Finite Satisfiability for Guarded Fixpoint Logic
The finite satisfiability problem for guarded fixpoint logic is decidable and
complete for 2ExpTime (resp. ExpTime for formulas of bounded width)
Querying the Guarded Fragment
Evaluating a Boolean conjunctive query Q against a guarded first-order theory
F is equivalent to checking whether "F and not Q" is unsatisfiable. This
problem is relevant to the areas of database theory and description logic.
Since Q may not be guarded, well known results about the decidability,
complexity, and finite-model property of the guarded fragment do not obviously
carry over to conjunctive query answering over guarded theories, and had been
left open in general. By investigating finite guarded bisimilar covers of
hypergraphs and relational structures, and by substantially generalising
Rosati's finite chase, we prove for guarded theories F and (unions of)
conjunctive queries Q that (i) Q is true in each model of F iff Q is true in
each finite model of F and (ii) determining whether F implies Q is
2EXPTIME-complete. We further show the following results: (iii) the existence
of polynomial-size conformal covers of arbitrary hypergraphs; (iv) a new proof
of the finite model property of the clique-guarded fragment; (v) the small
model property of the guarded fragment with optimal bounds; (vi) a
polynomial-time solution to the canonisation problem modulo guarded
bisimulation, which yields (vii) a capturing result for guarded bisimulation
invariant PTIME.Comment: This is an improved and extended version of the paper of the same
title presented at LICS 201
Guarded negation
International audienceWe consider restrictions of first-order logic and of fixpoint logic in which all occurrences of negation are required to be guarded by an atomic predicate. In terms of expressive power, the logics in question, called GNFO and GNFP, extend the guarded fragment of first-order logic and the guarded least fixpoint logic, respectively. They also extend the recently introduced unary negation fragments of first-order logic and of least fixpoint logic. We show that the satisfiability problem for GNFO and for GNFP is 2ExpTime-complete, both on arbitrary structures and on finite structures. We also study the complexity of the associated model checking problems. Finally, we show that GNFO and GNFP are not only computationally well behaved, but also model theoretically: we show that GNFO and GNFP have the tree-like model property and that GNFO has the finite model property, and we characterize the expressive power of GNFO in terms of invariance for an appropriate notion of bisimulation. Our complexity upper bounds for GNFO and GNFP hold true even for their " clique-guarded " extensions CGNFO and CGNFP, in which clique guards are allowed in the place of guards
Permutation Games for the Weakly Aconjunctive -Calculus
We introduce a natural notion of limit-deterministic parity automata and
present a method that uses such automata to construct satisfiability games for
the weakly aconjunctive fragment of the -calculus. To this end we devise a
method that determinizes limit-deterministic parity automata of size with
priorities through limit-deterministic B\"uchi automata to deterministic
parity automata of size and with
priorities. The construction relies on limit-determinism to avoid the full
complexity of the Safra/Piterman-construction by using partial permutations of
states in place of Safra-Trees. By showing that limit-deterministic parity
automata can be used to recognize unsuccessful branches in pre-tableaux for the
weakly aconjunctive -calculus, we obtain satisfiability games of size
with priorities for weakly aconjunctive
input formulas of size and alternation-depth . A prototypical
implementation that employs a tableau-based global caching algorithm to solve
these games on-the-fly shows promising initial results
Exptime tableaux for the coalgebraic μ-calculus
The coalgebraic approach to modal logic provides a uniform framework that captures the semantics of a large class of structurally different modal logics, including e.g. graded and probabilistic modal logics and coalition logic. In this paper, we introduc
