Changing Tools Changing Attitudes: Effects of introducing a computer system to promote learning at work
The use of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) tools to manage and support learning at
work offers a lot of advantages, such as the increase in the availability and access to knowledge.
However, computer systems also introduce new ways of doing things, which may impact on their
acceptability and usage in an organisation. The study considers the issue of re-mediating human
activity through the introduction of a CSCL system to support collaborative organisational learning
(COL) activities as a way of promoting learning at work. A comparative study into the effects of remediating
work practices in an organisation was conducted 'before' and 'after' the introduction of a
CSCL system using three selected constitutive elements of COL namely: collaboration, knowledge
sharing and interactivity. The study used activity theory as a framework for examining the support
mechanisms for the selected elements of COL from a social and cultural perspective in terms of how
they occur, and how they are supported in context. Findings highlighted the importance of accounting
for social and cultural issues relating to the tool user, prior to the introduction of a CSCL system to
support learning at work, as these could impact on the usage and acceptability of such a tool
Knowledge Representation Concepts for Automated SLA Management
Outsourcing of complex IT infrastructure to IT service providers has
increased substantially during the past years. IT service providers must be
able to fulfil their service-quality commitments based upon predefined Service
Level Agreements (SLAs) with the service customer. They need to manage, execute
and maintain thousands of SLAs for different customers and different types of
services, which needs new levels of flexibility and automation not available
with the current technology. The complexity of contractual logic in SLAs
requires new forms of knowledge representation to automatically draw inferences
and execute contractual agreements. A logic-based approach provides several
advantages including automated rule chaining allowing for compact knowledge
representation as well as flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing business
requirements. We suggest adequate logical formalisms for representation and
enforcement of SLA rules and describe a proof-of-concept implementation. The
article describes selected formalisms of the ContractLog KR and their adequacy
for automated SLA management and presents results of experiments to demonstrate

A component-based product line architecture for workflow management systems
This paper presents a component-based product line for workflow management systems. The process followed to design the product line was based on the Catalysis method. Extensions were made to represent variability across the process. The domain of workflow management systems has been shown to be appropriate to the application of the product line approach as there are a standard architecture and models established by a regulatory board, the Workflow Management Coalition. In addition, there is a demand for similar workflow management systems but with some different features. The product line architecture was evaluated with Rapide simulation tools. The evaluation was based on selected scenarios, thus, avoiding implementation issues. The strategy that has been used to populate the architecture and experiment with the product line is shown. In particular, the design of the workflow execution manager component is described
Design and implementation of a federated health record server
This paper describes the practical implementation of a federated health record serverbased on a generic and comprehensive public domain architecture and deployed in alive clinical setting.The authors, working at the Centre for Health Informatics and MultiprofessionalEducation (University College London), have built up over a decade of experiencewithin Europe on the requirements and information models that are needed to underpincomprehensive multi-professional electronic health records. This work has involvedcollaboration with a wide range of healthcare and informatics organisations and partnersin the healthcare computing industry across Europe though the EU Health Telematicsprojects GEHR, Synapses, EHCR-SupA, SynEx and Medicate. The resultingarchitecture models have influenced recent European standards in this area, such asCEN TC/251 ENV 13606. UCL has now designed and built a federated health recordserver based on these models which is now running in the Department ofCardiovascular Medicine at the Whittington Hospital in north London. A new EC FifthFramework project, 6WINIT, is enabling new and innovative IPv6 and wirelesstechnology solutions to be added to this work.The north London clinical demonstrator site has provided the solid basis from which toestablish "proof of concept" verification of the design approach, and a valuableopportunity to install, test and evaluate the results of the component engineeringundertaken during the EC funded projects

This project aims to provide a framework for the formal specification of JavaBeans and Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB), Sun Microsystems' component technology. We develop a list of properties that distinguishes beans from a Java class. For example, we formalise the notion of session beans, home/remote interfaces, etc. We also briefly touch upon the use of JavaBeans/EJB technology in a particular application
An Entailment Relation for Reasoning on the Web
Reasoning on the Web is receiving an increasing attention because of emerging fields such as Web adaption and Semantic Web. Indeed, the advanced functionalities striven for in these fields call for reasoning capabilities. Reasoning on the Web, however, is usually done using existing techniques rarely fitting the Web. As a consequence, additional data processing like data conversion from Web formats (e.g. XML or HTML) into some other formats (e.g. classical logic terms and formulas) is often needed and aspects of the Web (e.g. its inherent inconsistency) are neglected. This article first gives requirements for an entailment tuned to reasoning on the Web. Then, it describes how classical logic’s entailment can be modified so as to enforce these requirements. Finally, it discusses how the proposed entailment can be used in applying logic programming to reasoning on the Web
Just below the surface: developing knowledge management systems using the paradigm of the noetic prism
In this paper we examine how the principles embodied in the paradigm of the noetic prism can illuminate the construction of knowledge management systems. We draw on the formalism of the prism to examine three successful tools: frames, spreadsheets and databases, and show how their power and also their shortcomings arise from their domain representation, and how any organisational system based on integration of these tools and conversion between them is inevitably lossy. We suggest how a late-binding, hybrid knowledge based management system (KBMS) could be designed that draws on the lessons learnt from these tools, by maintaining noetica at an atomic level and storing the combinatory processes necessary to create higher level structure as the need arises. We outline the “just-below-the-surface” systems design, and describe its implementation in an enterprise-wide knowledge-based system that has all of the conventional office automation features
