Exploiting flow dynamics for super-resolution in contrast-enhanced ultrasound
Ultrasound localization microscopy offers new radiation-free diagnostic tools
for vascular imaging deep within the tissue. Sequential localization of echoes
returned from inert microbubbles with low-concentration within the bloodstream
reveal the vasculature with capillary resolution. Despite its high spatial
resolution, low microbubble concentrations dictate the acquisition of tens of
thousands of images, over the course of several seconds to tens of seconds, to
produce a single super-resolved image. %since each echo is required to be well
separated from adjacent microbubbles. Such long acquisition times and stringent
constraints on microbubble concentration are undesirable in many clinical
scenarios. To address these restrictions, sparsity-based approaches have
recently been developed. These methods reduce the total acquisition time
dramatically, while maintaining good spatial resolution in settings with
considerable microbubble overlap. %Yet, non of the reported methods exploit the
fact that microbubbles actually flow within the bloodstream. % to improve
recovery. Here, we further improve sparsity-based super-resolution ultrasound
imaging by exploiting the inherent flow of microbubbles and utilize their
motion kinematics. While doing so, we also provide quantitative measurements of
microbubble velocities. Our method relies on simultaneous tracking and
super-localization of individual microbubbles in a frame-by-frame manner, and
as such, may be suitable for real-time implementation. We demonstrate the
effectiveness of the proposed approach on both simulations and {\it in-vivo}
contrast enhanced human prostate scans, acquired with a clinically approved

Compressive Diffusion Strategies Over Distributed Networks for Reduced Communication Load
We study the compressive diffusion strategies over distributed networks based
on the diffusion implementation and adaptive extraction of the information from
the compressed diffusion data. We demonstrate that one can achieve a comparable
performance with the full information exchange configurations, even if the
diffused information is compressed into a scalar or a single bit. To this end,
we provide a complete performance analysis for the compressive diffusion
strategies. We analyze the transient, steady-state and tracking performance of
the configurations in which the diffused data is compressed into a scalar or a
single-bit. We propose a new adaptive combination method improving the
convergence performance of the compressive diffusion strategies further. In the
new method, we introduce one more freedom-of-dimension in the combination
matrix and adapt it by using the conventional mixture approach in order to
enhance the convergence performance for any possible combination rule used for
the full diffusion configuration. We demonstrate that our theoretical analysis
closely follow the ensemble averaged results in our simulations. We provide
numerical examples showing the improved convergence performance with the new

Video Compressive Sensing for Dynamic MRI
We present a video compressive sensing framework, termed kt-CSLDS, to
accelerate the image acquisition process of dynamic magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI). We are inspired by a state-of-the-art model for video compressive
sensing that utilizes a linear dynamical system (LDS) to model the motion
manifold. Given compressive measurements, the state sequence of an LDS can be
first estimated using system identification techniques. We then reconstruct the
observation matrix using a joint structured sparsity assumption. In particular,
we minimize an objective function with a mixture of wavelet sparsity and joint
sparsity within the observation matrix. We derive an efficient convex
optimization algorithm through alternating direction method of multipliers
(ADMM), and provide a theoretical guarantee for global convergence. We
demonstrate the performance of our approach for video compressive sensing, in
terms of reconstruction accuracy. We also investigate the impact of various
sampling strategies. We apply this framework to accelerate the acquisition
process of dynamic MRI and show it achieves the best reconstruction accuracy
with the least computational time compared with existing algorithms in the

Partially Linear Estimation with Application to Sparse Signal Recovery From Measurement Pairs
We address the problem of estimating a random vector X from two sets of
measurements Y and Z, such that the estimator is linear in Y. We show that the
partially linear minimum mean squared error (PLMMSE) estimator does not require
knowing the joint distribution of X and Y in full, but rather only its
second-order moments. This renders it of potential interest in various
applications. We further show that the PLMMSE method is minimax-optimal among
all estimators that solely depend on the second-order statistics of X and Y. We
demonstrate our approach in the context of recovering a signal, which is sparse
in a unitary dictionary, from noisy observations of it and of a filtered
version of it. We show that in this setting PLMMSE estimation has a clear
computational advantage, while its performance is comparable to
state-of-the-art algorithms. We apply our approach both in static and dynamic
estimation applications. In the former category, we treat the problem of image
enhancement from blurred/noisy image pairs, where we show that PLMMSE
estimation performs only slightly worse than state-of-the art algorithms, while
running an order of magnitude faster. In the dynamic setting, we provide a
recursive implementation of the estimator and demonstrate its utility in the
context of tracking maneuvering targets from position and acceleration

Vision-Aided Navigation for GPS-Denied Environments Using Landmark Feature Identification
In recent years, unmanned autonomous vehicles have been used in diverse applications because of their multifaceted capabilities. In most cases, the navigation systems for these vehicles are dependent on Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. Many applications of interest, however, entail operations in environments in which GPS is intermittent or completely denied. These applications include operations in complex urban or indoor environments as well as missions in adversarial environments where GPS might be denied using jamming technology.
This thesis investigate the development of vision-aided navigation algorithms that utilize processed images from a monocular camera as an alternative to GPS. The vision-aided navigation approach explored in this thesis entails defining a set of inertial landmarks, the locations of which are known within the environment, and employing image processing algorithms to detect these landmarks in image frames collected from an onboard monocular camera. These vision-based landmark measurements effectively serve as surrogate GPS measurements that can be incorporated into a navigation filter. Several image processing algorithms were considered for landmark detection and this thesis focuses in particular on two approaches: the continuous adaptive mean shift (CAMSHIFT) algorithm and the adaptable compressive (ADCOM) tracking algorithm. These algorithms are discussed in detail and applied for the detection and tracking of landmarks in monocular camera images. Navigation filters are then designed that employ sensor fusion of accelerometer and rate gyro data from an inertial measurement unit (IMU) with vision-based measurements of the centroids of one or more landmarks in the scene. These filters are tested in simulated navigation scenarios subject to varying levels of sensor and measurement noise and varying number of landmarks. Finally, conclusions and recommendations are provided regarding the implementation of this vision-aided navigation approach for autonomous vehicle navigation systems
