Course developers as students: a designer perspective of the experience of learning online
Academic developers of online courses may not have experienced this mode of learning and teaching from the learner perspective. This article makes a comparison between suggestions for online course design from research literature and user perspectives from a focus group, responses to questions on the most and least effective aspects of online study and lasting impressions, and from reflective diaries kept by two of the authors while they were engaged in study from online courses. This direct evidence is used to highlight key issues in the literature from the viewpoint of the learner
Tangible participation
This rapport consists of a seminar paper from a 2012 CERTEC seminar with Per Linde from MEDEA/MU as invited opponent. It presents an exploration into program-based constructive de-sign research elaborating on the dynamics between a programme at large and its design experiments. As such it suggests ways for a programme to connect designerly actions suitable for the field with a take on the world; i.e. not only visions for and views on a design space to be explored, but also a take on knowledge construction tightly coupled to a will and motivation to participate in the field; in casu a pedagogical practice. Furthermore, the text introduces key notions such as Digital animism / vĂŠsen, Tangible participation, and Extended materiality, as well as give early descriptions of design artefacts and interventions in the pedagogical practice of Snoezelen

Augmenting the field experience: a student-led comparison of techniques and technologies
In this study we report on our experiences of creating and running a student fieldtrip exercise which allowed students to compare a range of approaches to the design of technologies for augmenting landscape scenes. The main study site is around Keswick in the English Lake District, Cumbria, UK, an attractive upland environment popular with tourists and walkers. The aim of the exercise for the students was to assess the effectiveness of various forms of geographic information in augmenting real landscape scenes, as mediated through a range of techniques and technologies. These techniques were: computer-generated acetate overlays showing annotated wireframe views from certain key points; a custom-designed application running on a PDA; a mediascape running on the mScape software on a GPS-enabled mobile phone; Google Earth on a tablet PC; and a head-mounted in-field Virtual Reality system. Each group of students had all five techniques available to them, and were tasked with comparing them in the context of creating a visitor guide to the area centred on the field centre. Here we summarise their findings and reflect upon some of the broader research questions emerging from the project

Reinventing learning: a design-research odyssey
Design research is a broad, practice-based approach to investigating problems of education. This approach can catalyze the development of learning theory by fostering opportunities for transformational change in scholarsâ interpretation of instructional interactions. Surveying a succession of design-research projects, I explain how challenges in understanding studentsâ behaviors promoted my own recapitulation of a historical evolution in educatorsâ conceptualizations of learningâRomantic, Progressivist, and Synthetic (Schön, Intuitive thinking? In reflection, I consider methodological adaptations to design-research practice that may enhance its contributions in accord with its objectives
