    Fault Diagnosis of Rotating Electrical Machines in Transient Regime Using a Single Stator Current's FFT

Nevertheless, the implementation of the wavelet transform (WT), especially on embedded or low-power devices, faces practical problems, such as the election of the mother wavelet, the tuning of its parameters, the coordination between the sampling frequency and the levels of the transform, and the construction of the bank of wavelet filters, with highly different bandwidths that constitute the core of the DWT. In this paper, a diagnostic system using the harmonic WT is proposed, which can alleviate these practical problems because it is built using a single fast Fourier transform of one phase's current. The harmonic wavelet was conceived to perform musical analysis, hence its name, and it has spread into many fields, but, to the best of the authors' knowledge, it has not been applied before to perform fault diagnosis of rotating electrical machines in transient regime using the stator current.     Short-Frequency Fourier Transform for Fault Diagnosis of Induction Machines Working in Transient Regime

    [EN] Transient-based methods for fault diagnosis of induction machines (IMs) are attracting a rising interest, due to their reliability and ability to adapt to a wide range of IM's working conditions. These methods compute the time-frequency (TF) distribution of the stator current, where the patterns of the related fault components can be detected. A significant amount of recent proposals in this field have focused on improving the resolution of the TF distributions, allowing a better discrimination and identification of fault harmonic components. Nevertheless, as the resolution improves, computational requirements (power computing and memory) greatly increase, restricting its implementation in low-cost devices for performing on-line fault diagnosis. To address these drawbacks, in this paper, the use of the short-frequency Fourier transform (SFFT) for fault diagnosis of induction machines working under transient regimes is proposed. The SFFT not only keeps the resolution of traditional techniques, such as the short-time Fourier transform, but also achieves a drastic reduction of computing time and memory resources, making this proposal suitable for on-line fault diagnosis.     Acoustic Condition Monitoring & Fault Diagnostics for Industrial Systems

    Condition monitoring and fault diagnostics for industrial systems is required for cost reduction, maintenance scheduling, and reducing system failures. Catastrophic failure usually causes significant damage and may cause injury or fatality, making early and accurate fault diagnostics of paramount importance. Existing diagnostics can be improved by augmenting or replacing with acoustic measurements, which have proven advantages over more traditional vibration measurements including, earlier detection of emerging faults, increased diagnostic accuracy, remote sensors and easier setup and operation. However, industry adoption of acoustics remains in relative infancy due to vested confidence and reliance on existing measurement and, perceived difficulties with noise contamination and diagnostic accuracy. Researched acoustic monitoring examples typically employ specialist surface-mount transducers, signal amplification, and complex feature extraction and machine learning algorithms, focusing on noise rejection and fault classification. Usually, techniques are fine-tuned to maximise diagnostic performance for the given problem. The majority investigate mechanical fault modes, particularly Roller Element Bearings (REBs), owing to the mechanical impacts producing detectable acoustic waves. The first contribution of this project is a suitability study into the use of low-cost consumer-grade acoustic sensors for fault diagnostics of six different REB health conditions, comparing against vibration measurements. Experimental results demonstrate superior acoustic performance throughout but particularly at lower rotational speed and axial load. Additionally, inaccuracies caused by dynamic operational parameters (speed in this case), are minimised by novel multi-Support Vector Machine training. The project then expands on existing work to encompass diagnostics for a previously unreported electrical fault mode present on a Brush-Less Direct Current motor drive system. Commonly studied electrical faults, such as a broken rotor bar or squirrel cage, result from mechanical component damage artificially seeded and not spontaneous. Here, electrical fault modes are differentiated as faults caused by issues with the power supply, control system or software (not requiring mechanical damage or triggering intervention). An example studied here is a transient current instability, generated by non-linear interaction of the motor electrical parameters, parasitic components and digital controller realisation. Experimental trials successfully demonstrate real-time feature extraction and further validate consumer-grade sensors for industrial system diagnostics. Moreover, this marks the first known diagnosis of an electrically-seeded fault mode as defined in this work. Finally, approaching an industry-ready diagnostic system, the newly released PYNQ-Z2 Field Programmable Gate Array is used to implement the first known instance of multiple feature extraction algorithms that operate concurrently in continuous real-time. A proposed deep-learning algorithm can analyse the features to determine the optimum feature extraction combination for ongoing continuous monitoring. The proposed black-box, all-in-one solution, is capable of accurate unsupervised diagnostics on almost any application, maintaining excellent diagnostic performance. This marks a major leap forward from fine-tuned feature extraction performed offline for artificially seeded mechanical defects to multiple real-time feature extraction demonstrated on a spontaneous electrical fault mode with a versatile and adaptable system that is low-cost, readily available, with simple setup and operation. The presented concept represents an industry-ready all-in-one acoustic diagnostic solution, that is hoped to increase adoption of acoustic methods, greatly improving diagnostics and minimising catastrophic failures

