Transitive factorizations of permutations and geometry
We give an account of our work on transitive factorizations of permutations.
The work has had impact upon other areas of mathematics such as the enumeration
of graph embeddings, random matrices, branched covers, and the moduli spaces of
curves. Aspects of these seemingly unrelated areas are seen to be related in a
unifying view from the perspective of algebraic combinatorics. At several
points this work has intertwined with Richard Stanley's in significant ways.Comment: 12 pages, dedicated to Richard Stanley on the occasion of his 70th

Stanley's character polynomials and coloured factorisations in the symmetric group
In Stanley [R.P. Stanley, Irreducible symmetric group characters of rectangular shape, Sém. Lothar. Combin. 50 (2003) B50d, 11 p.] the author introduces polynomials which help evaluate symmetric group characters and conjectures that the coefficients of the polynomials are positive. In [R.P. Stanley, A conjectured combinatorial interpretation of the normalised irreducible character values of the symmetric group, math.CO/0606467, 2006] the same author gives a conjectured combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the polynomials. Here, we prove the conjecture for the terms of highest degree
Higher melonic theories
We classify a large set of melonic theories with arbitrary -fold
interactions, demonstrating that the interaction vertices exhibit a range of
symmetries, always of the form for some , which may be .
The number of different theories proliferates quickly as increases above
and is related to the problem of counting one-factorizations of complete
graphs. The symmetries of the interaction vertex lead to an effective
interaction strength that enters into the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the
two-point function as well as the kernel used for constructing higher-point
functions.Comment: 43 pages, 12 figure
Non-Factorizable Branes on the Torus
This work discusses string compactifications on the torus with optional Z_4 x
Z_4 or Z_2 x Z_2 orbifold action from the perspective of matrix factorizations.
The method is brought to a level where model building on these backgrounds is
possible. Whereas branes discussed in the literature typically wrap
factorizable cycles, that is cycles which are products of 1-cycles, branes
studied here can be in generic homology classes, can have arbitrary position
and Wilson line, have full complex structure respectively Kahler moduli
dependence and can be subject to any consistent orientifold action. It is shown
how any desired D-brane can be constructed systematically. Three-point
correlators can be computed as is demonstrated at hand of an example. Their
normalization is not discussed.Comment: 41 pages, references added, typos corrected, modified introductio
Monotone Hurwitz numbers in genus zero
Hurwitz numbers count branched covers of the Riemann sphere with specified
ramification data, or equivalently, transitive permutation factorizations in
the symmetric group with specified cycle types. Monotone Hurwitz numbers count
a restricted subset of the branched covers counted by the Hurwitz numbers, and
have arisen in recent work on the the asymptotic expansion of the
Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber integral. In this paper we begin a detailed study
of monotone Hurwitz numbers. We prove two results that are reminiscent of those
for classical Hurwitz numbers. The first is the monotone join-cut equation, a
partial differential equation with initial conditions that characterizes the
generating function for monotone Hurwitz numbers in arbitrary genus. The second
is our main result, in which we give an explicit formula for monotone Hurwitz
numbers in genus zero.Comment: 22 pages, submitted to the Canadian Journal of Mathematic
