    Evolutionary Robotics: a new scientific tool for studying cognition

    We survey developments in Artificial Neural Networks, in Behaviour-based Robotics and Evolutionary Algorithms that set the stage for Evolutionary Robotics in the 1990s. We examine the motivations for using ER as a scientific tool for studying minimal models of cognition, with the advantage of being capable of generating integrated sensorimotor systems with minimal (or controllable) prejudices. These systems must act as a whole in close coupling with their environments which is an essential aspect of real cognition that is often either bypassed or modelled poorly in other disciplines. We demonstrate with three example studies: homeostasis under visual inversion; the origins of learning; and the ontogenetic acquisition of entrainment

    Neuromorphic Computing Systems for Tactile Sensing Perception

    Touch sensing plays an important role in humans daily life. Tasks like exploring, grasping and manipulating objects deeply rely on it. As such, Robots and hand prosthesis endowed with the sense of touch can better and more easily manipulate objects, and physically collaborate with other agents. Towards this goal, information about touched objects and surfaces has to be inferred from raw data coming from the sensors. The orientation of edges, which is employed as a pre-processing stage in both artificial vision and touch, is a key indication for object discrimination. Inspired on the encoding of edges in human first-order tactile afferents, we developed a biologically inspired, spiking models architecture that mimics human tactile perception with computational primitives that are implementable on low-power subthreshold neuromorphic hardware. The network architecture uses three layers of Leaky Integrate and Fire neurons to distinguish different edge orientations of a bar pressed on the artificial skin of the iCub robot. We demonstrated that the network architecture can learn the appropriate connectivity through unsupervised spike-based learning, and that the number and spatial distribution of sensitive areas within receptive fields are important in edge orientation discrimination. The unconstrained and random structure of the connectivity among layers can produce unbalanced activity in the output neurons, which are driven by a variable amount of synaptic inputs. We explored two different mechanisms of synaptic normalization (weights normalization and homeostasis), defining how this can be useful during the learning phase and inference phase. The network is successfully able to discriminate between 35 orientations of 36 (0 degree to 180 degree with 5 degree step increments) with homeostasis and weights normalization mechanism. Besides edge orientation discrimination, we modified the network architecture to be able to classify six different touch modalities (e.g. poke, press, grab, squeeze, push, and rolling a wheel). We demonstrated the ability of the network to learn appropriate connectivity patterns for the classification, achieving a total accuracy of 88.3 %. Furthermore, another application scenario on the tactile object shapes recognition has been considered because of its importance in robotic manipulation. We illustrated that the network architecture with 2 layers of spiking neurons was able to discriminate the tactile object shapes with accuracy 100 %, after integrating to it an array of 160 piezoresistive tactile sensors where the object shapes are applied

    Behavior control in the sensorimotor loop with short-term synaptic dynamics induced by self-regulating neurons

    The behavior and skills of living systems depend on the distributed control provided by specialized and highly recurrent neural networks. Learning and memory in these systems is mediated by a set of adaptation mechanisms, known collectively as neuronal plasticity. Translating principles of recurrent neural control and plasticity to artificial agents has seen major strides, but is usually hampered by the complex interactions between the agent's body and its environment. One of the important standing issues is for the agent to support multiple stable states of behavior, so that its behavioral repertoire matches the requirements imposed by these interactions. The agent also must have the capacity to switch between these states in time scales that are comparable to those by which sensory stimulation varies. Achieving this requires a mechanism of short-term memory that allows the neurocontroller to keep track of the recent history of its input, which finds its biological counterpart in short-term synaptic plasticity. This issue is approached here by deriving synaptic dynamics in recurrent neural networks. Neurons are introduced as self-regulating units with a rich repertoire of dynamics. They exhibit homeostatic properties for certain parameter domains, which result in a set of stable states and the required short-term memory. They can also operate as oscillators, which allow them to surpass the level of activity imposed by their homeostatic operation conditions. Neural systems endowed with the derived synaptic dynamics can be utilized for the neural behavior control of autonomous mobile agents. The resulting behavior depends also on the underlying network structure, which is either engineered or developed by evolutionary techniques. The effectiveness of these self-regulating units is demonstrated by controlling locomotion of a hexapod with 18 degrees of freedom, and obstacle-avoidance of a wheel-driven robot. © 2014 Toutounji and Pasemann

    An optimised deep spiking neural network architecture without gradients

    We present an end-to-end trainable modular event-driven neural architecture that uses local synaptic and threshold adaptation rules to perform transformations between arbitrary spatio-temporal spike patterns. The architecture represents a highly abstracted model of existing Spiking Neural Network (SNN) architectures. The proposed Optimized Deep Event-driven Spiking neural network Architecture (ODESA) can simultaneously learn hierarchical spatio-temporal features at multiple arbitrary time scales. ODESA performs online learning without the use of error back-propagation or the calculation of gradients. Through the use of simple local adaptive selection thresholds at each node, the network rapidly learns to appropriately allocate its neuronal resources at each layer for any given problem without using a real-valued error measure. These adaptive selection thresholds are the central feature of ODESA, ensuring network stability and remarkable robustness to noise as well as to the selection of initial system parameters. Network activations are inherently sparse due to a hard Winner-Take-All (WTA) constraint at each layer. We evaluate the architecture on existing spatio-temporal datasets, including the spike-encoded IRIS and TIDIGITS datasets, as well as a novel set of tasks based on International Morse Code that we created. These tests demonstrate the hierarchical spatio-temporal learning capabilities of ODESA. Through these tests, we demonstrate ODESA can optimally solve practical and highly challenging hierarchical spatio-temporal learning tasks with the minimum possible number of computing nodes.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure

    Chaotic exploration and learning of locomotion behaviours

    We present a general and fully dynamic neural system, which exploits intrinsic chaotic dynamics, for the real-time goal-directed exploration and learning of the possible locomotion patterns of an articulated robot of an arbitrary morphology in an unknown environment. The controller is modeled as a network of neural oscillators that are initially coupled only through physical embodiment, and goal-directed exploration of coordinated motor patterns is achieved by chaotic search using adaptive bifurcation. The phase space of the indirectly coupled neural-body-environment system contains multiple transient or permanent self-organized dynamics, each of which is a candidate for a locomotion behavior. The adaptive bifurcation enables the system orbit to wander through various phase-coordinated states, using its intrinsic chaotic dynamics as a driving force, and stabilizes on to one of the states matching the given goal criteria. In order to improve the sustainability of useful transient patterns, sensory homeostasis has been introduced, which results in an increased diversity of motor outputs, thus achieving multiscale exploration. A rhythmic pattern discovered by this process is memorized and sustained by changing the wiring between initially disconnected oscillators using an adaptive synchronization method. Our results show that the novel neurorobotic system is able to create and learn multiple locomotion behaviors for a wide range of body configurations and physical environments and can readapt in realtime after sustaining damage
