    Improved Incremental Randomized Delaunay Triangulation

    We propose a new data structure to compute the Delaunay triangulation of a set of points in the plane. It combines good worst case complexity, fast behavior on real data, and small memory occupation. The location structure is organized into several levels. The lowest level just consists of the triangulation, then each level contains the triangulation of a small sample of the levels below. Point location is done by marching in a triangulation to determine the nearest neighbor of the query at that level, then the march restarts from that neighbor at the level below. Using a small sample (3%) allows a small memory occupation; the march and the use of the nearest neighbor to change levels quickly locate the query.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures Proc. 14th Annu.     Data Structures for Halfplane Proximity Queries and Incremental Voronoi Diagrams

    We consider preprocessing a set SS of nn points in convex position in the plane into a data structure supporting queries of the following form: given a point qq and a directed line \ell in the plane, report the point of SS that is farthest from (or, alternatively, nearest to) the point qq among all points to the left of line \ell. We present two data structures for this problem. The first data structure uses O(n1+ε)O(n^{1+\varepsilon}) space and preprocessing time, and answers queries in O(21/εlogn)O(2^{1/\varepsilon} \log n) time, for any 0<ε<10 < \varepsilon < 1. The second data structure uses O(nlog3n)O(n \log^3 n) space and polynomial preprocessing time, and answers queries in O(logn)O(\log n) time. These are the first solutions to the problem with O(logn)O(\log n) query time and o(n2)o(n^2) space. The second data structure uses a new representation of nearest- and farthest-point Voronoi diagrams of points in convex position. This representation supports the insertion of new points in clockwise order using only O(logn)O(\log n) amortized pointer changes, in addition to O(logn)O(\log n)-time point-location queries, even though every such update may make Θ(n)\Theta(n) combinatorial changes to the Voronoi diagram. This data structure is the first demonstration that deterministically and incrementally constructed Voronoi diagrams can be maintained in o(n)o(n) amortized pointer changes per operation while keeping O(logn)O(\log n)-time point-location queries.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures.     Algorithms for Triangles, Cones & Peaks

    Three different geometric objects are at the center of this dissertation: triangles, cones and peaks. In computational geometry, triangles are the most basic shape for planar subdivisions. Particularly, Delaunay triangulations are a widely used for manifold applications in engineering, geographic information systems, telecommunication networks, etc. We present two novel parallel algorithms to construct the Delaunay triangulation of a given point set. Yao graphs are geometric spanners that connect each point of a given set to its nearest neighbor in each of kk cones drawn around it. They are used to aid the construction of Euclidean minimum spanning trees or in wireless networks for topology control and routing. We present the first implementation of an optimal O(nlogn)\mathcal{O}(n \log n)-time sweepline algorithm to construct Yao graphs. One metric to quantify the importance of a mountain peak is its isolation. Isolation measures the distance between a peak and the closest point of higher elevation. Computing this metric from high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) requires efficient algorithms. We present a novel sweep-plane algorithm that can calculate the isolation of all peaks on Earth in mere minutes

    A Variational r-Adaption and Shape-Optimization Method for Finite-Deformation Elasticity

    This paper is concerned with the formulation of a variational r-adaption method for finite-deformation elastostatic problems. The distinguishing characteristic of the method is that the variational principle simultaneously supplies the solution, the optimal mesh and, in problems of shape optimization, the equilibrium shapes of the system. This is accomplished by minimizing the energy functional with respect to the nodal field values as well as with respect to the triangulation of the domain of analysis. Energy minimization with respect to the referential nodal positions has the effect of equilibrating the energetic or configurational forces acting on the nodes. We derive general expressions for the configuration forces for isoparametric elements and nonlinear, possibly anisotropic, materials under general loading. We illustrate the versatility and convergence characteristics of the method by way of selected numerical tests and applications, including the problem of a semi-infinite crack in linear and nonlinear elastic bodies; and the optimization of the shape of elastic inclusions

    By providing parallelized versions of established algorithm libraries, we ease the exploitation of the multiple cores on modern processors for the programmer. The Multi-Core STL provides basic algorithms for internal memory, while the parallelized STXXL enables multi-core acceleration for algorithms on large data sets stored on disk. Some parallelized geometric algorithms are introduced into CGAL. Further, we design and implement sorting algorithms for huge data in distributed external memory

    Novel approaches for constructing persistent Delaunay triangulations by applying different equations and different methods

    “Delaunay triangulation and data structures are an essential field of study and research in computer science, for this reason, the correct choices, and an adequate design are essential for the development of algorithms for the efficient storage and/or retrieval of information. However, most structures are usually ephemeral, which means keeping all versions, in different copies, of the same data structure is expensive. The problem arises of developing data structures that are capable of maintaining different versions of themselves, minimizing the cost of memory, and keeping the performance of operations as close as possible to the original structure. Therefore, this research aims to aims to examine the feasibility concepts of Spatio-temporal structures such as persistence, to design a Delaunay triangulation algorithm so that it is possible to make queries and modifications at a certain time t, minimizing spatial and temporal complexity. Four new persistent data structures for Delaunay triangulation (Bowyer-Watson, Walk, Hybrid, and Graph) were proposed and developed. The results of using random images and vertex databases with different data (DAG and CGAL), proved that the data structure in its partial version is better than the other data structures that do not have persistence.     Building Robust Distributed Infrastructure Networks

    Many competing designs for Distributed Hash Tables exist exploring multiple models of addressing, routing and network maintenance. Designing a general theoretical model and implementation of a Distributed Hash Table allows exploration of the possible properties of Distributed Hash Tables. We will propose a generalized model of DHT behavior, centered on utilizing Delaunay triangulation in a given metric space to maintain the networks topology. We will show that utilizing this model we can produce network topologies that approximate existing DHT methods and provide a starting point for further exploration. We will use our generalized model of DHT construction to design and implement more efficient Distributed Hash Table protocols, and discuss the qualities of potential successors to existing DHT technologies
