On Properties of Policy-Based Specifications
The advent of large-scale, complex computing systems has dramatically
increased the difficulties of securing accesses to systems' resources. To
ensure confidentiality and integrity, the exploitation of access control
mechanisms has thus become a crucial issue in the design of modern computing
systems. Among the different access control approaches proposed in the last
decades, the policy-based one permits to capture, by resorting to the concept
of attribute, all systems' security-relevant information and to be, at the same
time, sufficiently flexible and expressive to represent the other approaches.
In this paper, we move a step further to understand the effectiveness of
policy-based specifications by studying how they permit to enforce traditional
security properties. To support system designers in developing and maintaining
policy-based specifications, we formalise also some relevant properties
regarding the structure of policies. By means of a case study from the banking
domain, we present real instances of such properties and outline an approach

An automated model-based test oracle for access control systems
In the context of XACML-based access control systems, an intensive testing
activity is among the most adopted means to assure that sensible information or
resources are correctly accessed. Unfortunately, it requires a huge effort for
manual inspection of results: thus automated verdict derivation is a key aspect
for improving the cost-effectiveness of testing. To this purpose, we introduce
XACMET, a novel approach for automated model-based oracle definition. XACMET
defines a typed graph, called the XAC-Graph, that models the XACML policy
evaluation. The expected verdict of a specific request execution can thus be
automatically derived by executing the corresponding path in such graph. Our
validation of the XACMET prototype implementation confirms the effectiveness of

Automated Certification of Authorisation Policy Resistance
Attribute-based Access Control (ABAC) extends traditional Access Control by
considering an access request as a set of pairs attribute name-value, making it
particularly useful in the context of open and distributed systems, where
security relevant information can be collected from different sources. However,
ABAC enables attribute hiding attacks, allowing an attacker to gain some access
by withholding information. In this paper, we first introduce the notion of
policy resistance to attribute hiding attacks. We then propose the tool ATRAP
(Automatic Term Rewriting for Authorisation Policies), based on the recent
formal ABAC language PTaCL, which first automatically searches for resistance
counter-examples using Maude, and then automatically searches for an Isabelle
proof of resistance. We illustrate our approach with two simple examples of

Machine-Readable Privacy Certificates for Services
Privacy-aware processing of personal data on the web of services requires
managing a number of issues arising both from the technical and the legal
domain. Several approaches have been proposed to matching privacy requirements
(on the clients side) and privacy guarantees (on the service provider side).
Still, the assurance of effective data protection (when possible) relies on
substantial human effort and exposes organizations to significant
(non-)compliance risks. In this paper we put forward the idea that a privacy
certification scheme producing and managing machine-readable artifacts in the
form of privacy certificates can play an important role towards the solution of
this problem. Digital privacy certificates represent the reasons why a privacy
property holds for a service and describe the privacy measures supporting it.
Also, privacy certificates can be used to automatically select services whose
certificates match the client policies (privacy requirements).
Our proposal relies on an evolution of the conceptual model developed in the
Assert4Soa project and on a certificate format specifically tailored to
represent privacy properties. To validate our approach, we present a worked-out
instance showing how privacy property Retention-based unlinkability can be

Access Control Synthesis for Physical Spaces
Access-control requirements for physical spaces, like office buildings and
airports, are best formulated from a global viewpoint in terms of system-wide
requirements. For example, "there is an authorized path to exit the building
from every room." In contrast, individual access-control components, such as
doors and turnstiles, can only enforce local policies, specifying when the
component may open. In practice, the gap between the system-wide, global
requirements and the many local policies is bridged manually, which is tedious,
error-prone, and scales poorly.
We propose a framework to automatically synthesize local access control
policies from a set of global requirements for physical spaces. Our framework
consists of an expressive language to specify both global requirements and
physical spaces, and an algorithm for synthesizing local, attribute-based
policies from the global specification. We empirically demonstrate the
framework's effectiveness on three substantial case studies. The studies
demonstrate that access control synthesis is practical even for complex
physical spaces, such as airports, with many interrelated security
requirements

A Formal Approach to Specification, Analysis and Implementation of Policy-Based Systems
The design of modern computing systems largely exploits structured sets of declarative rules called policies. Their principled use permits controlling a wide variety of system aspects and achieving separation of concerns between the managing and functional parts of systems.
These so-called policy-based systems are utilised within different application domains, from network management and autonomic computing to access control and emergency handling. The various policy-based proposals from the literature lack however a comprehensive methodology supporting the whole life-cycle of system development: specification, analysis and implementation. In this thesis we propose formally-defined tool-assisted methodologies for supporting the development of policy-based access control and autonomic computing systems.
We first present FACPL, a formal language that defines a core, yet expressive syntax for the specification of attribute-based access control policies. On the base of its denotational semantics, we devise a constraint-based analysis approach that enables the automatic verification of different properties of interest on policies.
We then present PSCEL, a FACPL-based formal language for the specification of autonomic computing systems. FACPL policies are employed to enforce authorisation controls and context-dependent adaptation strategies. To statically point out the effects of policies on system behaviours, we rely again on a constraint-based analysis approach and reason on progress properties of PSCEL systems.
The implementation of the languages and their analyses provides us some practical software tools. The effectiveness of the proposed solutions is illustrated through real-world case studies from the e-Health and autonomic computing domains
Formal modelling of data integration systems security policies
Data Integration Systems (DIS) are concerned with integrating data from multiple data sources to resolve user queries. Typically, organisations providing data sources specify security policies that impose stringent requirements on the collection, processing, and disclosure of personal and sensitive data. If the security policies were not correctly enforced by the integration component of DIS, the data is exposed to data leakage threats, e.g. unauthorised disclosure or secondary use of the data. SecureDIS is a framework that helps system designers to mitigate data leakage threats during the early phases of DIS development. SecureDIS provides designers with a set of informal guidelines written in natural language to specify and enforce security policies that capture confidentiality, privacy, and trust properties. In this paper, we apply a formal approach to model a DIS with the SecureDIS security policies and verify the correctness and consistency of the model. The model can be used as a basis to perform security policies analysis or automatically generate a Java code to enforce those policies within DIS
