Recognizing Speech in a Novel Accent: The Motor Theory of Speech Perception Reframed
The motor theory of speech perception holds that we perceive the speech of
another in terms of a motor representation of that speech. However, when we
have learned to recognize a foreign accent, it seems plausible that recognition
of a word rarely involves reconstruction of the speech gestures of the speaker
rather than the listener. To better assess the motor theory and this
observation, we proceed in three stages. Part 1 places the motor theory of
speech perception in a larger framework based on our earlier models of the
adaptive formation of mirror neurons for grasping, and for viewing extensions
of that mirror system as part of a larger system for neuro-linguistic
processing, augmented by the present consideration of recognizing speech in a
novel accent. Part 2 then offers a novel computational model of how a listener
comes to understand the speech of someone speaking the listener's native
language with a foreign accent. The core tenet of the model is that the
listener uses hypotheses about the word the speaker is currently uttering to
update probabilities linking the sound produced by the speaker to phonemes in
the native language repertoire of the listener. This, on average, improves the
recognition of later words. This model is neutral regarding the nature of the
representations it uses (motor vs. auditory). It serve as a reference point for
the discussion in Part 3, which proposes a dual-stream neuro-linguistic
architecture to revisits claims for and against the motor theory of speech
perception and the relevance of mirror neurons, and extracts some implications
for the reframing of the motor theory
The Relationship Between Phonemic Category Boundary Changes and Perceptual Adjustments to Natural Accents
published Online First October 21, 2019People often experience difficulties when they first hear a novel accent. Prior research has shown that
relatively fast natural accent accommodation can occur. However, there has been little investigation of
the underlying perceptual mechanism that drives the learning. The current study examines whether
phonemic boundary changes play a central role in natural accent accommodation. Two well-established
boundary shifting phenomena were used here—recalibration and selective adaptation—to index the
flexibility of phonemic category boundaries. Natural accent accommodation was measured with a task in
which listeners heard accented words and nonwords before and after listening to English sentences
produced by one of two native Mandarin Chinese speakers with moderate accents. In two experiments,
participants completed recalibration, selective adaptation, and natural accent accommodation tasks
focusing on a consonant contrast that is difficult for native Chinese speakers to produce. We found that:
(a) On the accent accommodation task, participants showed an increased endorsement of accented/
mispronounced words after exposure to a speaker’s accented speech, indicating a potential relaxation of
criteria in the word recognition process; (b) There was no strong link between recalibrating phonemic
boundaries and natural accent accommodation; (c) There was no significant correlation between recalibration
and selective adaptation. These results suggest that recalibration of phonemic boundaries does not
play a central role in natural accent accommodation. Instead, there is some evidence suggesting that

Infants' Ability to Learn New Words Across Accent
The purpose of this study was to explore the phonetic flexibility of toddlers' early lexical representations. In this study (based on Schmale, et al., 2011), toddlers' ability to generalize newly learned words across speaker accent was measured using a split-screen preferential looking paradigm. Twenty-four toddlers (mean age = 29 months) were taught two new words by a Spanish-accented speaker and later tested by a native English speaker. One word had a phonological (vocalic) change across speaker accent (e.g., [fim]/[feem]), while the other word did not (e.g., [mef]/[mef]). Toddlers looked to the correct object significantly longer than chance only when the target label did not phonemically differ across accent. However, toddlers did not look longer to the non-phonemic target variant than the phonemic variant. High variability between subjects was noted and the potential need for additional exposure prior to testing infants on such a contrast is discussed
A Dynamic Approach to Rhythm in Language: Toward a Temporal Phonology
It is proposed that the theory of dynamical systems offers appropriate tools
to model many phonological aspects of both speech production and perception. A
dynamic account of speech rhythm is shown to be useful for description of both
Japanese mora timing and English timing in a phrase repetition task. This
orientation contrasts fundamentally with the more familiar symbolic approach to
phonology, in which time is modeled only with sequentially arrayed symbols. It
is proposed that an adaptive oscillator offers a useful model for perceptual
entrainment (or `locking in') to the temporal patterns of speech production.
This helps to explain why speech is often perceived to be more regular than
experimental measurements seem to justify. Because dynamic models deal with
real time, they also help us understand how languages can differ in their
temporal detail---contributing to foreign accents, for example. The fact that
languages differ greatly in their temporal detail suggests that these effects
are not mere motor universals, but that dynamical models are intrinsic

