A Process Framework for Semantics-aware Tourism Information Systems

A Survey of Languages for Specifying Dynamics: A Knowledge Engineering Perspective
A number of formal specification languages for knowledge-based systems has been developed. Characteristics for knowledge-based systems are a complex knowledge base and an inference engine which uses this knowledge to solve a given problem. Specification languages for knowledge-based systems have to cover both aspects. They have to provide the means to specify a complex and large amount of knowledge and they have to provide the means to specify the dynamic reasoning behavior of a knowledge-based system. We focus on the second aspect. For this purpose, we survey existing approaches for specifying dynamic behavior in related areas of research. In fact, we have taken approaches for the specification of information systems (Language for Conceptual Modeling and TROLL), approaches for the specification of database updates and logic programming (Transaction Logic and Dynamic Database Logic) and the generic specification framework of abstract state machine
Uniform: The Form Validation Language
Digital forms are becoming increasingly more prevalent but the ease of creation is not. Web Forms are difficult to produce and validate. This design project seeks to simplify this process. This project is comprised of two parts: a logical programming language (Uniform) and a web application.
Uniform is a language that allows its users to define logical relationships between web elements and apply simple rules to individual inputs to both validate the form and manipulate its components depending on user input. Uniform provides an extra layer of abstraction to complex coding.
The web app implements Uniform to provide business-level programmers with an interface to build and manage forms. Users will create form templates, manage form instances, and cooperatively complete forms through the web app.
Uniform’s development is ongoing, it will receive continued support and is available as open-source. The web application is software owned and maintained by HP Inc. which will be developed further before going to market
Supporting the Everyday Work of Scientists: Automating Scientific Workflows
This paper describes an action research project that we undertook with National Research Council Canada (NRC) scientists. Based on discussions about their \ud
difficulties in using software to collect data and manage processes, we identified three requirements for increasing research productivity: ease of use for end- \ud
users; managing scientific workflows; and facilitating software interoperability. Based on these requirements, we developed a software framework, Sweet, to \ud
assist in the automation of scientific workflows. \ud

Throughout the iterative development process, and through a series of structured interviews, we evaluated how the framework was used in practice, and identified \ud
increases in productivity and effectiveness and their causes. While the framework provides resources for writing application wrappers, it was easier to code the applications’ functionality directly into the framework using OSS components. Ease of use for the end-user and flexible and fully parameterized workflow representations were key elements of the framework’s success. \u
Intelligent Integrated Management for Telecommunication Networks
As the size of communication networks keeps on growing, faster connections, cooperating technologies and the divergence of equipment and data communications, the management of the resulting networks gets additional important and time-critical. More advanced tools are needed to support this activity. In this article we describe the design and implementation of a management platform using Artificial Intelligent reasoning technique. For this goal we make use of an expert system. This study focuses on an intelligent framework and a language for formalizing knowledge management descriptions and combining them with existing OSI management model. We propose a new paradigm where the intelligent network management is integrated into the conceptual repository of management information called Managed Information Base (MIB). This paper outlines the development of an expert system prototype based in our propose GDMO+ standard and describes the most important facets, advantages and drawbacks that were found after prototyping our proposal
A model-driven approach to broaden the detection of software performance antipatterns at runtime
Performance antipatterns document bad design patterns that have negative
influence on system performance. In our previous work we formalized such
antipatterns as logical predicates that predicate on four views: (i) the static
view that captures the software elements (e.g. classes, components) and the
static relationships among them; (ii) the dynamic view that represents the
interaction (e.g. messages) that occurs between the software entities elements
to provide the system functionalities; (iii) the deployment view that describes
the hardware elements (e.g. processing nodes) and the mapping of the software
entities onto the hardware platform; (iv) the performance view that collects
specific performance indices. In this paper we present a lightweight
infrastructure that is able to detect performance antipatterns at runtime
through monitoring. The proposed approach precalculates such predicates and
identifies antipatterns whose static, dynamic and deployment sub-predicates are
validated by the current system configuration and brings at runtime the
verification of performance sub-predicates. The proposed infrastructure
leverages model-driven techniques to generate probes for monitoring the

A planning approach to the automated synthesis of template-based process models
The design-time specification of flexible processes can be time-consuming and error-prone, due to the high number of tasks involved and their context-dependent nature. Such processes frequently suffer from potential interference among their constituents, since resources are usually shared by the process participants and it is difficult to foresee all the potential tasks interactions in advance. Concurrent tasks may not be independent from each other (e.g., they could operate on the same data at the same time), resulting in incorrect outcomes. To tackle these issues, we propose an approach for the automated synthesis of a library of template-based process models that achieve goals in dynamic and partially specified environments. The approach is based on a declarative problem definition and partial-order planning algorithms for template generation. The resulting templates guarantee sound concurrency in the execution of their activities and are reusable in a variety of partially specified contextual environments.
