Privacy-Preserving Synthetic Smart Meters Data
Power consumption data is very useful as it allows to optimize power grids,
detect anomalies and prevent failures, on top of being useful for diverse
research purposes. However, the use of power consumption data raises
significant privacy concerns, as this data usually belongs to clients of a
power company. As a solution, we propose a method to generate synthetic power
consumption samples that faithfully imitate the originals, but are detached
from the clients and their identities. Our method is based on Generative
Adversarial Networks (GANs). Our contribution is twofold. First, we focus on
the quality of the generated data, which is not a trivial task as no standard
evaluation methods are available. Then, we study the privacy guarantees
provided to members of the training set of our neural network. As a minimum
requirement for privacy, we demand our neural network to be robust to
membership inference attacks, as these provide a gateway for further attacks in
addition to presenting a privacy threat on their own. We find that there is a
compromise to be made between the privacy and the performance provided by the
algorithm
Household classification using annual electricity consumption data
Introduction: The knowledge about household properties (such as number of inhabitants, living area, heating type, etc.) is highly desirable for utility companies to pave the way to targeted energy efficiency programs, products and services. Raising individual household data via surveys or purchasing it is expensive and time consuming, and often only a small fraction of customers participate.
Recently, data mining methods have been developed to automatically infer house-hold characteristics from smart meter consumption data. However, the slow smart metering rollout hampers practical implementation of these methods in many countries. In this work, we present a machine learning approach that reveals household properties from conventional annual electricity consumption data currently available at a large scale
Feature extraction and filtering for household classification based on smart electricity meter data
Knowing household properties, such as number of persons per apartment, age of housing, type of water heating, etc. enables energy consultants and utilities to develop targeted energy conservation services. Load profiles captured by smart power meters, canâbesides several other applicationsâbe used to reveal energy efficiency relevant household characteristics. The goal of this work is to develop methods of supervised machine learning that deduce properties of private dwellings using consumption time series recorded in 30-min intervals. The contribution of this paper to the state of the art is threefold: we quadruplicate the number of features that describe power consumption curves to preserve classification relevant structures, indicate dimensionality reduction techniques to reduce the large-scale input data to a set of few significant features and finally, we redefine classes for some properties. As a result, the classification accuracy is elevated up to 82 %, while the runtime complexity is significantly reduced. The classification quality that can be achieved by our eCLASS methodology renders personalized efficiency measures in large-scale practical settings possible
Smart-Meter-Datenanalyse fĂŒr automatisierte Energieberatungen ("Smart Grid Data Analytics") - Schlussbericht
Smart electricity meters allow for capturing consumption data of individual households at a high resolution in time (typically at 15-minute intervals). The key objective of this project is to develop further and evaluate feature extraction and machine learning techniques for automatic identification of household properties based on electricity load profiles and additional consumption-related infor- mation (weather, socio-demographic data, holidays, etc.). The gained information shall render highly targeted and scalable energy efficiency services possible.
The developed classification methods enable recognition of 38 household characteristics with accuracy of partially above 70%, based on smart meter load profiles and additional freely available data and under adherence to data privacy and security regulations. The characteristics describe inhabitantsâ life situation (e.g., families, retirees, children, social status), energy efficiency (e.g., heating type, age and size of house, appliances in the household) as well as attitudes (e.g., toward renewable energy sources, interest on green electricity or solar panels). The project results will help authorized energy service providers in realization of effective and scalable energy efficiency campaigns. At the same time, the results support a factbased discussion of advantages (e.g., enhancement of energy efficiency) and costs (e.g., privacy implications) of such approaches
