    Machine-learning-based condition assessment of gas turbine: a review

    Condition monitoring, diagnostics, and prognostics are key factors in today’s competitive industrial sector. Equipment digitalisation has increased the amount of available data throughout the industrial process, and the development of new and more advanced techniques has significantly improved the performance of industrial machines. This publication focuses on surveying the last decade of evolution of condition monitoring, diagnostic, and prognostic techniques using machinelearning (ML)-based models for the improvement of the operational performance of gas turbines. A comprehensive review of the literature led to a performance assessment of ML models and their applications to gas turbines, as well as a discussion of the major challenges and opportunities for the research on these kind of engines. This paper further concludes that the combination of the available information captured through the collectors and the ML techniques shows promising results in increasing the accuracy, robustness, precision, and generalisation of industrial gas turbine equipment.This research was funded by Siemens Energy.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Acquisition and distribution of synergistic reactive control skills

    Learning from demonstration is an afficient way to attain a new skill. In the context of autonomous robots, using a demonstration to teach a robot accelerates the robot learning process significantly. It helps to identify feasible solutions as starting points for future exploration or to avoid actions that lead to failure. But the acquisition of pertinent observationa is predicated on first segmenting the data into meaningful sequences. These segments form the basis for learning models capable of recognising future actions and reconstructing the motion to control a robot. Furthermore, learning algorithms for generative models are generally not tuned to produce stable trajectories and suffer from parameter redundancy for high degree of freedom robots This thesis addresses these issues by firstly investigating algorithms, based on dynamic programming and mixture models, for segmentation sensitivity and recognition accuracy on human motion capture data sets of repetitive and categorical motion classes. A stability analysis of the non-linear dynamical systems derived from the resultant mixture model representations aims to ensure that any trajectories converge to the intended target motion as observed in the demonstrations. Finally, these concepts are extended to humanoid robots by deploying a factor analyser for each mixture model component and coordinating the structure into a low dimensional representation of the demonstrated trajectories. This representation can be constructed as a correspondence map is learned between the demonstrator and robot for joint space actions. Applying these algorithms for demonstrating movement skills to robot is a further step towards autonomous incremental robot learning

    Mimicking human player strategies in fighting games using game artificial intelligence techniques

    Fighting videogames (also known as fighting games) are ever growing in popularity and accessibility. The isolated console experiences of 20th century gaming has been replaced by online gaming services that allow gamers to play from almost anywhere in the world with one another. This gives rise to competitive gaming on a global scale enabling them to experience fresh play styles and challenges by playing someone new. Fighting games can typically be played either as a single player experience, or against another human player, whether it is via a network or a traditional multiplayer experience. However, there are two issues with these approaches. First, the single player offering in many fighting games is regarded as being simplistic in design, making the moves by the computer predictable. Secondly, while playing against other human players can be more varied and challenging, this may not always be achievable due to the logistics involved in setting up such a bout. Game Artificial Intelligence could provide a solution to both of these issues, allowing a human player s strategy to be learned and then mimicked by the AI fighter. In this thesis, game AI techniques have been researched to provide a means of mimicking human player strategies in strategic fighting games with multiple parameters. Various techniques and their current usages are surveyed, informing the design of two separate solutions to this problem. The first solution relies solely on leveraging k nearest neighbour classification to identify which move should be executed based on the in-game parameters, resulting in decisions being made at the operational level and being fed from the bottom-up to the strategic level. The second solution utilises a number of existing Artificial Intelligence techniques, including data driven finite state machines, hierarchical clustering and k nearest neighbour classification, in an architecture that makes decisions at the strategic level and feeds them from the top-down to the operational level, resulting in the execution of moves. This design is underpinned by a novel algorithm to aid the mimicking process, which is used to identify patterns and strategies within data collated during bouts between two human players. Both solutions are evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively. A conclusion summarising the findings, as well as future work, is provided. The conclusions highlight the fact that both solutions are proficient in mimicking human strategies, but each has its own strengths depending on the type of strategy played out by the human. More structured, methodical strategies are better mimicked by the data driven finite state machine hybrid architecture, whereas the k nearest neighbour approach is better suited to tactical approaches, or even random button bashing that does not always conform to a pre-defined strategy

    Diagnosis of skin cancer using novel computer vision and deep learning techniques

