der realen Welt. Solche Wissensrepräsentationssysteme können in verschiedenen Anwendungen der natürlichen Sprachverarbeitung eingesetzt werden, z. B. bei der semantischen Suche, der Beantwortung von Fragen und der Textzusammenfassung. Es ist nicht praktikabel und ineffizient, diese Wissensrepräsentationssysteme manuell zu befüllen. In dieser Arbeit entwickeln wir Methoden, um automatisch benannte Entitäten und Beziehungen zwischen den Entitäten aus Klartext zu extrahieren. Unsere Methoden können daher verwendet werden, um entweder die bestehenden unvollständigen Wissensrepräsentationssysteme zu vervollständigen oder ein neues strukturiertes Wissensrepräsentationssystem von Grund auf zu erstellen. Im Gegensatz zu den gängigen überwachten Methoden zur Informationsextraktion konzentrieren sich unsere Methoden auf das Szenario mit wenigen Daten und erfordern keine große Menge an kommentierten Daten. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit haben wir uns auf das Problem der Erkennung von benannten Entitäten konzentriert. Wir haben an der gemeinsamen Aufgabe von Bacteria Biotope 2019 teilgenommen. Die gemeinsame Aufgabe besteht darin, biomedizinische Entitätserwähnungen zu erkennen und zu normalisieren. Unser linguistically informed Named-Entity-Recognition-System besteht aus einem Deep-Learning-basierten Modell, das sowohl verschachtelte als auch flache Entitäten extrahieren kann; unser Modell verwendet mehrere linguistische Merkmale und zusätzliche Trainingsziele, um effizientes Lernen in datenarmen Szenarien zu ermöglichen. Unser System zur Entitätsnormalisierung verwendet String-Match, Fuzzy-Suche und semantische Suche, um die extrahierten benannten Entitäten mit den biomedizinischen Datenbanken zu verknüpfen. Unser System zur Erkennung von benannten Entitäten und zur Entitätsnormalisierung erreichte die niedrigste Slot-Fehlerrate von 0,715 und belegte den ersten Platz in der gemeinsamen Aufgabe. Wir haben auch an zwei gemeinsamen Aufgaben teilgenommen: Adverse Drug Effect Span Detection (Englisch) und Profession Span Detection (Spanisch); beide Aufgaben sammeln Daten von der Social Media Plattform Twitter. Wir haben ein Named-Entity-Recognition-Modell entwickelt, das die Eingabedarstellung des Modells durch das Stapeln heterogener Einbettungen aus verschiedenen Domänen verbessern kann; unsere empirischen Ergebnisse zeigen komplementäres Lernen aus diesen heterogenen Einbettungen. Unser Beitrag belegte den 3. Platz in den beiden gemeinsamen Aufgaben. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit untersuchten wir Strategien zur Erweiterung synthetischer Daten, um ressourcenarme Informationsextraktion in spezialisierten Domänen zu ermöglichen. Insbesondere haben wir backtranslation an die Aufgabe der Erkennung von benannten Entitäten auf Token-Ebene und der Extraktion von Beziehungen auf Satzebene angepasst. Wir zeigen, dass die Rückübersetzung sprachlich vielfältige und grammatikalisch kohärente synthetische Sätze erzeugen kann und als wettbewerbsfähige Erweiterungsstrategie für die Aufgaben der Erkennung von benannten Entitäten und der Extraktion von Beziehungen dient. Bei den meisten realen Aufgaben zur Extraktion von Beziehungen stehen keine kommentierten Daten zur Verfügung, jedoch ist häufig ein großer unkommentierter Textkorpus vorhanden. Bootstrapping-Methoden zur Beziehungsextraktion können mit diesem großen Korpus arbeiten, da sie nur eine Handvoll Startinstanzen benötigen. Bootstrapping-Methoden neigen jedoch dazu, im Laufe der Zeit Rauschen zu akkumulieren (bekannt als semantische Drift), und dieses Phänomen hat einen drastischen negativen Einfluss auf die endgültige Genauigkeit der Extraktionen. Wir entwickeln zwei Methoden zur Einschränkung des Bootstrapping-Prozesses, um die semantische Drift bei der Extraktion von Beziehungen zu minimieren. Unsere Methoden nutzen die Graphentheorie und vortrainierte Sprachmodelle, um verrauschte Extraktionsmuster explizit zu identifizieren und zu entfernen. Wir berichten über die experimentellen Ergebnisse auf dem TACRED-Datensatz für vier Relationen. Im letzten Teil der Arbeit demonstrieren wir die Anwendung der Domänenanpassung auf die anspruchsvolle Aufgabe der mehrsprachigen Akronymextraktion. Unsere Experimente zeigen, dass die Domänenanpassung die Akronymextraktion in wissenschaftlichen und juristischen Bereichen in sechs Sprachen verbessern kann, darunter auch Sprachen mit geringen Ressourcen wie Persisch und Vietnamesisch.The structured knowledge representation systems such as knowledge base or knowledge graph can provide insights regarding entities and relationship(s) among these entities in the real-world, such knowledge representation systems can be employed in various natural language processing applications such as semantic search, question answering and text summarization. It is infeasible and inefficient to manually populate these knowledge representation systems. In this work, we develop methods to automatically extract named entities and relationships among the