Two-Layered Superposition of Broadcast/Multicast and Unicast Signals in Multiuser OFDMA Systems
We study optimal delivery strategies of one common and independent
messages from a source to multiple users in wireless environments. In
particular, two-layered superposition of broadcast/multicast and unicast
signals is considered in a downlink multiuser OFDMA system. In the literature
and industry, the two-layer superposition is often considered as a pragmatic
approach to make a compromise between the simple but suboptimal orthogonal
multiplexing (OM) and the optimal but complex fully-layered non-orthogonal
multiplexing. In this work, we show that only two-layers are necessary to
achieve the maximum sum-rate when the common message has higher priority than
the individual unicast messages, and OM cannot be sum-rate optimal in
general. We develop an algorithm that finds the optimal power allocation over
the two-layers and across the OFDMA radio resources in static channels and a
class of fading channels. Two main use-cases are considered: i) Multicast and
unicast multiplexing when users with uplink capabilities request both
common and independent messages, and ii) broadcast and unicast multiplexing
when the common message targets receive-only devices and users with uplink
capabilities additionally request independent messages. Finally, we develop a
transceiver design for broadcast/multicast and unicast superposition
transmission based on LTE-A-Pro physical layer and show with numerical
evaluations in mobile environments with multipath propagation that the capacity
improvements can be translated into significant practical performance gains
compared to the orthogonal schemes in the 3GPP specifications. We also analyze
the impact of real channel estimation and show that significant gains in terms
of spectral efficiency or coverage area are still available even with
estimation errors and imperfect interference cancellation for the two-layered
superposition system
Cognitive Orthogonal Precoder for Two-tiered Networks Deployment
In this work, the problem of cross-tier interference in a two-tiered
(macro-cell and cognitive small-cells) network, under the complete spectrum
sharing paradigm, is studied. A new orthogonal precoder transmit scheme for the
small base stations, called multi-user Vandermonde-subspace frequency division
multiplexing (MU-VFDM), is proposed. MU-VFDM allows several cognitive small
base stations to coexist with legacy macro-cell receivers, by nulling the
small- to macro-cell cross-tier interference, without any cooperation between
the two tiers. This cleverly designed cascaded precoder structure, not only
cancels the cross-tier interference, but avoids the co-tier interference for
the small-cell network. The achievable sum-rate of the small-cell network,
satisfying the interference cancelation requirements, is evaluated for perfect
and imperfect channel state information at the transmitter. Simulation results
for the cascaded MU-VFDM precoder show a comparable performance to that of
state-of-the-art dirty paper coding technique, for the case of a dense cellular
layout. Finally, a comparison between MU-VFDM and a standard complete spectrum
separation strategy is proposed. Promising gains in terms of achievable
sum-rate are shown for the two-tiered network w.r.t. the traditional bandwidth

THROUGHPUT OPTIMIZATION AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF THE DOWNLINK IN THE LTE SYSTEM
Nowadays, the usage of smart phones is very popular. More and more people access the Internet with their smart phones. This demands higher data rates from the mobile network operators. Every year the number of users and the amount of information is increasing dramatically. The wireless technology should ensure high data rates to be able to compete with the wire-based technology. The main advantage of the wireless system is the ability for user to be mobile. The 4G LTE system made it possible to gain very high peak data rates. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the improvement of the system performance for the downlink based on different antenna configurations and different scheduling algorithms. Moreover, the fairness between the users using different schedulers has been analyzed and evaluated. Furthermore, the energy efficiency of the scheduling algorithms in the downlink of LTE systems has been considered. Distributed Learning Policies for Power Allocation in Multiple Access Channels
We analyze the problem of distributed power allocation for orthogonal
multiple access channels by considering a continuous non-cooperative game whose
strategy space represents the users' distribution of transmission power over
the network's channels. When the channels are static, we find that this game
admits an exact potential function and this allows us to show that it has a
unique equilibrium almost surely. Furthermore, using the game's potential
property, we derive a modified version of the replicator dynamics of
evolutionary game theory which applies to this continuous game, and we show
that if the network's users employ a distributed learning scheme based on these
dynamics, then they converge to equilibrium exponentially quickly. On the other
hand, a major challenge occurs if the channels do not remain static but
fluctuate stochastically over time, following a stationary ergodic process. In
that case, the associated ergodic game still admits a unique equilibrium, but
the learning analysis becomes much more complicated because the replicator
dynamics are no longer deterministic. Nonetheless, by employing results from
the theory of stochastic approximation, we show that users still converge to
the game's unique equilibrium.
Our analysis hinges on a game-theoretical result which is of independent
interest: in finite player games which admit a (possibly nonlinear) convex
potential function, the replicator dynamics (suitably modified to account for
nonlinear payoffs) converge to an eps-neighborhood of an equilibrium at time of
