Beyond the binding : exploring the future book

We have reached a special moment in the story of the book: today’s youngest generation will experience literature in a vastly different way than the generation preceding. What we call a book has always morphed over time, but digital capabilities and the ubiquity of mobile electronics are changing the landscape at an unprecedented pace. This workshop will be a forum for creative exploration and discussion of the future of the book, motivated by this particular historical moment and a desire to bring together researchers from diverse backgrounds who are working on book-related technologies. ReActive: Exploring Hybrid Interactive Materials in Craftsmanship

This paper presents ReActive, a design exploration aimed at embedding interactivity in traditional materials by artisanal processes. In the attempt to reconciling technology with human experience and tradition, we experimented with artisans to understand how craftsmanship can embrace technological innovations while at the same time maintaining its nature and value. We built samples of hybrid materials, where electronics and smart materials are embedded in traditional ones, in order to make them reactive and interactive. We discuss implications and new possibilities offered by these new hybrid materials both for artisans and users and new perspectives for interaction design

Analysis of selected aspects and visual elements of cookbooks from XIX and XX century printed in Warsaw, Poland.

Cookbooks are special types of books instructing the user how to prepare a specific dish. By constant changes of technology as well as human consciousness cookbooks are in unceasing development, trying to understand its user and respond to his needs. Visual language of cookbooks have been changing throughout centuries. Besides that, cookbooks provide information about history and cultural habits. These types of instructions are excellent mines of knowledge about society. Given that times have been changing in cultural, social and historical aspects, the recipes and their visual representations had been evolving with them. The main objective of this investigation is to analyze and trace those changes on examples of Polish culinary books from XIX and XX century printed in Warsaw, Poland. The research deals with analyzing visual elements of cookbooks such as binding, typography and composition as well as illustrative and photographic elements