entities from plain text and hence our methods can be used to either complete the existing incomplete knowledge representation systems to create a new structured knowledge representation system from scratch. Unlike mainstream supervised methods for information extraction, our methods focus on the low-data scenario and do not require a large amount of annotated data. In the first part of the thesis, we focused on the problem of named entity recognition. We participated in the shared task of Bacteria Biotope 2019, the shared task consists of recognizing and normalizing the biomedical entity mentions. Our linguistically informed named entity recognition system consists of a deep learning based model which can extract both nested and flat entities; our model employed several linguistic features and auxiliary training objectives to enable efficient learning in data-scarce scenarios. Our entity normalization system employed string match, fuzzy search and semantic search to link the extracted named entities to the biomedical databases. Our named entity recognition and entity normalization system achieved the lowest slot error rate of 0.715 and ranked first in the shared task. We also participated in two shared tasks of Adverse Drug Effect Span detection (English) and Profession Span Detection (Spanish); both of these tasks collect data from the social media platform Twitter. We developed a named entity recognition model which can improve the input representation of the model by stacking heterogeneous embeddings from a diverse domain(s); our empirical results demonstrate complementary learning from these heterogeneous embeddings. Our submission ranked 3rd in both of the shared tasks. In the second part of the thesis, we explored synthetic data augmentation strategies to address low-resource information extraction in specialized domains. Specifically, we adapted backtranslation to the token-level task of named entity recognition and sentence-level task of relation extraction. We demonstrate that backtranslation can generate linguistically diverse and grammatically coherent synthetic sentences and serve as a competitive augmentation strategy for the task of named entity recognition and relation extraction. In most of the real-world relation extraction tasks, the annotated data is not available, however, quite often a large unannotated text corpus is available. Bootstrapping methods for relation extraction can operate on this large corpus as they only require a handful of seed instances. However, bootstrapping methods tend to accumulate noise over time (known as semantic drift) and this phenomenon has a drastic negative impact on the final precision of the extractions. We develop two methods to constrain the bootstrapping process to minimise semantic drift for relation extraction; our methods leverage graph theory and pre-trained language models to explicitly identify and remove noisy extraction patterns. We report the experimental results on the TACRED dataset for four relations. In the last part of the thesis, we demonstrate the application of domain adaptation to the challenging task of multi-lingual acronym extraction. Our experiments demonstrate that domain adaptation can improve acronym extraction within scientific and legal domains in 6 languages including low-resource languages such as Persian and Vietnamese

    Deep Learning for Text Style Transfer: A Survey

    Text style transfer is an important task in natural language generation, which aims to control certain attributes in the generated text, such as politeness, emotion, humor, and many others. It has a long history in the field of natural language processing, and recently has re-gained significant attention thanks to the promising performance brought by deep neural models. In this paper, we present a systematic survey of the research on neural text style transfer, spanning over 100 representative articles since the first neural text style transfer work in 2017. We discuss the task formulation, existing datasets and subtasks, evaluation, as well as the rich methodologies in the presence of parallel and non-parallel data. We also provide discussions on a variety of important topics regarding the future development of this task.     Scalable and Quality-Aware Training Data Acquisition for Conversational Cognitive Services