    Evaluation of saliency tracking as an alternative for health monitoring in PMSM-drives under nonstationary conditions

    This paper evaluates the capability of saliency tracking to assess the health condition of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives operating under nonstationary conditions. The evaluated scheme is based on saliency tracking methods, which are associated to the accurate sensorless control of AC drives without zero speed limitations. In this work two representative saliency tracking architectures are evaluated: High Frequency (HF) injection, and PWM transient excitation. Although a monitoring approach based on HF injection was previously reported, a comparative study to evaluate the most representative saliency tracking schemes to assess health condition in drives was still missing. The aim of this work is to fill out this gap by evaluating and comparing two saliency-based monitoring schemes (one based on HF-injection and the other based on PWM transient excitation) to evaluate their performance in the presence of inter-turn winding faults. Simulation and experimental results are presented which confirm that both schemes offer excellent detection capabilities and that are suitable for drives operating under nonstationary conditions including standstill operation. Significant differences are also found for instance, PWM transient excitation offers improved accuracy since the approach is not affected by the inverter nonlinearities and is suitable for full-speed range applications. The main drawback here is complexity and the hardware requirements. Schemes based on HF-injection proved to be very simple and provide comparable results; however a good performance is only guaranteed for the zero-to-medium speed range applications which limit their applicability

    Prognostic Approaches Using Transient Monitoring Methods

    The utilization of steady state monitoring techniques has become an established means of providing diagnostic and prognostic information regarding both systems and equipment. However, steady state data is not the only, or in some cases, even the best source of information regarding the health and state of a system. Transient data has largely been overlooked as a source of system information due to the additional complexity in analyzing these types of signals. The development for algorithms and techniques to quickly, and intuitively develop generic quantification of deviations a transient signal towards the goal of prognostic predictions has until now, largely been overlooked. By quantifying and trending these shifts, an accurate measure of system heath can be established and utilized by prognostic algorithms. In fact, for some systems the elevated stress levels during transients can provide better, more clear indications of system health than those derived from steady state monitoring. This research is based on the hypothesis that equipment health signals for some failure modes are stronger during transient conditions than during steady-state because transient conditions (e.g. start-up) place greater stress on the equipment for these failure modes. From this it follows that these signals related to the system or equipment health would display more prominent indications of abnormality if one were to know the proper means to identify them. This project seeks to develop methods and conceptual models to monitor transient signals for equipment health. The purpose of this research is to assess if monitoring of transient signals could provide alternate or better indicators of incipient equipment failure prior to steady state signals. The project is focused on identifying methods, both traditional and novel, suitable to implement and test transient model monitoring in both an useful and intuitive way. By means of these techniques, it is shown that the addition information gathered during transient portions of life can be used to either to augment existing steady-state information, or in cases where such information is unavailable, be used as a primary means of developing prognostic models

    Detection of faults in a scaled down doubly-fed induction generator using advanced signal processing techniques.

