Automatic Music Composition using Answer Set Programming

Music composition used to be a pen and paper activity. These these days music is often composed with the aid of computer software, even to the point where the computer compose parts of the score autonomously. The composition of most styles of music is governed by rules. We show that by approaching the automation, analysis and verification of composition as a knowledge representation task and formalising these rules in a suitable logical language, powerful and expressive intelligent composition tools can be easily built. This application paper describes the use of answer set programming to construct an automated system, named ANTON, that can compose melodic, harmonic and rhythmic music, diagnose errors in human compositions and serve as a computer-aided composition tool. The combination of harmonic, rhythmic and melodic composition in a single framework makes ANTON unique in the growing area of algorithmic composition. With near real-time composition, ANTON reaches the point where it can not only be used as a component in an interactive composition tool but also has the potential for live performances and concerts or automatically generated background music in a variety of applications. With the use of a fully declarative language and an "off-the-shelf" reasoning engine, ANTON provides the human composer a tool which is significantly simpler, more compact and more versatile than other existing systems. T-LAIMA: Answer Set Programming for Modelling Agents with Trust

In a time where multi-agent systems (MAS) become increasingly more popular, they come in many forms and shapes depending on the requirements of the agents that need to populate them. Amongst the more demanding properties with respect to the design and implementation is how these agents may individually reason and communicate about their knowledge and beliefs, with a view to cooperation and collaboration. With information coming from various sources, it becomes vital for agents to have an idea how reliable these information providers are, especially if they start to contradict each other. In this paper we present a hybrid multi-agent platform, called T-LAIMA, using an extension of answer set programming (ASP). We show that our framework is capable of dealing with the specification and implementation of the system’s architecture, communication and the individual reasoning capacities of the agents. We discuss both the theoretical framework which models a single, fixed encounter between a number of agents and the implementation that sets ups these encounters in a open multi-agent domain

Finding similar or diverse solutions in answer set programming: theory and applications

    Get PDF
For many computational problems, the main concern is to find a best solution (e.g., a most preferred product configuration, a shortest plan, a most parsimonious phylogeny) with respect to some well-described criteria. On the other hand, in many real-world applications, computing a subset of good solutions that are similar/diverse may be desirable for better decision-making. For one reason, the given computational problem may have too many good solutions, and the user may want to examine only a few of them to pick one; in such cases, finding a few similar/diverse good solutions may be useful. Also, in many real-world applications the users usually take into account further criteria that are not included in the formulation of the optimization problem; in such cases, finding a few good solutions that are close to or distant from a particular set of solutions may be useful. With this motivation, we have studied various computational problems related to finding similar/diverse (resp. close/distant) solutions with respect to a given distance function, in the context of Answer Set Programming (ASP). We have introduced novel offline/online computational methods in ASP to solve such computational problems. We have modified an ASP solver according to one of our online methods, providing a useful tool (CLASP-NK) for various ASP applications. We have showed the applicability and effectiveness of our methods/tools in three domains: phylogeny reconstruction, AI planning, and biomedical query answering. Motivated by the promising results, we have developed computational tools to be used by the experts in these areas

Extending Answer Sets for Logic Programming Agents

Abstract. We present systems of logic programming agents (LPAS) to model the interactions between decision-makers while evolving to a conclusion. Such a system consists of a number of agents connected by means of unidirectional communication channels. Agents communicate with each other by passing answer sets obtained by updating the information received from connected agents with their own private information. We introduce a credulous answer set semantics for logic programming agents. As an application, we show how extensive games with perfect information can be conveniently represented as logic programming agent systems, where each agent embodies the reasoning of a game player, such that the equilibria of the game correspond with the semantics agreed upon by the agents in the LPAS
