    Factors affecting the performance of a manufacturing supply chain, and the organization

    Abstract: Due to constant failure in delivering the products to customers on time the defence manufacturing organization introduced the supply chain phenomenon into its operations in an attempt to improve its performance (on-time delivery). This research aims to identify if supply chain performance is affected mainly by social or technical factors and also outline which of these factors have the highest effect on the performance of supply chain. The importance of this research is that it will determine if the performance of supply chain is affected by technical or social factors and also how the organization is affected by these factors. This research employed a case study and made use of both qualitative and quantitative data to allow for data triangulation in order to minimize biasness and increase the credibility of the results. The findings indicate that supply chain performance is affected by both social factors and technical factors, however the impact of these factors on both supply chain and the organization is different. In summary, this research will provide insight to the factors that affect the performance of supply chain and accordingly provide methods to minimize or eliminate these factors and therefore reducing their effect on supply chain and the organization

    This study is factors affecting effectiveness of green procurement in manufacturing industry in Kenya. The study had four objectives to achieve: To establish the effect of top management support on green procurement in manufacturing industry in Kenya. To find out the effect of ICT infrastructure on green procurement in manufacturing industry in Kenya. To assess the role of supplier selection on green procurement in manufacturing industry in Kenya. To establish how supply chain management practices affect green procurement in manufacturing industry in Kenya. The research design was a descriptive study. Data was collected using a questionnaire that was administered through drop and pick later method. Percentages and frequencies were used to analyze objective one and three whereas regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between business integration and supply chain performance. The findings were presented in tables. Based on the analysis of findings 85% indicated that top management support affects effectiveness of green procurement in manufacturing industry in Kenya in the organization thus limiting the organization to deliver its services to its people. The remaining 15% of the respondents said top management support does not affect. Analysis of findings indicates ICT infrastructure on effectiveness of green procurement in manufacturing industry in Kenya 69% of the respondents responded that ICT infrastructure affect effectiveness of green procurement in manufacturing industry in Kenya. While 31% of the respondents indicate ICT infrastructure does not affect. Analysis of finding 82% indicated that it affects effectiveness of green procurement in manufacturing industry in Kenya while the response of 18% indicated that Supplier selection is not a factor affecting effectiveness of green procurement in manufacturing industry in Kenya. In this concern the response of 87% whom were the majority response indicated that supply chain management practices affect effectiveness of green procurement in manufacturing industry in Kenya.     The key role of institution pressure on green supply chain practice and the firm's performance

    Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the influence of isomorphism institutional theory on green supply chain management (GSCM) and firm performance by using the structural equation model (SEM) to explain the driving factors of reducing the impact of environmental processes on the firm. Design/methodology/approach: Structural equation model (SEM) to explain the driving factors of reducing the impact of environmental processes on the firm. Findings: Isomorphism institutional factors showed a statistically significant positive effect on GSCM practices. Moreover, GSCM practices showed a statistically significant positive effect on firm performance. Under the literature review, customer pressure and top management support are primary factors to achieve GSCM practices and potential to establish firm performance. Research limitations/implications: First, the common hypothesizes do not provide insight into all the relationships that warrant additional inspection. Second, Thailand manufacturers have experiences pressures from foreign customers and competitors but they have opportunities to learn from them to better improvement GSCM practices. Practical implications: Results may highlight pressure for greening and which more efforts are needed for GSCM practices. GSCM practices generally require more effort due to need for collaborating with customer and competitor. Thailand manufacturers are increasingly confronted with isomorphism institutional pressure to implement GSCM practices. Social implications: It is useful the Thailand government promotes GSCM by creating an awareness of the benefits. GSCM can help to alleviate the question of the followers about implementing GSCM and decrease their risk association with the environmental adoption. Originality/value: Research creates clarity of the relationship between isomorphism institutional pressures, top management support, and performance in Thailand, which is a developing country with environmental investment concerns that affect profits from the operations of the firm.Peer Reviewe