    The study ventures into the development of a micro-based doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) test rig for fault studies. The 5kW wound rotor induction machine (WRIM) that was used in the test rig was based on a scaled-down version of a 2.5MW doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). The micromachine has been customized to make provision for implementing stator inter-turn short-circuit faults (ITSCF), rotor ITSCF and static eccentricity (SE) faults in the laboratory environment. The micromachine has been assessed under the healthy and faulty states, both before and after incorporating a converter into the rotor circuit of the machine. In each scenario, the fault signatures have been characterised by analyzing the stator current, rotor current, and the DFIG controller signals using the motor current signature analysis (MCSA) and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) analysis techniques to detect the dominant frequency components which are indicative of these faults. The purpose of the study is to evaluate and identify the most suitable combination of signals and techniques for the detection of each fault under steady-state and transient operating conditions. The analyses of the results presented in this study have indicated that characterizing the fault indicators independent of the converter system ensured clarity in the fault diagnosis process and enabled the development of a systematic fault diagnosis approach that can be applied to a controlled DFIG. It has been demonstrated that the occurrence of the ITSCFs and the SE fault in the micro-WRIM intensifies specific frequency components in the spectral plots of the stator current, rotor current, and the DFIG controller signals, which may then serve as the dominant fault indicators. These dominant components may be used as fault markers for classification and have been used for pattern recognition under the transient condition. In this case, the DWT and spectrogram plots effectively illustrated characteristic patterns of the dominant fault indicators, which were observed to evolve uniquely and more distinguishable in the rotor current signal compared to the stator current signal, before incorporating the converter in the rotor circuit. Therefore, by observing the trends portrayed in the decomposition bands and the spectrogram plots, it is deemed a reliable method of diagnosing and possibly quantifying the intensity of the faults in the machine. Once the power electronic converter was incorporated into the rotor circuit, the DFIG controller signals have been observed to be best suited for diagnosing faults in the micro-DFIG under the steady-state operating condition, as opposed to using the terminal stator or rotor current signals. The study also assessed the impact of undervoltage conditions at the point of common coupling (PCC) on the behaviour of the micro-DFIG. In this investigation, a significant rise in the faulted currents was observed for the undervoltage condition in comparison to the faulty cases under the rated grid voltage conditions. In this regard, it could be detrimental to the operation of the micro-DFIG, particularly the faulted phase windings, and the power electronic converter, should the currents exceed the rated values for extended periods

    Diagnosis and Fault detection in Electrical Machines and Drives based on Advanced Signal Processing Techniques

    In the present thesis, a new methodology of diagnosis based on advanced use of time-frequency technique analysis is presented. More precisely, a new fault index that allows tracking individual fault components in a single frequency band is defined. More in detail, a frequency sliding is applied to the signals being analyzed (currents, voltages, vibration signals), so that each single fault frequency component is shifted into a prefixed single frequency band. Then, the discrete Wavelet Transform is applied to the resulting signal to extract the fault signature in the frequency band that has been chosen. Once the state of the machine has been qualitatively diagnosed, a quantitative evaluation of the fault degree is necessary. For this purpose, a fault index based on the energy calculation of approximation and/or detail signals resulting from wavelet decomposition has been introduced to quantify the fault extend. The main advantages of the developed new method over existing Diagnosis techniques are the following: - Capability of monitoring the fault evolution continuously over time under any transient operating condition; - Speed/slip measurement or estimation is not required; - Higher accuracy in filtering frequency components around the fundamental in case of rotor faults; - Reduction in the likelihood of false indications by avoiding confusion with other fault harmonics (the contribution of the most relevant fault frequency components under speed-varying conditions are clamped in a single frequency band); - Low memory requirement due to low sampling frequency; - Reduction in the latency of time processing (no requirement of repeated sampling operation)

    Cost-Effective Reduced Envelope of the Stator Current via Synchronous Sampling for the Diagnosis of Rotor Asymmetries in Induction Machines Working at Very Low Slip

    [EN] Fault diagnosis of rotor asymmetries of induction machines (IMs) using the stator current relies on the detection of the characteristic signatures of the fault harmonics in the current spectrum. In some scenarios, such as large induction machines running at a very low slip, or unloaded machines tested offline, this technique may fail. In these scenarios, the fault harmonics are very close to the frequency of the fundamental component, and have a low amplitude, so that they may remain undetected, buried under the fundamental's leakage, until the damage is severe. To avoid false positives, a proven approach is to search for the fault harmonics in the current envelope, instead of the current itself, because in this case the spectrum is free from the leakage of the fundamental. Besides, the fault harmonics appear at a very low frequency. Nevertheless, building the current spectrum is costly in terms of computing complexity, as in the case of the Hilbert transform, or hardware resources, as in the need for simultaneously sampling three stator currents in the case of the extended current Park's vector approach (EPVA). In this work, a novel method is proposed to avoid this problem. It is based on sampling a phase current just twice per current cycle, with a fixed delay with respect to its zero crossings. It is shown that the spectrum of this reduced set of current samples contains the same fault harmonics as the spectrum of the full-length current envelope, despite using a minimal amount of computing resources. The proposed approach is cost-effective, because the computational requirements for building the current envelope are reduced to less than 1% of those required by other conventional methods, in terms of storage and computing time. In this way, it can be implemented with low-cost embedded devices for on-line fault diagnosis. The proposed approach is introduced theoretically and validated experimentally, using a commercial induction motor with a broken bar under different load and supply conditions.
