    Beyond the Waterbed Effect: Development of Fractional Order CRONE Control with Non-Linear Reset

    In this paper a novel reset control synthesis method is proposed: CRONE reset control, combining a robust fractional CRONE controller with non-linear reset control to overcome waterbed effect. In CRONE control, robustness is achieved by creation of constant phase behaviour around bandwidth with the use of fractional operators, also allowing more freedom in shaping the open-loop frequency response. However, being a linear controller it suffers from the inevitable trade-off between robustness and performance as a result of the waterbed effect. Here reset control is introduced in the CRONE design to overcome the fundamental limitations. In the new controller design, reset phase advantage is approximated using describing function analysis and used to achieve better open-loop shape. Sufficient quadratic stability conditions are shown for the designed CRONE reset controllers and the control design is validated on a Lorentz-actuated nanometre precision stage. It is shown that for similar phase margin, better performance in terms of reference-tracking and noise attenuation can be achieved.Comment: American Control Conference 201

    Multi-Objective Robust H-infinity Control of Spacecraft Rendezvous

    Based on the relative motion dynamic model illustrated by C-W equations, the problem of robust Hinfin control for a class of spacecraft rendezvous systems is investigated, which contains parametric uncertainties, external disturbances and input constraints. An Hinfin state-feedback controller is designed via a Lyapunov approach, which guarantees the closed-loop system to meet the multi-objective design requirements. The existence conditions for admissible controllers are formulated in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), and the controller design is cast into a convex optimization problem subject to LMI constraints. An illustrative example is provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed control design method

    Robust nonlinear control of vectored thrust aircraft

    An interdisciplinary program in robust control for nonlinear systems with applications to a variety of engineering problems is outlined. Major emphasis will be placed on flight control, with both experimental and analytical studies. This program builds on recent new results in control theory for stability, stabilization, robust stability, robust performance, synthesis, and model reduction in a unified framework using Linear Fractional Transformations (LFT's), Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI's), and the structured singular value micron. Most of these new advances have been accomplished by the Caltech controls group independently or in collaboration with researchers in other institutions. These recent results offer a new and remarkably unified framework for all aspects of robust control, but what is particularly important for this program is that they also have important implications for system identification and control of nonlinear systems. This combines well with Caltech's expertise in nonlinear control theory, both in geometric methods and methods for systems with constraints and saturations

    Low order harmonic cancellation in a grid connected multiple inverter system via current control parameter randomization

    In grid connected multiple inverter systems, it is normal to synchronize the output current of each inverter to the common network voltage. Any current controller deficiencies, which result in low order harmonics, are also synchronized to the common network voltage. As a result the harmonics produced by individual converters show a high degree of correlation and tend to be additive. Each controller can be tuned to achieve a different harmonic profile so that harmonic cancellation can take place in the overall system, thus reducing the net current total harmonic distortion level. However, inter-inverter communication is required. This paper presents experimental results demonstrating an alternative approach, which is to arrange for the tuning within each inverter to be adjusted automatically with a random component. This results in a harmonic output spectrum that varies with time, but is uncorrelated with the harmonic spectrum of any other inverter in the system. The net harmonics from all the inverters undergo a degree of cancellation and the overall system yields a net improvement in power quality

    A selective technical overview is presented on the vibration and control of large space structures, the analysis, design, and construction of which will require major technical contributions from the civil/structural, mechanical, and extended engineering communities. The immediacy of the U.S. space station makes the particular emphasis placed on large space structures and their control appropriate. The space station is but one part of the space program, and includes the lunar base, which the space station is to service. This paper attempts to summarize some of the key technical issues and hence provide a starting point for further involvement. The first half of this paper provides an introduction and overview of large space structures and their dynamics; the latter half discusses structural control, including control‐system design and nonlinearities. A crucial aspect of the large space structures problem is that dynamics and control must be considered simultaneously; the problems cannot be addressed individually and coupled as an afterthought

    Insensitive control technology development

    THe investigation of two insensitive controller synthesis techniques was reported. The finite dimensional inverse approach produces a time varying insensitive controller and/or parameter identifier by constructing inverse functions derived from a finite number of input output pair relationships. The MD/IM concept relies on the information matrix theory that was developed in the estimation and identification field. The MD/IM synthesis technique is based on the hypothesis that minimizing the information matrix will reduce system identifiability and consequently system sensitivity to uncertain parameters. The controllers designed with both techniques were evaluated on a realistic C-5A aircraft flight control problem. Results indicate that the FDI controller is more suited to trajectory type problems because of its time varying nature. The MD/IM controller performed as well as the top-rated controllers of the initial effort and has direct application to aircraft flight control problems

    Frequency-Weighted Model Reduction with Applications to Structured Models

    In this paper, a frequency-weighted extension of a recently proposed model reduction method for linear systems is presented. The method uses convex optimization and can be used both with sample data and exact models. We also obtain bounds on the frequency-weighted error. The method is combined with a rank-minimization heuristic to approximate multiinput– multi-output systems.We also present two applications— environment compensation and simplification of interconnected models — where we argue the proposed methods are useful