    Dialog Systems (or simply bots) have recently become a popular human-computer interface for performing user's tasks, by invoking the appropriate back-end APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) based on the user's request in natural language. Building task-oriented bots, which aim at performing real-world tasks (e.g., booking flights), has become feasible with the continuous advances in Natural Language Processing (NLP), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the countless number of devices which allow third-party software systems to invoke their back-end APIs. Nonetheless, bot development technologies are still in their preliminary stages, with several unsolved theoretical and technical challenges stemming from the ambiguous nature of human languages. Given the richness of natural language, supervised models require a large number of user utterances paired with their corresponding tasks -- called intents. To build a bot, developers need to manually translate APIs to utterances (called canonical utterances) and paraphrase them to obtain a diverse set of utterances. Crowdsourcing has been widely used to obtain such datasets, by paraphrasing the initial utterances generated by the bot developers for each task. However, there are several unsolved issues. First, generating canonical utterances requires manual efforts, making bot development both expensive and hard to scale. Second, since crowd workers may be anonymous and are asked to provide open-ended text (paraphrases), crowdsourced paraphrases may be noisy and incorrect (not conveying the same intent as the given task). This thesis first surveys the state-of-the-art approaches for collecting large training utterances for task-oriented bots. Next, we conduct an empirical study to identify quality issues of crowdsourced utterances (e.g., grammatical errors, semantic completeness). Moreover, we propose novel approaches for identifying unqualified crowd workers and eliminating malicious workers from crowdsourcing tasks. Particularly, we propose a novel technique to promote the diversity of crowdsourced paraphrases by dynamically generating word suggestions while crowd workers are paraphrasing a particular utterance. Moreover, we propose a novel technique to automatically translate APIs to canonical utterances. Finally, we present our platform to automatically generate bots out of API specifications. We also conduct thorough experiments to validate the proposed techniques and models

    Enhanced lexicon based models for extracting question-answer pairs from web forum

    A Web forum is an online community that brings people in different geographical locations together. Members of the forum exchange ideas and expertise. As a result, a huge amount of contents on different topics are generated on a daily basis. The huge human generated contents of web forum can be mined as questionanswer pairs (Q&A). One of the major challenges in mining Q&A from web forum is to establish a good relationship between the question and the candidate answers. This problem is compounded by the noisy nature of web forum's human generated contents. Unfortunately, the existing methods that are used to mine knowledge from web forums ignore the effect of noise on the mining tools, making the lexical contents less effective. This study proposes lexicon based models that can automatically mine question-answer pairs with higher accuracy scores from web forum. The first phase of the research produces question mining model. It was implemented using features generated from unigram, bigram, forum metadata and simple rules. These features were screened using both chi-square and wrapper techniques. Wrapper generated features were used by Multinomial Naïve Bayes to finally build the model. The second phase produced a normalized lexical model for answer mining. It was implemented using 13 lexical features that cut across four quality dimensions. The performance of the features was enhanced by noise normalization, a process that fixed orthographic, phonetic and acronyms noises. The third phase of the research produced a hybridized model of lexical and non-lexical features. The average performances of the question mining model, normalized lexical model and hybridized model for answer mining were 90.3%, 97.5%, and 99.5% respectively on three data sets used. They outperformed all previous works in the domain. The first major contribution of the study is the development of an improved question mining model that is characterized by higher accuracy, better specificity, less complex and ability to generate good accuracy across different forum genres. The second contribution is the development of normalized lexical based model that has capability to establish good relationship between a question and its corresponding answer. The third contribution is the development of a hybridized model that integrates lexical features that guarantee relevance with non-lexical that guarantee quality to mine web forum answers. The fourth contribution is a novel integration of question and answer mining models to automatically generate question-answer pairs from web forum

    Attention-based Approaches for Text Analytics in Social Media and Automatic Summarization