    Recent years have noticed an increase in the total number of skin cancer cases and it is projected to grow exponentially, however mortality rate of malignant melanoma can be decreased if it is diagnosed and treated in its early stage. Notwithstanding the fact that visual similarity between benign and malignant lesions makes the task of diagnosis difficult even for an expert dermatologist, thereby increasing the chances of false prediction. This dissertation proposes two novel methods of computer-aided diagnosis for the classification of malignant lesion. The first method pre-processes the acquired image by the Dull razor method (for digital hair removal) and histogram equalisation. Henceforth the image is segmented by the proposed method using LR-fuzzy logic and it achieves an accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of 96.50%, 97.50% and 96.25% for the PH2 dataset; 96.16%, 91.88% and 98.26% for the ISIC 2017 dataset; 95.91%, 91.62% and 97.37% for ISIC 2018 dataset respectively. Furthermore, the image is classified by the modified You Only Look Once (YOLO v3) classifier and it yields an accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of 98.16%, 95.43%, and 99.50% respectively. The second method enhances the images by removing digital artefacts and histogram equalisation. Thereafter, triangular neutrosophic number (TNN) is used for segmentation of lesion, which achieves an accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 99.00%, 97.50%, 99.38% for PH2; 98.83%, 98.48%, 99.01% for ISIC 2017; 98.56%, 98.50%, 98.58% for ISIC 2018; and 97.86%, 97.56%, 97.97% for ISIC 2019 dataset respectively. Furthermore, data augmentation is performed by the addition of artefacts and noise to the training dataset and rotating the images at an angle of 650, 1350, and 2150 such that the training dataset is increased to 92838 from 30946 images. Additionally, a novel classifier based on inception and residual module is trained over augmented dataset and it is able to achieve an accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of 99.50%, 100%, 99.38% for PH2; 99.33%, 98.48%, 99.75% for ISIC 2017; 98.56%, 97.61%, 98.88% for ISIC 2018 and 98.04%, 96.67%, 98.52% for ISIC 2019 dataset respectively. Later in our dissertation, the proposed methods are deployed into real-time mobile applications, therefore enabling the users to diagnose the suspected lesion with ease and accuracy

    Clustering Architectures: The Role of Materialities for Emerging Collectives in the Public Domain

    This thesis is a study of social life, addressing issues concerning how and by what means people meet in urban public space. The main aim of this thesis is to is to investigate how certain artefacts and architectural features support the formation and temporal stabilisation of heterogeneous clusters and collectives, and thus, in order to the development of conceptual tools that can contribute to a more refined description and analysis of the role of architecture and artefacts for urban public life [a very long sentence…]. An important basis for this thesis is the conception of public life as an agglomeration of multiple, coexisting clusters of humans and nonhumans. Thus, urban public life can here be seen here as an effect of adding and losing parts of collectives – through the production and re-production of associations between human and nonhuman entities.The work has been carried out by the application and further development of concepts and methods mainly taken from territorology and actor-network theory (ANT). Affordance theory constitutes an additional theoretical approach that is included in the this thesis, however albeit to a less significant extent. Key questions related to the main objectives and the theoretical framework are for example: what What kind of competences, regarding territorial production and social exchange, can be associated to with material artefacts and to spatial configurations? Who and what constitutes actions and events that facilitate human co-existence in urban domains, ; i.e. how is urban public life produced?The empirical investigations consist of field studies of consumption spaces (open-air markets in London), leisure and play (playgrounds in Amsterdam) and spaces characterised by managed and curated activities (leisure spaces in Paris). The study sites were primarily selected because of their potential richness and diversity of socio-material exchanges. They also constitute intense gatherings of people, doing things together and individually, in close proximity of to fairly unknown others. The field study techniques employed in this thesis – guided by participant observation and photographic documentation – are mainly inspired by ‘visual ethnography’ as it is outlined by Sarah Pink and others, paired with public life studies executed by for example William H. Whyte and Jan Gehl.The studies explore how human interactions in urban spaces are dependent on networks that include artefacts, time, local policies and situated public cultures and practices. The main empirical findings were are successively conceptualised, tried in the empirical analysis and developed into a framework. The main themes – or actant categories – where materialities were found to be important for social interactions are: Anchors, Base Camps, Tickets and Rides; Monocore and Multitcore Spaces; Punctiform, Linear and Field Seating; and Ladders.These six actant categories, constituting the major outcomes of this thesis, can be seen as parts of a conceptual toolbox for investigating socio-material exchange and clustering in public domains. The conceptual tools suggest a particular attention to artefacts and architecture as significant social mediators, potentially facilitating encounters and exchanges between strangers. The actants are intended to supplement the terminology with which issues of social life in urban space are discussed and deconstructed. The actants are also intended to contribute more directly to planning and urban design practices, as operative tools, framing a relational, performative and processual approach to urban public domains.In this thesis, I have tried to show that the particular design and distribution of materialities in public domains have major strategic implications for questions regarding concerning co-existence, communality and collaboration. The proposed actants thus also represent an attempt to approach the challenges of segregation and polarisation through planning and urban design; not in an instrumental respect, or as recipes for a particular design concept, but as analytical keys that may support a more comprehensive understanding of actors and forces that profoundly affect social life in the public domain

