Learning generative texture models with extended Fields-of-Experts
We evaluate the ability of the popular Field-of-Experts (FoE) to model structure in images. As a test case we focus on modeling synthetic and natural textures. We find that even for modeling single textures, the FoE provides insufficient flexibility to learn good generative models â it does not perform any better than the much simpler Gaussian FoE. We propose an extended version of the FoE (allowing for bimodal potentials) and demonstrate that this novel formulation, when trained with a better approximation of the likelihood gradient, gives rise to a more powerful generative model of specific visual structure that produces significantly better results for the texture task
Toward Realistic Intersecting D-Brane Models
We provide a pedagogical introduction to a recently studied class of
phenomenologically interesting string models, known as Intersecting D-Brane
Models. The gauge fields of the Standard-Model are localized on D-branes
wrapping certain compact cycles on an underlying geometry, whose intersections
can give rise to chiral fermions. We address the basic issues and also provide
an overview of the recent activity in this field. This article is intended to
serve non-experts with explanations of the fundamental aspects, and also to
provide some orientation for both experts and non-experts in this active field

Roadmap on structured light
Structured light refers to the generation and application of custom light fields. As the tools and technology to create and detect structured light have evolved, steadily the applications have begun to emerge. This roadmap touches on the key fields within structured light from the perspective of experts in those areas, providing insight into the current state and the challenges their respective fields face. Using CamiTK for rapid prototyping of interactive Computer Assisted Medical Intervention applications
Computer Assisted Medical Intervention (CAMI hereafter) is a complex
multi-disciplinary field. CAMI research requires the collaboration of experts
in several fields as diverse as medicine, computer science, mathematics,
instrumentation, signal processing, mechanics, modeling, automatics, optics,
etc
Using text analysis to quantify the similarity and evolution of scientific disciplines
We use an information-theoretic measure of linguistic similarity to
investigate the organization and evolution of scientific fields. An analysis of
almost 20M papers from the past three decades reveals that the linguistic
similarity is related but different from experts and citation-based
classifications, leading to an improved view on the organization of science. A
temporal analysis of the similarity of fields shows that some fields (e.g.,
computer science) are becoming increasingly central, but that on average the
similarity between pairs has not changed in the last decades. This suggests
that tendencies of convergence (e.g., multi-disciplinarity) and divergence
(e.g., specialization) of disciplines are in balance.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

Risk: a fiction
Uncertainty creates anxiety so attempts have been made to reduce it using mathematical techniques. In the electronics industry the very large quantities of devices processed have provided reliable statistics and the opportunity to employ statistical methods. However, in fields such as decision-making and risk assessment there are strong criticisms of the probability calculus that have been triggered by discrepancies between the analysis of experts and non-experts. A radically different alternative is to view risk assessment and decision-making as exercises in rhetoric centred on storytelling language games. And to see the risk assessors as part of a political network attempting to influence action
Workshop on Workload and Training, and Examination of their Interactions: Executive summary
The goal of the workshop was to bring together experts in the fields of workload and training and representatives from the Dept. of Defense and industrial organizations who are reponsible for specifying, building, and managing advanced, complex systems. The challenging environments and requirements imposed by military helicopter missions and space station operations were presented as the focus for the panel discussions. The workshop permitted a detailed examination of the theoretical foundations of the fields of training and workload, as well as their practical applications. Furthermore, it created a forum where government, industry, and academic experts were able to examine each other's concepts, values, and goals. The discussions pointed out the necessity for a more efficient and effective flow of information among the groups respresented. The executive summary describes the rationale of the meeting, summarizes the primary points of discussion, and lists the participants and some of their summary comments