    [ES] Hoy en día, la sociedad tiene acceso y posibilidad de contribuir a grandes cantidades de contenidos presentes en Internet, como redes sociales, periódicos online, foros, blogs o plataformas de contenido multimedia. Todo este tipo de medios han tenido, durante los últimos años, un impacto abrumador en el día a día de individuos y organizaciones, siendo actualmente medios predominantes para compartir, debatir y analizar contenidos online. Por este motivo, resulta de interés trabajar sobre este tipo de plataformas, desde diferentes puntos de vista, bajo el paraguas del Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural. En esta tesis nos centramos en dos áreas amplias dentro de este campo, aplicadas al análisis de contenido en línea: análisis de texto en redes sociales y resumen automático. En paralelo, las redes neuronales también son un tema central de esta tesis, donde toda la experimentación se ha realizado utilizando enfoques de aprendizaje profundo, principalmente basados en mecanismos de atención. Además, trabajamos mayoritariamente con el idioma español, por ser un idioma poco explorado y de gran interés para los proyectos de investigación en los que participamos. Por un lado, para el análisis de texto en redes sociales, nos enfocamos en tareas de análisis afectivo, incluyendo análisis de sentimientos y detección de emociones, junto con el análisis de la ironía. En este sentido, se presenta un enfoque basado en Transformer Encoders, que consiste en contextualizar \textit{word embeddings} pre-entrenados con tweets en español, para abordar tareas de análisis de sentimiento y detección de ironía. También proponemos el uso de métricas de evaluación como funciones de pérdida, con el fin de entrenar redes neuronales, para reducir el impacto del desequilibrio de clases en tareas \textit{multi-class} y \textit{multi-label} de detección de emociones. Adicionalmente, se presenta una especialización de BERT tanto para el idioma español como para el dominio de Twitter, que tiene en cuenta la coherencia entre tweets en conversaciones de Twitter. El desempeño de todos estos enfoques ha sido probado con diferentes corpus, a partir de varios \textit{benchmarks} de referencia, mostrando resultados muy competitivos en todas las tareas abordadas. Por otro lado, nos centramos en el resumen extractivo de artículos periodísticos y de programas televisivos de debate. Con respecto al resumen de artículos, se presenta un marco teórico para el resumen extractivo, basado en redes jerárquicas siamesas con mecanismos de atención. También presentamos dos instancias de este marco: \textit{Siamese Hierarchical Attention Networks} y \textit{Siamese Hierarchical Transformer Encoders}. Estos sistemas han sido evaluados en los corpora CNN/DailyMail y NewsRoom, obteniendo resultados competitivos en comparación con otros enfoques extractivos coetáneos. Con respecto a los programas de debate, se ha propuesto una tarea que consiste en resumir las intervenciones transcritas de los ponentes, sobre un tema determinado, en el programa "La Noche en 24 Horas". Además, se propone un corpus de artículos periodísticos, recogidos de varios periódicos españoles en línea, con el fin de estudiar la transferibilidad de los enfoques propuestos, entre artículos e intervenciones de los participantes en los debates. Este enfoque muestra mejores resultados que otras técnicas extractivas, junto con una transferibilidad de dominio muy prometedora.[CA] Avui en dia, la societat té accés i possibilitat de contribuir a grans quantitats de continguts presents a Internet, com xarxes socials, diaris online, fòrums, blocs o plataformes de contingut multimèdia. Tot aquest tipus de mitjans han tingut, durant els darrers anys, un impacte aclaparador en el dia a dia d'individus i organitzacions, sent actualment mitjans predominants per compartir, debatre i analitzar continguts en línia. Per aquest motiu, resulta d'interès treballar sobre aquest tipus de plataformes, des de diferents punts de vista, sota el paraigua de l'Processament de el Llenguatge Natural. En aquesta tesi ens centrem en dues àrees àmplies dins d'aquest camp, aplicades a l'anàlisi de contingut en línia: anàlisi de text en xarxes socials i resum automàtic. En paral·lel, les xarxes neuronals també són un tema central d'aquesta tesi, on tota l'experimentació s'ha realitzat utilitzant enfocaments d'aprenentatge profund, principalment basats en mecanismes d'atenció. A més, treballem majoritàriament amb l'idioma espanyol, per ser un idioma poc explorat i de gran interès per als projectes de recerca en els que participem. D'una banda, per a l'anàlisi de text en xarxes socials, ens enfoquem en tasques d'anàlisi afectiu, incloent anàlisi de sentiments i detecció d'emocions, juntament amb l'anàlisi de la ironia. En aquest sentit, es presenta una aproximació basada en Transformer Encoders, que consisteix en contextualitzar \textit{word embeddings} pre-entrenats amb tweets en espanyol, per abordar tasques d'anàlisi de sentiment i detecció d'ironia. També proposem l'ús de mètriques d'avaluació com a funcions de pèrdua, per tal d'entrenar xarxes neuronals, per reduir l'impacte de l'desequilibri de classes en tasques \textit{multi-class} i \textit{multi-label} de detecció d'emocions. Addicionalment, es presenta una especialització de BERT tant per l'idioma espanyol com per al domini de Twitter, que té en compte la coherència entre tweets en converses de Twitter. Aquesta aproximació mostra millors resultats que altres tècniques extractives, juntament amb una transferibilitat de domini molt prometedora.