    Customer Enquiry Management in a Global Competitive Context: A Comparative Multi-Case Study Analysis

    Business-to-Business (B2B) relationships, such as between a manufacturer and a customer, are increasingly important during the Customer Enquiry Management (CEM) process, particularly so for non-Make-To-Stock (non-MTS) companies operating in industrial markets. Few empirical studies have explored the CEM practices adopted by firms in practice. A study of the Italian capital goods sector by Zorzini et al. (2007) is a recent exception. Moreover, most studies have approached CEM from a cross-department integrated perspective but in the digital economy, and with globalization, outsourcing and extended supply chains, CEM needs to be approached from a broader supply chain-oriented perspective, incorporating B2B exchanges. This paper builds on the study by Zorzini et al. (2007) by conducting multi-case study research with seven UK-based companies in the capital goods sector, including three sales and support companies with offshore manufacturing. By adopting a cross-national research perspective, it assesses whether the proposed theory applies to other capital goods firms outside Italy. By also adopting a supply chain perspective of CEM it investigates current industry practice in B2B markets and explores whether cross-functional coordination and formalization issues can be extended into a global context. Evidence from the UK generally supports prior theory, confirming links between high levels of coordination, formalization of the CEM process and improved performance. Some refinements are proposed, for example, in order to make the theory suitable for a global context. The characteristics of a supply chain are important factors that affect CEM. This research has managerial implications for improving the CEM process in non-Make-To-Stock (non-MTS) capital goods companies from both an intra and an inter-organisational (B2B) perspective.     This research focuses on an Australian agribusiness supply chain, the Australian Beef Supply Chain. The definition of the Australian Beef Supply Chain is the chain or sequence of all activities from the breeding property to the domestic or overseas consumers. The beef sector in Australia is undergoing rapid change because of globalisation, a highly competitive beef market (local and export), quicker production cycle and delivery times and consequently reduced inventories, a general speed-up of the rate of change in the business environment, the trend toward more outsourcing of activities, and the rapid development of IT. In this business environment, advanced supply chain systems have the potential to provide significant contributions to Australian beef industry performance. A conceptual framework of the research project has been proposed. There are three elements of conceptual framework. Firstly, supply chain practice of Australian beef industry consists of five sub-elements such as strategic supplier partnerships, customer relationships, information sharing, information quality and a lean system. Moreover, there is an antecedent of cooperative behaviour such as trust and commitment influencing supply chain practice and supply chain performance indicators. Secondly, supply chain performance indicators include four sub-elements such as flexibility, efficiency, food quality and responsiveness. Finally, the competitive advantage framework of the Australian beef enterprises consists of price, quality, export sales growth and time to market. As a further step of the research after developing the conceptual framework, the research project focuses the analysis on how the antecedents of the sub-elements of supply chain practice affect supply chain performance in Australian beef enterprises, how trust and commitment in trading partners affect supply chain performance, how attributes such as flexibility, efficiency, food quality and responsiveness influence the sub-elements of competitive advantage. The research project leads on to further work on how Australian beef enterprises measure their supply chain performance and what the major difficulties are arising when implementing supply chain management in the Australian beef industry and what kind of changes can be made to beef supply chains to enhance their performance.Agribusiness,

    Possible kinds of values added by the purchasing department

    Value-based purchasing focuses the decisions of purchasing professionals on the creation of value, rather than on the traditional objectives of cost savings and efficiency. Most of the purchasing researchers see purchasing as a strategic contributor to the added value of the organizations. But only a few contributions discuss the possible kinds of values that the purchasing department could actually add to the organization. This paper tries to fill this gap and reviews the traditional and strategic concepts of values added by purchasing and the factors affecting value added. Furthermore the paper presents a conceptual model of factors affecting value added by the purchasing department. In order to discover the influence of these factors on the capacity of the purchasing department to add value to the organization, we conducted an empirical study. The preliminary findings of the empirical research are presented at the end of the paper