An exploration of the rhythm of Malay
In recent years there has been a surge of interest in speech rhythm. However we still lack a clear understanding of the nature of rhythm and rhythmic differences across languages. Various metrics have been proposed as means for measuring rhythm on the phonetic level and making typological comparisons between languages (Ramus et al, 1999; Grabe & Low, 2002; Dellwo, 2006) but the debate is ongoing on the extent to which these metrics capture the rhythmic basis of speech (Arvaniti, 2009; Fletcher, in press). Furthermore, cross linguistic studies of rhythm have covered a relatively small number of languages and research on previously unclassified languages is necessary to fully develop the typology of rhythm. This study examines the rhythmic features of Malay, for which, to date, relatively little work has been carried out on aspects rhythm and timing.
The material for the analysis comprised 10 sentences produced by 20 speakers of standard Malay (10 males and 10 females). The recordings were first analysed using rhythm metrics proposed by Ramus et. al (1999) and Grabe & Low (2002). These metrics (∆C, %V, rPVI, nPVI) are based on durational measurements of vocalic and consonantal intervals. The results indicated that Malay clustered with other so-called syllable-timed languages like French and Spanish on the basis of all metrics. However, underlying the overall findings for these metrics there was a large degree of variability in values across speakers and sentences, with some speakers having values in the range typical of stressed-timed languages like English.
Further analysis has been carried out in light of Fletcher’s (in press) argument that measurements based on duration do not wholly reflect speech rhythm as there are many other factors that can influence values of consonantal and vocalic intervals, and Arvaniti’s (2009) suggestion that other features of speech should also be considered in description of rhythm to discover what contributes to listeners’ perception of regularity. Spectrographic analysis of the Malay recordings brought to light two parameters that displayed consistency and regularity for all speakers and sentences: the duration of individual vowels and the duration of intervals between intensity minima.
This poster presents the results of these investigations and points to connections between the features which seem to be consistently regulated in the timing of Malay connected speech and aspects of Malay phonology. The results are discussed in light of current debate on the descriptions of rhythm

The role of vowel hyperarticulation in clear speech to foreigners and infants
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonResearch on clear speech has shown that the type of clear speech produced can vary depending on the speaker, the listener and the medium. Although prior research has suggested that clear speech is more intelligible than conversational speech for normal-hearing listeners in noisy environments, it is not known which acoustic features of clear speech are the most responsible for enhanced intelligibility and comprehension. This thesis focused on investigating the acoustic characteristics that are produced in clear speech to foreigners and infants. Its aim was to assess the utility of these features in enhancing speech intelligibility and comprehension. The results of Experiment 1 showed that native speakers produced exaggerated vowel space in natural interactions with foreign-accented listeners compared to native-accented listeners. Results of Experiment 2 indicated that native speakers exaggerated vowel space and pitch to infants compared to clear read speech. Experiments 3 and 4 focused on speech perception and used transcription and clarity rating tasks. Experiment 3 contained speech directed at foreigners and showed that speech to foreign-accented speakers was rated clearer than speech to native-accented speakers. Experiment 4 contained speech directed at infants and showed that native speakers rated infant-directed speech as clearer than clear read speech. In the fifth and final experiment, naturally elicited clear speech towards foreign-accented interlocutors was used in speech comprehension tasks for native and non-native listeners with varying proficiency of English. It was revealed that speech with expanded vowel space improved listeners’ comprehension of speech in quiet and noise conditions. Results are discussed in terms of the Lindblom’s (1990) theory of Hyper and Hypoarticulation, an influential framework of speech production and perception.Brunel University Isambard Research Scholarshi