[EN] Nowadays, society has access, and the possibility to contribute, to large amounts of the content present on the internet, such as social networks, online newspapers, forums, blogs, or multimedia content platforms. These platforms have had, during the last years, an overwhelming impact on the daily life of individuals and organizations, becoming the predominant ways for sharing, discussing, and analyzing online content. Therefore, it is very interesting to work with these platforms, from different points of view, under the umbrella of Natural Language Processing. In this thesis, we focus on two broad areas inside this field, applied to analyze online content: text analytics in social media and automatic summarization. Neural networks are also a central topic in this thesis, where all the experimentation has been performed by using deep learning approaches, mainly based on attention mechanisms. Besides, we mostly work with the Spanish language, due to it is an interesting and underexplored language with a great interest in the research projects we participated in. On the one hand, for text analytics in social media, we focused on affective analysis tasks, including sentiment analysis and emotion detection, along with the analysis of the irony. In this regard, an approach based on Transformer Encoders, based on contextualizing pretrained Spanish word embeddings from Twitter, to address sentiment analysis and irony detection tasks, is presented. We also propose the use of evaluation metrics as loss functions, in order to train neural networks for reducing the impact of the class imbalance in multi-class and multi-label emotion detection tasks. Additionally, a specialization of BERT both for the Spanish language and the Twitter domain, that takes into account inter-sentence coherence in Twitter conversation flows, is presented. The performance of all these approaches has been tested with different corpora, from several reference evaluation benchmarks, showing very competitive results in all the tasks addressed. On the other hand, we focused on extractive summarization of news articles and TV talk shows. Regarding the summarization of news articles, a theoretical framework for extractive summarization, based on siamese hierarchical networks with attention mechanisms, is presented. Also, we present two instantiations of this framework: Siamese Hierarchical Attention Networks and Siamese Hierarchical Transformer Encoders. These systems were evaluated on the CNN/DailyMail and the NewsRoom corpora, obtaining competitive results in comparison to other contemporary extractive approaches. Concerning the TV talk shows, we proposed a text summarization task, for summarizing the transcribed interventions of the speakers, about a given topic, in the Spanish TV talk shows of the ``La Noche en 24 Horas" program. In addition, a corpus of news articles, collected from several Spanish online newspapers, is proposed, in order to study the domain transferability of siamese hierarchical approaches, between news articles and interventions of debate participants.     #FemEdTech Cartography: Shifting Academic Culture Through Collaborative Policy Creation

    Recognizing the need to equip and empower individuals and societies, intergovernmental organizations like the United Nations have created policy recommendations for member countries. Many of these recommendations include promoting open practices, such as creating and using open educational resources and publishing in open access platforms (UNESCO, 2012, 2019). Policy frameworks at the intergovernmental level are far removed from levels of implementation. This distance can hinder policy success (Ansell et al., 2017). Another barrier to open scholarship policy implementation lies in the traditional, dominant academic culture strongly influenced by the prestige economy (Blackmore & Kandiko, 2011; Fitzpatrick, 2019; Jhiangiani, 2017). Public engagement and collaboration through networked practices—known as networked participatory scholarship (NPS)—may influence academic culture to “support, amplify, and transform scholarship” (Veletsianos & Kimmons, 2012b, p. 768). This study examined the open online scholarly community #FemEdTech as it engages in NPS to create, collect, and curate value statements to generate iterative codes of conduct. Contents of tweets that include the Twitter hashtags #FemEdTech and #FemEdTechValues were thematized and categorized in alignment with the principles of a feminist Internet (Association for Progressive Communications, 2020a−2020q). The findings are represented as a visual metaphor of a map charting the fluid nature between policy design and implementation, described as the #FemEdTech Cartography. This collaborative policy creation can serve as a model to shift academic culture towards more socially just practices using open scholarship to address the pressing issues of our time