    For several generations, scientists have attempted to build enhanced intelligence into computer systems. Recently, progress in developing and implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) has quickened. AI is now attracting the attention of business and government leaders as a potential way to optimise decisions and performance across all management levels from operational to strategic. One of the business areas where AI is being used widely is the Recruitment and Selection (R&S) process. However, in spite of this tremendous growth in interest in AI, there is a serious lack of understanding of the potential impact of AI on human life, society and culture. One of the most significant issues is the danger of biases being built into the gathering and analysis of data and subsequent decision-making. Cognitive biases occur in algorithmic models by reflecting the implicit values of the humans involved in defining, coding, collecting, selecting or using data to train the algorithm. The biases can then be self-reinforcing using machine learning, causing AI to engage in ‘biased’ decisions. In order to use AI systems to guide managers in making effective decisions, unbiased AI is required. This study adopted an exploratory and qualitative research design to explore potential biases in the R&S process and how cognitive biases can be mitigated in the development of AI-Recruitment Systems (AIRS). The classic grounded theory was used to guide the study design, data gathering and analysis. Thirty-nine HR managers and AI developers globally were interviewed. The findings empirically represent the development process of AIRS, as well as technical and non-technical techniques in each stage of the process to mitigate cognitive biases. The study contributes to the theory of information system design by explaining the phase of retraining that correlates with continuous mutability in developing AI. AI is developed through retraining the machine learning models as part of the development process, which shows the mutability of the system. The learning process over many training cycles improves the algorithms’ accuracy. This study also extends the knowledge sharing concepts by highlighting the importance of HR managers’ and AI developers’ cross-functional knowledge sharing to mitigate cognitive biases in developing AIRS. Knowledge sharing in developing AIRS can occur in understanding the essential criteria for each job position, preparing datasets for training ML models, testing ML models, and giving feedback, retraining, and improving ML models. Finally, this study contributes to our understanding of the concept of AI transparency by identifying two known cognitive biases similar-to-me bias and stereotype bias in the R&S process that assist in assessing the ML model outcome. In addition, the AIRS process model provides a good understanding of data collection, data preparation and training and retraining the ML model and indicates the role of HR managers and AI developers to mitigate biases and their accountability for AIRS decisions. The development process of unbiased AIRS offers significant implications for the human resource field as well as other fields/industries where AI is used today, such as the education system and insurance services, to mitigate cognitive biases in the development process of AI. In addition, this study provides information about the limitations of AI systems and educates human decision makers (i.e. HR managers) to avoid building biases into their systems in the first place

    Detection of vulnerable communities in East Africa via novel data streams and dynamic stochastic block models

    In developing countries it is challenging to collect data on poverty and its associated community health characteristics. Data collection in this context is impractically laborious and resource greedy. Additionally due to the sensitive nature of these themes the data is often unreliable. There is a need for alternative methods of detection of vulnerable communities. However, promising opportunities arise via novel rich data streams such as Call Data Records stemming from the ubiquitous use of mobile phones. Despite the growth of Call Data Record data there has been limited previous application to problems of poverty and development. This thesis makes three main contributions: (i) Methods of collecting ground truth data in Developing areas; (ii) Best practices in application to detect vulnerable regions; (iii) Development of new applications of statistical approaches to the problem via the stochastic block model. This work is focused on Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Having more reliable and easily accessible truths on these vulnerabilities can have a high potential impact for policy makers and NGOs trying to make positive changes to reduce devastating effects of poverty. This thesis produces comprehensive results to amend the current knowledge gaps, via rigorous fine-grained data collection processes surveying the 452 subwards in Dar es Salaam in relation to poverty and social vulnerability
