The rarity of a species is usually judged by the number of specimens in collections, both private and institutional, and the number of places where it has been found or seen. On this basis, Neurocordulia xanthosoma (Williamson) is rare. Its crepuscular habits, its brown coloration, and its habitat requirements, coupled with the habits of most collectors, have been its protection. Nevertheless, because of its apparent special requirements and man\u27s modification of, and encroachment on, its environment, it may soon be a species of the past
Modeling Topic and Role Information in Meetings using the Hierarchical Dirichlet Process
Abstract. In this paper, we address the modeling of topic and role information in multiparty meetings, via a nonparametric Bayesian model called the hierarchical Dirichlet process. This model provides a powerful solution to topic modeling and a flexible framework for the incorporation of other cues such as speaker role information. We present our modeling framework for topic and role on the AMI Meeting Corpus, and illustrate the effectiveness of the approach in the context of adapting a baseline language model in a large-vocabulary automatic speech recognition system for multiparty meetings. The adapted LM produces significant improvements in terms of both perplexity and word error rate.
A semantic feature for human motion retrieval
With the explosive growth of motion capture data, it becomes very imperative in animation production to have an efficient search engine to retrieve motions from large motion repository. However, because of the high dimension of data space and complexity of matching methods, most of the existing approaches cannot return the result in real time. This paper proposes a high level semantic feature in a low dimensional space to represent the essential characteristic of different motion classes. On the basis of the statistic training of Gauss Mixture Model, this feature can effectively achieve motion matching on both global clip level and local frame level. Experiment results show that our approach can retrieve similar motions with rankings from large motion database in real-time and also can make motion annotation automatically on the fly. First results from the CRESST-III low-mass dark matter program
The CRESST experiment is a direct dark matter search which aims to measure
interactions of potential dark matter particles in an earth-bound detector.
With the current stage, CRESST-III, we focus on a low energy threshold for
increased sensitivity towards light dark matter particles. In this manuscript
we describe the analysis of one detector operated in the first run of
CRESST-III (05/2016-02/2018) achieving a nuclear recoil threshold of 30.1eV.
This result was obtained with a 23.6g CaWO crystal operated as a cryogenic
scintillating calorimeter in the CRESST setup at the Laboratori Nazionali del
Gran Sasso (LNGS). Both the primary phonon/heat signal and the simultaneously
emitted scintillation light, which is absorbed in a separate
silicon-on-sapphire light absorber, are measured with highly sensitive
transition edge sensors operated at ~15mK. The unique combination of these
sensors with the light element oxygen present in our target yields sensitivity
to dark matter particle masses as low as 160MeV/c.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
A review of data visualization: opportunities in manufacturing sequence management.
Data visualization now benefits from developments in technologies that offer innovative ways of presenting complex data. Potentially these have widespread application in communicating the complex information domains typical of manufacturing sequence management environments for global enterprises. In this paper the authors review the visualization functionalities, techniques and applications reported in literature, map these to manufacturing sequence information presentation requirements and identify the opportunities available and likely development paths. Current leading-edge practice in dynamic updating and communication with suppliers is not being exploited in manufacturing sequence management; it could provide significant benefits to manufacturing business. In the context of global manufacturing operations and broad-based user communities with differing needs served by common data sets, tool functionality is generally ahead of user application
Can randomness alone tune the fractal dimension?
We present a generalized stochastic Cantor set by means of a simple {\it cut
and delete process} and discuss the self-similar properties of the arising
geometric structure. To increase the flexibility of the model, two free
parameters, and , are introduced which tune the relative strength of the
two processes and the degree of randomness respectively. In doing so, we have
identified a new set with a wide spectrum of subsets produced by tuning either
or . Measuring the size of the resulting set in terms of fractal
dimension, we show that the fractal dimension increases with increasing order
