    Computational Imaging for Shape Understanding

    Geometry is the essential property of real-world scenes. Understanding the shape of the object is critical to many computer vision applications. In this dissertation, we explore using computational imaging approaches to recover the geometry of real-world scenes. Computational imaging is an emerging technique that uses the co-designs of image hardware and computational software to expand the capacity of traditional cameras. To tackle face recognition in the uncontrolled environment, we study 2D color image and 3D shape to deal with body movement and self-occlusion. Especially, we use multiple RGB-D cameras to fuse the varying pose and register the front face in a unified coordinate system. The deep color feature and geodesic distance feature have been used to complete face recognition. To handle the underwater image application, we study the angular-spatial encoding and polarization state encoding of light rays using computational imaging devices. Specifically, we use the light field camera to tackle the challenging problem of underwater 3D reconstruction. We leverage the angular sampling of the light field for robust depth estimation. We also develop a fast ray marching algorithm to improve the efficiency of the algorithm. To deal with arbitrary reflectance, we investigate polarimetric imaging and develop polarimetric Helmholtz stereopsis that uses reciprocal polarimetric image pairs for high-fidelity 3D surface reconstruction. We formulate new reciprocity and diffuse/specular polarimetric constraints to recover surface depths and normals using an optimization framework. To recover the 3D shape in the unknown and uncontrolled natural illumination, we use two circularly polarized spotlights to boost the polarization cues corrupted by the environment lighting, as well as to provide photometric cues. To mitigate the effect of uncontrolled environment light in photometric constraints, we estimate a lighting proxy map and iteratively refine the normal and lighting estimation. Through expensive experiments on the simulated and real images, we demonstrate that our proposed computational imaging methods outperform traditional imaging approaches

    Exploiting Structural Regularities and Beyond: Vision-based Localization and Mapping in Man-Made Environments

    Image-based estimation of camera motion, known as visual odometry (VO), plays a very important role in many robotic applications such as control and navigation of unmanned mobile robots, especially when no external navigation reference signal is available. The core problem of VO is the estimation of the camera’s ego-motion (i.e. tracking) either between successive frames, namely relative pose estimation, or with respect to a global map, namely absolute pose estimation. This thesis aims to develop efficient, accurate and robust VO solutions by taking advantage of structural regularities in man-made environments, such as piece-wise planar structures, Manhattan World and more generally, contours and edges. Furthermore, to handle challenging scenarios that are beyond the limits of classical sensor based VO solutions, we investigate a recently emerging sensor — the event camera and study on event-based mapping — one of the key problems in the event-based VO/SLAM. The main achievements are summarized as follows. First, we revisit an old topic on relative pose estimation: accurately and robustly estimating the fundamental matrix given a collection of independently estimated homograhies. Three classical methods are reviewed and then we show a simple but nontrivial two-step normalization within the direct linear method that achieves similar performance to the less attractive and more computationally intensive hallucinated points based method. Second, an efficient 3D rotation estimation algorithm for depth cameras in piece-wise planar environments is presented. It shows that by using surface normal vectors as an input, planar modes in the corresponding density distribution function can be discovered and continuously tracked using efficient non-parametric estimation techniques. The relative rotation can be estimated by registering entire bundles of planar modes by using robust L1-norm minimization. Third, an efficient alternative to the iterative closest point algorithm for real-time tracking of modern depth cameras in ManhattanWorlds is developed. We exploit the common orthogonal structure of man-made environments in order to decouple the estimation of the rotation and the three degrees of freedom of the translation. The derived camera orientation is absolute and thus free of long-term drift, which in turn benefits the accuracy of the translation estimation as well. Fourth, we look into a more general structural regularity—edges. A real-time VO system that uses Canny edges is proposed for RGB-D cameras. Two novel alternatives to classical distance transforms are developed with great properties that significantly improve the classical Euclidean distance field based methods in terms of efficiency, accuracy and robustness. Finally, to deal with challenging scenarios that go beyond what standard RGB/RGB-D cameras can handle, we investigate the recently emerging event camera and focus on the problem of 3D reconstruction from data captured by a stereo event-camera rig moving in a static scene, such as in the context of stereo Simultaneous Localization and Mapping

    Accuracy analysis of 3D object reconstruction using RGB-D sensor

    In this paper, we propose a new method for 3D object reconstruction using RGB-D sensor. The RGB-D sensor provides RGB images as well as depth images. Since the depth and RGB color images are captured with one sensor of a RGB-D camera placed in different locations, the depth image should be related to the color image. After matching of the images (registration), point-to-point corresponding between two images is found, and they can be combined and represented in the 3D space. In order to obtain a dense 3D map of the 3D object, we design an algorithm for merging information from all used cameras. First, features extracted from color and depth images are used to localize them in a 3D scene. Next, Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm is used to align all frames. As a result, a new frame is added to the dense 3D model. However, the spatial distribution and resolution of depth data affect to the performance of 3D scene reconstruction system based on ICP. The presented computer simulation results show an improvement in accuracy of 3D object reconstruction using real data.This work was supported by the Russian Science Foundation, grant no. 17-76-20045

    Remote sensing image fusion on 3D scenarios: A review of applications for agriculture and forestry

    Three-dimensional (3D) image mapping of real-world scenarios has a great potential to provide the user with a more accurate scene understanding. This will enable, among others, unsupervised automatic sampling of meaningful material classes from the target area for adaptive semi-supervised deep learning techniques. This path is already being taken by the recent and fast-developing research in computational fields, however, some issues related to computationally expensive processes in the integration of multi-source sensing data remain. Recent studies focused on Earth observation and characterization are enhanced by the proliferation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and sensors able to capture massive datasets with a high spatial resolution. In this scope, many approaches have been presented for 3D modeling, remote sensing, image processing and mapping, and multi-source data fusion. This survey aims to present a summary of previous work according to the most relevant contributions for the reconstruction and analysis of 3D models of real scenarios using multispectral, thermal and hyperspectral imagery. Surveyed applications are focused on agriculture and forestry since these fields concentrate most applications and are widely studied. Many challenges are currently being overcome by recent methods based on the reconstruction of multi-sensorial 3D scenarios. In parallel, the processing of large image datasets has recently been accelerated by General-Purpose Graphics Processing Unit (GPGPU) approaches that are also summarized in this work.     Large-Scale Textured 3D Scene Reconstruction

    Die Erstellung dreidimensionaler Umgebungsmodelle ist eine fundamentale Aufgabe im Bereich des maschinellen Sehens. Rekonstruktionen sind für eine Reihe von Anwendungen von Nutzen, wie bei der Vermessung, dem Erhalt von Kulturgütern oder der Erstellung virtueller Welten in der Unterhaltungsindustrie. Im Bereich des automatischen Fahrens helfen sie bei der Bewältigung einer Vielzahl an Herausforderungen. Dazu gehören Lokalisierung, das Annotieren großer Datensätze oder die vollautomatische Erstellung von Simulationsszenarien. Die Herausforderung bei der 3D Rekonstruktion ist die gemeinsame Schätzung von Sensorposen und einem Umgebunsmodell. Redundante und potenziell fehlerbehaftete Messungen verschiedener Sensoren müssen in eine gemeinsame Repräsentation der Welt integriert werden, um ein metrisch und photometrisch korrektes Modell zu erhalten. Gleichzeitig muss die Methode effizient Ressourcen nutzen, um Laufzeiten zu erreichen, welche die praktische Nutzung ermöglichen. In dieser Arbeit stellen wir ein Verfahren zur Rekonstruktion vor, das fähig ist, photorealistische 3D Rekonstruktionen großer Areale zu erstellen, die sich über mehrere Kilometer erstrecken. Entfernungsmessungen aus Laserscannern und Stereokamerasystemen werden zusammen mit Hilfe eines volumetrischen Rekonstruktionsverfahrens fusioniert. Ringschlüsse werden erkannt und als zusätzliche Bedingungen eingebracht, um eine global konsistente Karte zu erhalten. Das resultierende Gitternetz wird aus Kamerabildern texturiert, wobei die einzelnen Beobachtungen mit ihrer Güte gewichtet werden. Für eine nahtlose Erscheinung werden die unbekannten Belichtungszeiten und Parameter des optischen Systems mitgeschätzt und die Bilder entsprechend korrigiert. Wir evaluieren unsere Methode auf synthetischen Daten, realen Sensordaten unseres Versuchsfahrzeugs und öffentlich verfügbaren Datensätzen. Wir zeigen qualitative Ergebnisse großer innerstädtischer Bereiche, sowie quantitative Auswertungen der Fahrzeugtrajektorie und der Rekonstruktionsqualität. Zuletzt präsentieren wir mehrere Anwendungen und zeigen somit den Nutzen unserer Methode für Anwendungen im Bereich des automatischen Fahrens
